The full spin density fluctuations (SDF) spectra in 3d paramagnetic metals are analyzed from first principles using the linear response technique. Using the calculated complete wavevector and energy dependence of the dynamic spin susceptibility, we obtain the most important, but elusive, characteristic of SDF in solids: on-site spin correlator (SC). We demonstrate that the SDF have a mixed character consisting of interacting collective and single-particle excitations of similar strength spreading continuously over the entire Brillouin zone and a wide energy range up to femtosecond time scales. These excitations cannot be adiabatically separated and their intrinsically multiscale nature should be always taken into account for a proper description of metallic systems. Overall, in all studied systems, despite the lack of local moment, we found a very large SC resulting in an effective fluctuating moment of the order of several Bohr magnetons.

Spatial and time scales of spin density fluctuations (SDF) were analyzed in 3d ferromagnets using ab initio linear response calculations of complete wavevector and energy dependence of the dynamic spin susceptibility tensor. We demonstrate that SDF are spread continuously over the entire Brillouin zone and while majority of them reside within the 3d bandwidth, a significant amount comes from much higher energies. A validity of the adiabatic approximation in spin dynamics is discussed. The SDF spectrum is shown to have two main constituents: a minor low-energy spin wave contribution and a much larger high-energy component from more localized excitations. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), the on-site spin correlator (SC) and the related effective fluctuating moment were properly evaluated and their universal dependence on the 3d band population is further discussed.
The transition metal dipnictides TaAs2 , TaSb2 , NbAs2 and NbSb2 have recently sparked interest for exhibiting giant magnetoresistance. While the exact nature of magnetoresistance in these materials is still under active investigation, there are experimental results indicating anisotropic negative magnetoresistance. We study the effect of magnetic field on the band structure topology of these materials by applying a Zeeman splitting. In the absence of magnetic field, we find that the materials are weak topological insulators, which is in agreement with previous studies. When the magnetic field is applied, we find that type-II Weyl points form. This result is found first from a symmetry argument, and then numerically for a k.p model of TaAs2 and a tight-binding model of NbSb2. This effect can be of help in search for an explanation of the anomalous magnetoresistance in these materials.

We theoretically study the effect of exchange interaction on the non-equilibrium spin waves in disordered paramagnetic metals under the spin injection condition. We show that the gapless spectrum of spin waves, describing the spin precession in the absence of the applied magnetic field, changes sign to negative on the paramagnetic side near the ferromagnet - paramagnet phase transition. The damping of spin waves is small in the limit when electron-electron exchange energy is larger than the inverse electron mean free time, while in the opposite limit the propagation of spin waves is strongly suppressed. We discuss the amplification of the electromagnetic field by the non-equilibrium spin waves.

Multiband systems, which possess a wide parameter space, allow to explore a variety of competing ground states. Bright examples are the Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides, which demonstrate metallic, superconducting, and various magnetic phases. Here I discuss only one of the many interesting topics, namely, spin fluctuations in metallic multiband systems. I show how to calculate the effect of itinerant spin excitations on the electronic properties and formulate a theory of spin fluctuation-induced superconductivity. The superconducting state is unconventional and thus the system demonstrates unusual spin response with the spin resonance feature. I discuss its origin, consequences, and relation to experimental observations. Role of the spin-orbit coupling is specifically emphasized.

Synchrotron diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and small-angle neutron scattering experiments have revealed an anomalous response of MnGe. Similar but less pronounced behavior has also been observed in Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge and Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge solid solutions. Spin density fluctuations and Mn spin state instability are discussed as possible candidates for the observed effects.
