Recently, the popularity of depth-sensors such as Kinect has made depth videos easily available while its advantages have not been fully exploited. This paper investigates, for gesture recognition, to explore the spatial and temporal information complementarily embedded in RGB and depth sequences. We propose a convolutional twostream consensus voting network (2SCVN) which explicitly models both the short-term and long-term structure of the RGB sequences. To alleviate distractions from background, a 3d depth-saliency ConvNet stream (3DDSN) is aggregated in parallel to identify subtle motion characteristics. These two components in an unified framework significantly improve the recognition accuracy. On the challenging Chalearn IsoGD benchmark, our proposed method outperforms the first place on the leader-board by a large margin (10.29%) while also achieving the best result on RGBD-HuDaAct dataset (96.74%). Both quantitative experiments and qualitative analysis shows the effectiveness of our proposed framework and codes will be released to facilitate future research.
Gesture recognition has attracted considerable attention owing to its great potential in applications. Although the great progress has been made recently in multi-modal learning methods, existing methods still lack effective integration to fully explore synergies among spatio-temporal modalities effectively for gesture recognition. The problems are partially due to the fact that the existing manually designed network architectures have low efficiency in the joint learning of multi-modalities. In this paper, we propose the first neural architecture search (NAS)-based method for RGB-D gesture recognition. The proposed method includes two key components: 1) enhanced temporal representation via the proposed 3D Central Difference Convolution (3D-CDC) family, which is able to capture rich temporal context via aggregating temporal difference information; and 2) optimized backbones for multi-sampling-rate branches and lateral connections among varied modalities. The resultant multi-modal multi-rate network provides a new perspective to understand the relationship between RGB and depth modalities and their temporal dynamics. Comprehensive experiments are performed on three benchmark datasets (IsoGD, NvGesture, and EgoGesture), demonstrating the state-of-the-art performance in both single- and multi-modality settings. The code is available at https://github.com/ZitongYu/3DCDC-NAS
Despite recent advances in MOOC, the current e-learning systems have advantages of alleviating barriers by time differences, and geographically spatial separation between teachers and students. However, there has been a lack of supervision problem that e-learners learning unit state(LUS) cant be supervised automatically. In this paper, we present a fusion framework considering three channel data sources: 1) videos/images from a camera, 2) eye movement information tracked by a low solution eye tracker and 3) mouse movement. Based on these data modalities, we propose a novel approach of multi-channel data fusion to explore the learning unit state recognition. We also propose a method to build a learning state recognition model to avoid manually labeling image data. The experiments were carried on our designed online learning prototype system, and we choose CART, Random Forest and GBDT regression model to predict e-learners learning state. The results show that multi-channel data fusion model have a better recognition performance in comparison with single channel model. In addition, a best recognition performance can be reached when image, eye movement and mouse movement features are fused.
Assessing advertisements, specifically on the basis of user preferences and ad quality, is crucial to the marketing industry. Although recent studies have attempted to use deep neural networks for this purpose, these studies have not utilized image-related auxiliary attributes, which include embedded text frequently found in ad images. We, therefore, investigated the influence of these attributes on ad image preferences. First, we analyzed large-scale real-world ad log data and, based on our findings, proposed a novel multi-step modality fusion network (M2FN) that determines advertising images likely to appeal to user preferences. Our method utilizes auxiliary attributes through multiple steps in the network, which include conditional batch normalization-based low-level fusion and attention-based high-level fusion. We verified M2FN on the AVA dataset, which is widely used for aesthetic image assessment, and then demonstrated that M2FN can achieve state-of-the-art performance in preference prediction using a real-world ad dataset with rich auxiliary attributes.
Minimally invasive surgery mainly consists of a series of sub-tasks, which can be decomposed into basic gestures or contexts. As a prerequisite of autonomic operation, surgical gesture recognition can assist motion planning and decision-making, and build up context-aware knowledge to improve the surgical robot control quality. In this work, we aim to develop an effective surgical gesture recognition approach with an explainable feature extraction process. A Bidirectional Multi-Layer independently RNN (BML-indRNN) model is proposed in this paper, while spatial feature extraction is implemented via fine-tuning of a Deep Convolutional Neural Network(DCNN) model constructed based on the VGG architecture. To eliminate the black-box effects of DCNN, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is employed. It can provide explainable results by showing the regions of the surgical images that have a strong relationship with the surgical gesture classification results. The proposed method was evaluated based on the suturing task with data obtained from the public available JIGSAWS database. Comparative studies were conducted to verify the proposed framework. Results indicated that the testing accuracy for the suturing task based on our proposed method is 87.13%, which outperforms most of the state-of-the-art algorithms.
In this paper, we propose an end-to-end speech recognition network based on Nvidias previous QuartzNet model. We try to promote the model performance, and design three components: (1) Multi-Resolution Convolution Module, replaces the original 1D time-channel separable convolution with multi-stream convolutions. Each stream has a unique dilated stride on convolutional operations. (2) Channel-Wise Attention Module, calculates the attention weight of each convolutional stream by spatial channel-wise pooling. (3) Multi-Layer Feature Fusion Module, reweights each convolutional block by global multi-layer feature maps. Our experiments demonstrate that Multi-QuartzNet model achieves CER 6.77% on AISHELL-1 data set, which outperforms original QuartzNet and is close to state-of-art result.
