This is a chapter for an upcoming book, Space, Time, and the Limits of Human Understanding, edited by Shyam Wuppuluri and Giancarlo Ghirardi. I first present the classical picture of flat space and ever-flowing time, as generally accepted until about 1900, discuss the challenges posed by modern physics and the adjustments required by special relativity, general relativity and quantum mechanics, and finally consider (and reject) a recent hypothesis that space-time is essentially discrete. Ultimately, none of the simple answers to what is space-time? stand up to reality. We have more work ahead of us!

The incompressibility constraint for fluid flow was imposed by Lagrange in the so-called Lagrangian variable description using his method of multipliers in the Lagrangian (variational) formulation. An alternative is the imposition of incompressibility in the Eulerian variable description by a generalization of Diracs constraint method using noncanonical Poisson brackets. Here it is shown how to impose the incompressibility constraint using Diracs method in terms of both the canonical Poisson brackets in the Lagrangian variable description and the noncanonical Poisson brackets in the Eulerian description, allowing for the advection of density. Both cases give dynamics of infinite-dimensional geodesic flow on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms and explicit expressions for this dynamics in terms of the constraints and original variables is given. Because Lagrangian and Eulerian conservation laws are not identical, comparison of the various methods is made.
We present the screenplay of a physics show on particle physics, by the Physikshow of Bonn University. The show is addressed at non-physicists aged 14+ and communicates basic concepts of elementary particle physics including the discovery of the Higgs boson in an entertaining fashion. It is also demonstrates a successful outreach activity heavily relying on the university physics students. This paper is addressed at anybody interested in particle physics and/or show physics. This paper is also addressed at fellow physicists working in outreach, maybe the experiments and our choice of simple explanations will be helpful. Furthermore, we are very interested in related activities elsewhere, in particular also demonstration experiments relevant to particle physics, as often little of this work is published. Our show involves 28 live demonstration experiments. These are presented in an extensive appendix, including photos and technical details. The show is set up as a quest, where 2 students from Bonn with the aid of a caretaker travel back in time to understand the fundamental nature of matter. They visit Rutherford and Geiger in Manchester around 1911, who recount their famous experiment on the nucleus and show how particle detectors work. They travel forward in time to meet Lawrence at Berkeley around 1950, teaching them about the how and why of accelerators. Next, they visit Wu at DESY, Hamburg, around 1980, who explains the strong force. They end up in the LHC tunnel at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland in 2012. Two experimentalists tell them about colliders and our heroes watch live as the Higgs boson is produced and decays. The show was presented in English at Oxford University and University College London, as well as Padua University and ICTP Trieste. It was 1st performed in German at the Deutsche Museum, Bonn (5/14). The show has eleven speaking parts and involves in total 20 people.
We propose a way to encode acceleration directly into quantum fields, establishing a new class of fields. Accelerated quantum fields, as we have named them, have some very interesting properties. The most important is that they provide a mathematically consistent way to quantize space-time in the same way that energy and momentum are quantized in standard quantum field theories.
The latest trend in the bottom-up perspective for arbitrary-shape scene text detection is to reason the links between text segments using Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). Notwithstanding, the performance of the best performing bottom-up method is still inferior to that of the best performing top-down method even with the help of GCN. We argue that this is not mainly caused by the limited feature capturing ability of the text proposal backbone or GCN, but by their failure to make a full use of visual-relational features for suppressing false detection, as well as the sub-optimal route-finding mechanism used for grouping text segments. In this paper, we revitalize the classic text detection frameworks by aggregating the visual-relational features of text with two effective false positive/negative suppression mechanisms. First, dense overlapping text segments depicting the `characterness and `streamline of text are generated for further relational reasoning and weakly supervised segment classification. Here, relational graph features are used for suppressing false positives/negatives. Then, to fuse the relational features with visual features, a Location-Aware Transfer (LAT) module is designed to transfer texts relational features into visual compatible features with a Fuse Decoding (FD) module to enhance the representation of text regions for the second step suppression. Finally, a novel multiple-text-map-aware contour-approximation strategy is developed, instead of the widely-used route-finding process. Experiments conducted on five benchmark datasets, i.e., CTW1500, Total-Text, ICDAR2015, MSRA-TD500, and MLT2017 demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art performance when being embedded in a classic text detection framework, which revitalises the superb strength of the bottom-up methods.
We study the relativistic quantum dynamics of a DKP oscillator field subject to a linear interaction in cosmic string space-time in order to better understand the effects of gravitational fields produced by topological defects on the scalar field. We obtain the solution of DKP oscillator in the cosmic string background. Also, we solve it with an ansatz in presence of linear interaction. We obtain the eigenfunctions and the energy levels of the relativistic field in that background.
