In this article, we consider and analyse a small variant of a functional originally introduced in cite{BLS,LS} to approximate the (geometric) planar Steiner problem. This functional depends on a small parameter $varepsilon>0$ and resembles the (scalar) Ginzburg-Landau functional from phase transitions. In a first part, we prove existence and regularity of minimizers for this functional. Then we provide a detailed analysis of their behavior as $varepsilonto0$, showing in particular that sublevel sets Hausdorff converge to optimal Steiner sets. Applications to the average distance problem and optimal compliance are also discussed.

We consider a free boundary problem on three-dimensional cones depending on a parameter c and study when the free boundary is allowed to pass through the vertex of the cone. Combining analysis and computer-assisted proof, we show that when c is less than 0.43, the free boundary may pass through the vertex of the cone.
Given a global 1-homogeneous minimizer $U_0$ to the Alt-Caffarelli energy functional, with $sing(F(U_0)) = {0}$, we provide a foliation of the half-space $R^{n} times [0,+infty)$ with dilations of graphs of global minimizers $underline U leq U_0 leq bar U$ with analytic free boundaries at distance 1 from the origin.
The repulsion strength at the origin for repulsive/attractive potentials determines the regularity of local minimizers of the interaction energy. In this paper, we show that if this repulsion is like Newtonian or more singular than Newtonian (but still locally integrable), then the local minimizers must be locally bounded densities (and even continuous for more singular than Newtonian repulsion). We prove this (and some other regularity results) by first showing that the potential function associated to a local minimizer solves an obstacle problem and then by using classical regularity results for such problems.
We give an existence proof for variational solutions $u$ associated to the total variation flow. Here, the functions being considered are defined on a metric measure space $(mathcal{X}, d, mu)$ satisfying a doubling condition and supporting a Poincare inequality. For such parabolic minimizers that coincide with a time-independent Cauchy-Dirichlet datum $u_0$ on the parabolic boundary of a space-time-cylinder $Omega times (0, T)$ with $Omega subset mathcal{X}$ an open set and $T > 0$, we prove existence in the weak parabolic function space $L^1_w(0, T; mathrm{BV}(Omega))$. In this paper, we generalize results from a previous work by Bogelein, Duzaar and Marcellini by introducing a more abstract notion for $mathrm{BV}$-valued parabolic function spaces. We argue completely on a variational level.

This paper is concerned with the regularity theory of a transmission problem arising in composite materials. We give a new self-contained proof for the $C^{k,alpha}$ estimates on both sides of the interface under the minimal assumptions on the interface and data. Moreover, we prove the uniform Lipschitz estimate across a $C^{1,alpha}$ interface when the coefficients on both sides of the interface are periodic with independent structures and oscillating at different microscopic scales.
