We discuss effects of the brane-localized mass terms on the fixed points of the toroidal orbifold $T^2/Z_2$ under the presence of background magnetic fluxes, where multiple lowest and higher-level Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes are realized before introducing the localized masses in general. Through the knowledge of linear algebra, we find that, in each KK level, one of or more than one of the degenerate KK modes are almost inevitably perturbed, when single or multiple brane-localized mass terms are introduced. When the typical scale of the compactification is far above the electroweak scale or the TeV scale, we apply this mechanism for uplifting unwanted massless or light modes which are prone to appear in models on magnetized orbifolds.

We construct families of supersymmetric AdS$_3times Y_7$ and AdS$_3times Y_8$ solutions to type IIB string theory and M-theory, respectively. Here $Y_7$ is an $S^5$ fibration over $Sigma$, while $Y_8$ is an $S^4$ fibration over $Sigma_gtimes Sigma$, where $Sigma_g$ is a Riemann surface of genus $g>1$ and $Sigma$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. We interpret the solutions as near-horizon limits of $N$ D3-branes wrapped on $Sigma$ and $N$ M5-branes wrapped on $Sigma_gtimes Sigma$, respectively. These are holographically dual to $d=2$, $(0,2)$ SCFTs, and we show that the central charge and superconformal R-symmetry of the gravity solutions agree with dual field theory calculations.
We study the membrane wrapping mode corrections to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 6-brane in eleven dimensions. We examine the localized KK6-brane in the extended space in $E_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory. In order to discuss the physical origin of the localization in the extended space, we consider a probe M2-brane in eleven dimensions. We show that a three-dimensional $mathcal{N} = 4$ gauge theory is naturally interpreted as a membrane generalization of the two-dimensional $mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the fundamental string. We point out that the vector field in the $mathcal{N}= 4$ model is identified as a dual coordinate of the KK6-brane geometry. We find that the BPS vortex in the gauge theory gives rise to the violation of the isometry along the dual direction. We then show that the vortex corrections are regarded as an instanton effect in M-theory induced by the probe M2-brane wrapping around the M-circle.
Intersecting D-brane models and their T-dual magnetic compactifications provide an attractive framework for particle physics, allowing for chiral fermions and supersymmetry breaking. Generically, magnetic compactifications have tachyons that are usually removed by Wilson lines. However, quantum corrections prevent local minima for Wilson lines. We therefore study tachyon condensation in the simplest case, the magnetic compactification of type I string theory on a torus to eight dimensions. We find that tachyon condensation restores supersymmetry, which is broken by the magnetic flux, and we compute the mass spectrum of vector- and hypermultiplets. The gauge group $text{SO}(32)$ is broken to $text{USp}(16)$. We give arguments that the vacuum reached by tachyon condensation corresponds to the unique 8d superstring theory already known in the literature, with discrete $B_{ab}$ background or, in the T-dual version, the type IIB orientifold with three $text{O}7_-$-planes, one $text{O}7_+$-plane and eight D7-branes coincident with the $text{O}7_+$-plane. The ground state after tachyon condensation is supersymmetric and has no chiral fermions.
We present a general model with universal extra dimensions in the presence of the bulk fermion masses and boundary localized kinetic terms, which are generically allowed by symmetries of five dimensional gauge theory. We provide a comprehensive analysis for a general UED model, including Kaluza-Klein mass spectra, their interactions with the SM particles, and constraints from LHC, electroweak tests, and dark matter experiments. Finally we show current bounds on the size of allowed universal bulk mass and universal brane-localized terms.

We discuss the modular symmetry and zeros of zero-mode wave functions on two-dimensional torus $T^2$ and toroidal orbifolds $T^2/mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N=2,3,4,6$) with a background homogeneous magnetic field. As is well-known, magnetic flux contributes to the index in the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The zeros in magnetic compactifications therefore play an important role, as investigated in a series of recent papers. Focusing on the zeros and their positions, we study what type of boundary conditions must be satisfied by the zero modes after the modular transformation. The consideration in this paper justifies that the boundary conditions are common before and after the modular transformation.
