We study the extensions of teleparallism in the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario by writing the analogous form to the torsion scalar $T_{text{NGR}}$ in terms of the corresponding antisymmetric tensors, given by $T_{text{NGR}} = a,T_{ijk} , T^{ijk} + b,T_{ijk} ,T^{kji} + c,T^{j}{}_{ji} , T^{k}{}_{k}{}^{i}$, in the four-dimensional New General Relativity (NGR) with arbitrary coefficients $a$, $b$ and $c$. After the KK dimensional reduction, the Lagrangian in the Einstein-frame can be realized by taking $2a+b+c=0$ with the ghost-free condition $cleq0$ for the one-parameter family of teleparallelism. We demonstrate that the pure conformal invariant gravity models can be constructed by the requirements of $2a+b=0$ and $c=0$. In particular, the torsion vector can be identified as the conformal gauge field, while the conformal gauge theory can be obtained by $2a+b+4c=0$ or $2a+b=0$, which is described on the Weyl-Cartan geometry $Y_4$ with the ghost-free conditions $2a+b+c>0$ and $c eq0$. We also consider the weak field approximation and discuss the non-minimal coupled term of the scalar current and torsion vector. For the conformal invariant models with $2a+b=0$, we find that only the anti-symmetric tensor field is allowed rather than the symmetric one.
We perform the 4-dimensional Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction of the 5-dimensional locally scale invariant Weyl-Dirac gravity. While compactification unavoidably introduces an explicit length scale into the theory, it does it in such a way that the KK radius can be integrated out from the low energy regime, leaving the KK vacuum to still enjoy local scale invariance at the classical level. Imitating a $U(1)timestilde{U}(1)$ gauge theory, the emerging 4D theory is characterized by a kinetic Maxwell-Weyl mixing whose diagonalization procedure is carried out in detail. In particular, we identify the unique linear combination which defines the 4D Weyl vector, and fully classify the 4D scalar sector. The later consists of (using Weyl language) a co-scalar and two in-scalars. The analysis is performed for a general KK $m$-ansatz, parametrized by the power $m$ of the scalar field which factorizes the 4D metric. The no-ghost requirement, for example, is met provided $-frac{1}{2}leq m leq 0$. An $m$-dependent dictionary is then established between the original 5D Brans-Dicke parameter $omega_5$ and the resulting 4D $omega_4$. The critical $omega_5=-frac{4}{3}$ is consistently mapped into critical $omega_4 = -frac{3}{2}$. The KK reduced Maxwell-Weyl kinetic mixing cannot be scaled away as it is mediated by a 4D in-scalar (residing within the 5D Weyl vector). The mixing is explicitly demonstrated within the Einstein frame for the special physically motivated choice of $m=-frac{1}{3}$. For instance, a super critical Brans-Dicke parameter induces a tiny positive contribution to the original (if introduced via the 5-dimensional scalar potential) cosmological constant. Finally, some no-scale quantum cosmological aspects are studied at the universal mini-superspace level.
We study teleparallel gravity in the emph{original} Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario. Our calculation of the KK reduction of teleparallel gravity indicates that the 5-dimensional torsion scalar $^{(5)}T$ generates the non-Brans-Dicke type effective Lagrangian in 4-dimension due to an additional coupling between the derivative of the scalar field and torsion, but the result is equivalent to that in general relativity. We also discuss the cosmological behavior in the FLRW universe based on the effective teleparallel gravity.
We study motions of photons in an unmagnetized cold homogeneous plasma medium in the five-dimensional charged static squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole spacetime. In this case, a photon behaves as a massive particle in a four-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime. We consider the light deflection by the squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole surrounded by the plasma in a weak-field limit. We derive corrections of the deflection angle to general relativity, which are related to the size of the extra dimension, the charge of the black hole and the ratio between the plasma and the photon frequencies.
We construct a Weyl transverse diffeomorphism invariant theory of symmetric teleparallel gravity by employing the Weyl compensator formalism. The low-energy dynamics has a single spin two gravition without a scalar degree of freedom. By construction, it is equivalent to the unimodular gravity (as well as the Einstein gravity) at the non-linear level.
We investigate the strong gravitational lensing in a Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizons. We find the size of the extra dimension imprints in the radius of the photon sphere, the deflection angle, the angular position and magnification of the relativistic images. Supposing that the gravitational field of the supermassive central object of the Galaxy can be described by this metric, we estimated the numerical values of the coefficients and observables for gravitational lensing in the strong field limit.
