To establish the microscopic model of the compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$ is a challenging task. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments showed that the dispersion of this material is non-degenerate suggesting the existence of anisotropic interactions. Here we present a quantitative description of the excitation spectrum for BiCu$_2$PO$_6$ on the one-particle level. The solution of the isotropic frustrated spin ladder by continuous unitary transformations is the starting point of our approach. Further couplings such as isotropic interladder couplings and anisotropic interactions are included on the mean-field level. Our aim is to establish a minimal model built on the symmetry allowed interactions and to find a set of parameters, which allow us to describe the low-energy part of the dispersion without assuming unrealistic couplings.

Magnetic excitations of the recently discovered frustrated spin-1/2 two-leg ladder system Li$_2$Cu$_2$O(SO$_4$)$_2$ are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and infrared absorption measurements. Despite the presence of a magnetic dimerization concomitant with the tetragonal-to-triclinic structural distortion occurring below 125 K, neutron scattering experiments reveal the presence of dispersive triplet excitations above a spin gap of $Delta = 10.6$ meV at 1.5 K, a value consistent with the estimates extracted from magnetic susceptibility. The likely detection of these spin excitations in infrared spectroscopy is explained by invoking a dynamic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism in which light is coupled to the dimer singlet-to-triplet transition through an optical phonon. These results are qualitatively explained by exact diagonalization and higher-order perturbation calculations carried out on the basis of the dimerized spin Hamiltonian derived from first-principles.
Single crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and electron spin resonance experiments are used to study the magnetic structure and spin waves in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, a prototypical layered $S=1/2$ ferromagnet with frustrating next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The observed excitation spectrum is found to be inconsistent with a simple square lattice model previously proposed for this material. At least four distinct exchange coupling constants are required to reproduce the measured spin wave dispersion. The degree of magnetic frustration is correspondingly revised and found to be substantially smaller than in all previous estimates.
We present single-crystal growth and magnetic property studies of tellurium-bridged copper spin-1/2 system Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$. The spin-exchange interaction among copper spins via Cu-O-Te-O-Cu super-superexchange route leads to a novel two-leg spin ladder system. Spin susceptibility $chi$(T) data indicates that the triclinic Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a stepwise crossover for exchange couplings revealed by a broad maximum near T$_{max}$$sim$75~K and an anisotropic cusp in $frac{dchi}{dT}$(T) to signify a three dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic long-range ordering (LRO). The 3D LRO has been suggested from the anisotropic behavior of $chi$(T) with strong c-axis spin anisotropy and the signature of spin flop transition from the isothermal magnetization below $T_N$. Analysis of magnetic heat capacity (Cm) at $T_N$~15 K indicates that most of the spin entropy (~92% ) has already been released above $T_N$, which supports the picture of consecutive spin entropy reduction upon cooling with Te-bridged two-leg spin ladder system with strong intraladder and interladder couplings. Theoretical DFT+U calculations have been performed to search for the ground state magnetic configuration and also to evaluate exchange coupling constants that support the magnetic model deduced from the combined spin susceptibility and crystal structure symmetry analysis.
We report the signatures of dynamic spin fluctuations in the layered honeycomb Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ compound, with a 3$d$ S = 1/2 $d^9$ Cu$^{2+}$ configuration, through muon spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) and neutron scattering studies. Our zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$mu$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice.
The quantum phases in a spin-1 skewed ladder system formed by alternately fusing five- and seven-membered rings is studied numerically using exact diagonalization technique up to 16 spins and using density matrix renormalization group method for larger system sizes. The ladder has isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interaction ($J_2 = 1$) between the nearest neighbor spins along the legs, varying isotropic AF exchange interaction ($J_1$) along the rungs. As a function of $J_1$, the system shows many interesting ground states (gs) which vary from different types of nonmagnetic gs to different kinds of ferrimagnetic gs. Study of different gs properties such as spin gap, spin-spin correlations, spin density and bond order reveal that the system has four distinct phases namely, AF phase at small $J_1$, ferrimagnetic phase with gs spin $S_G = n$ for $1.44 < J_1 < 4.74$ and with $S_G = 2n$ for $J_1 > 5.63$, where $n$ is the number of unit cells, a reentrant nonmagnetic phase at $4.74 < J_1 < 5.44$. The system also shows the presence of spin current at specific $J_1$ values due to simultaneous breaking of both reflection and spin parity symmetries.
