We develop a manifest non-Hermitian approach of spectral and transport properties of two- dimensional mesoscopic systems in strong magnetic field. The finite system to which several ter- minals are attached constitutes an open system that can be described by an effective Hamiltonian. The life time of the quantum states expressed by the energy imaginary part depends specifically on the lead-system coupling and makes the difference among three regimes: resonant, integer quan- tum Hall effect and superradiant. The discussion is carried on in terms of edge state life time in different gaps, channel formation, role of hybridization, transmission coefficients quantization. A toy model helps in understanding non-Hermitian aspects in open systems.

Topological stability of the edge states is investigated for non-Hermitian systems. We examine two classes of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians supporting real bulk eigenenergies in weak non-Hermiticity: SU(1,1) and SO(3,2) Hamiltonians. As an SU(1,1) Hamiltonian, the tight-binding model on the honeycomb lattice with imaginary on-site potentials is examined. Edge states with ReE=0 and their topological stability are discussed by the winding number and the index theorem, based on the pseudo-anti-Hermiticity of the system. As a higher symmetric generalization of SU(1,1) Hamiltonians, we also consider SO(3,2) models. We investigate non-Hermitian generalization of the Luttinger Hamiltonian on the square lattice, and that of the Kane-Mele model on the honeycomb lattice, respectively. Using the generalized Kramers theorem for the time-reversal operator Theta with Theta^2=+1 [M. Sato et al., arXiv:1106.1806], we introduce a time-reversal invariant Chern number from which topological stability of gapless edge modes is argued.
We investigate the validity of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach in describing quantum transport in disordered tight-binding networks connected to external environments, acting as sinks. Usually, non-Hermitian terms are added, on a phenomenological basis, to such networks to summarize the effects of the coupling to the sinks. Here we consider a paradigmatic model of open quantum network for which we derive a non-Hermitian effective model, discussing its limit of validity by a comparison with the analysis of the full Hermitian model. Specifically, we consider a ring of sites connected to a central one-dimensional lead. The lead acts as a sink which absorbs the excitation initially present in the ring. The coupling strength to the lead controls the opening of the ring system. This model has been widely discussed in literature in the context of light-harvesting systems. We analyze the effectiveness of the non-Hermitian description both in absence and in presence of static disorder on the ring. In both cases, the non-Hermitian model is valid when the energy range determined by the eigenvalues of the ring Hamiltonian is smaller than the energy band in the lead. Under such condition, we show that results about the interplay of opening and disorder, previously obtained within the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach, remain valid when the full Hermitian model in presence of disorder is considered. The results of our analysis can be extended to generic networks with sinks, leading to the conclusion that the non-Hermitian approach is valid when the energy dependence of the coupling to the external environments is sufficiently smooth in the energy range spanned by the eigenstates of the network.
We have investigated low-temperature electronic transport on InAs/GaSb double quantum wells, a system which promises to be electrically tunable from a normal to a topological insulator. Hall bars of $50,mu$m in length down to a few $mu$m gradually develop a pronounced resistance plateau near charge-neutrality, which comes along with distinct non-local transport along the edges. Plateau resistances are found to be above or below the quantized value expected for helical edge channels. We discuss these results based on the interplay between imperfect edges and residual local bulk conductivity.

We theoretically investigate electrical transport in a quantum Hall system hosting bulk and edge current carrying states. Spatially varying magnetic and electric confinement creates pairs of current carrying lines that drift in the same or opposite directions depending on whether confinement is applied by a magnetic split gate or a magnetic strip gate. We study the electronic structure through calculations of the local density of states and conductivity of the channel as a function of the chirality and wave-function overlap of these states. We demonstrate a shift of the conductivity peaks to high or low magnetic field depending on chirality of pairs of edge states and the effect of chirality on backscattering amplitude associated with collisional processes.

Eigenenergies of a non-Hermitian system without parity-time symmetry are complex in general. Here, we show that the chiral boundary states of non-Hermitian topological insulators without parity-time symmetry can be Hermitian with real eigenenergies under certain conditions. Our finding allows one to construct Hermitian chiral edge and hinge states from non-Hermitian two-dimensional Chern insulators and three-dimensional second-order topological insulators, respectively. Such Hermitian chiral boundary channels have perfect transmission coefficients (quantized values) and are robust against disorders. Furthermore, a non-Hermitian topological insulator can undergo the topological Anderson insulator transition from a topological trivial non-Hermitian metal or insulator to a topological Anderson insulator with quantized transmission coefficients at finite disorders.
