A holonomic system for the probability density function of the largest eigenvalue of a non-central complex Wishart distribution with identity covariance matrix is derived. Furthermore a new determinantal formula for the probability density function is derived (for m=2,3) or conjectured.
We study the distribution of the ratio of two central Wishart matrices with different covariance matrices. We first derive the density function of a particular matrix form of the ratio and show that its cumulative distribution function can be expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function 2F1 of a matrix argument. Then we apply the holonomic gradient method for numerical evaluation of the hypergeometric function. This approach enables us to compute the power function of Roys maximum root test for testing the equality of two covariance matrices.
We study the asymptotic distributions of the spiked eigenvalues and the largest nonspiked eigenvalue of the sample covariance matrix under a general covariance matrix model with divergent spiked eigenvalues, while the other eigenvalues are bounded but otherwise arbitrary. The limiting normal distribution for the spiked sample eigenvalues is established. It has distinct features that the asymptotic mean relies on not only the population spikes but also the nonspikes and that the asymptotic variance in general depends on the population eigenvectors. In addition, the limiting Tracy-Widom law for the largest nonspiked sample eigenvalue is obtained. Estimation of the number of spikes and the convergence of the leading eigenvectors are also considered. The results hold even when the number of the spikes diverges. As a key technical tool, we develop a Central Limit Theorem for a type of random quadratic forms where the random vectors and random matrices involved are dependent. This result can be of independent interest.
We show that the distribution of the scalar Schur complement in a noncentral Wishart matrix is a mixture of central chi-square distributions with different degrees of freedom. For the case of a rank-1 noncentrality matrix, the weights of the mixture representation arise from a noncentral beta mixture of Poisson distributions.
We derive some inequalities involving first four central moments of discrete and continuous distributions. Bounds for the eigenvalues and spread of a matrix are obtained when all its eigenvalues are real. Likewise, we discuss bounds for the roots and span of a polynomial equation.
Three types of integral representations for the cumulative distribution functions of convolutions of non-central p-variate gamma distributions are given by integration of elementary complex functions over the p-cube Cp = (-pi,pi]x...x(-pi,pi]. In particular, the joint distribution of the diagonal elements of a generalized quadratic form XAX with n independent normally distributed column vectors in X is obtained. For a single p-variate gamma distribution function (p-1)-variate integrals over Cp-1 are derived. The integrals are numerically more favourable than integrals obtained from the Fourier or laplace inversion formula.
