The advancement of smartphones with various type of sensors enabled us to harness diverse information with crowd sensing mobile application. However, traditional approaches have suffered drawbacks such as high battery consumption as a trade off to obtain high accuracy data using high sampling rate. To mitigate the battery consumption, we proposed low sampling point of interest (POI) extraction framework, which is built upon validation based stay points detection (VSPD) and sensor fusion based environment classification (SFEC). We studied various of clustering algorithm and showed that density based spatial clustering of application with noise(DBSCAN) algorithms produce most accurate result among existing methods. The SFEC model is utilized for classifying the indoor or outdoor environment of the POI clustered earlier by VSPD. Real world data are collected, bench-marked using existing clustering method to denote effectiveness of low sampling rate model in high noise spatial temporal data.
In this paper we present the first population-level, city-scale analysis of application usage on smartphones. Using deep packet inspection at the network operator level, we obtained a geo-tagged dataset with more than 6 million unique devices that launched more than 10,000 unique applications across the city of Shanghai over one week. We develop a technique that leverages transfer learning to predict which applications are most popular and estimate the whole usage distribution based on the Point of Interest (POI) information of that particular location. We demonstrate that our technique has an 83.0% hitrate in successfully identifying the top five popular applications, and a 0.15 RMSE when estimating usage with just 10% sampled sparse data. It outperforms by about 25.7% over the existing state-of-the-art approaches. Our findings pave the way for predicting which apps are relevant to a user given their current location, and which applications are popular where. The implications of our findings are broad: it enables a range of systems to benefit from such timely predictions, including operating systems, network operators, appstores, advertisers, and service providers.
Estimates of road grade/slope can add another dimension of information to existing 2D digital road maps. Integration of road grade information will widen the scope of digital maps applications, which is primarily used for navigation, by enabling driving safety and efficiency applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), eco-driving, etc. The huge scale and dynamic nature of road networks make sensing road grade a challenging task. Traditional methods oftentimes suffer from limited scalability and update frequency, as well as poor sensing accuracy. To overcome these problems, we propose a cost-effective and scalable road grade estimation framework using sensor data from smartphones. Based on our understanding of the error characteristics of smartphone sensors, we intelligently combine data from accelerometer, gyroscope and vehicle speed data from OBD-II/smartphones GPS to estimate road grade. To improve accuracy and robustness of the system, the estimations of road grade from multiple sources/vehicles are crowd-sourced to compensate for the effects of varying quality of sensor data from different sources. Extensive experimental evaluation on a test route of ~9km demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed method, achieving $5times$ improvement on road grade estimation accuracy over baselines, with 90% of errors below 0.3$^circ$.
In recent years, the amount of information collected about human beings has increased dramatically. This development has been partially driven by individuals posting and storing data about themselves and friends using online social networks or collecting their data for self-tracking purposes (quantified-self movement). Across the sciences, researchers conduct studies collecting data with an unprecedented resolution and scale. Using computational power combined with mathematical models, such rich datasets can be mined to infer underlying patterns, thereby providing insights into human nature. Much of the data collected is sensitive. It is private in the sense that most individuals would feel uncomfortable sharing their collected personal data publicly. For this reason, the need for solutions to ensure the privacy of the individuals generating data has grown alongside the data collection efforts. Out of all the massive data collection efforts, this paper focuses on efforts directly instrumenting human behavior, and notes that -- in many cases -- the privacy of participants is not sufficiently addressed. For example, study purposes are often not explicit, informed consent is ill-defined, and security and sharing protocols are only partially disclosed. This paper provides a survey of the work related to addressing privacy issues in research studies that collect detailed sensor data on human behavior. Reflections on the key problems and recommendations for future work are included. We hope the overview of the privacy-related practices in massive data collection studies can be used as a frame of reference for practitioners in the field. Although focused on data collection in an academic context, we believe that many of the challenges and solutions we identify are also relevant and useful for other domains where massive data collection takes place, including businesses and governments.
In this article, we put forward the mobile crowd sensing paradigm based on ubiquitous wearable devices carried by human users. The key challenge for mass user involvement into prospective urban crowd sending applications, such as monitoring of large-scale phenomena (e.g., traffic congestion and air pollution levels), is the appropriate sources of motivation. We thus advocate for the use of wireless power transfer provided in exchange for sensed data to incentivize the owners of wearables to participate in collaborative data collection. Based on this construction, we develop the novel concept of wirelessly powered crowd sensing and offer the corresponding network architecture considerations together with a systematic review of wireless charging techniques to implement it. Further, we contribute a detailed system-level feasibility study that reports on the achievable performance levels for the envisioned setup. Finally, the underlying energy-data trading mechanisms are discussed, and the work is concluded with outlining open research opportunities.
Economies are instances of complex socio-technical systems that are shaped by the interactions of large numbers of individuals. The individual behavior and decision-making of consumer agents is determined by complex psychological dynamics that include their own assessment of present and future economic conditions as well as those of others, potentially leading to feedback loops that affect the macroscopic state of the economic system. We propose that the large-scale interactions of a nations citizens with its online resources can reveal the complex dynamics of their collective psychology, including their assessment of future system states. Here we introduce a behavioral index of Chinese Consumer Confidence (C3I) that computationally relates large-scale online search behavior recorded by Google Trends data to the macroscopic variable of consumer confidence. Our results indicate that such computational indices may reveal the components and complex dynamics of consumer psychology as a collective socio-economic phenomenon, potentially leading to improved and more refined economic forecasting.
