The recently proposed theoretical concept of a Hunds metal is regarded as a key to explain the exotic magnetic and electronic behavior occuring in the strongly correlated electron systems of multiorbital metallic materials. However, a tuning of the abundance of parameters, that determine these systems, is experimentally challenging. Here, we investigate the smallest possible realization of a Hunds metal, a Hunds impurity, realized by a single magnetic impurity strongly hybridized to a metallic substrate. We experimentally control all relevant parameters including magnetic anisotropy and hybridization by hydrogenation with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and thereby tune it through a regime from emergent magnetic moments into a multi-orbital Kondo state. Our comparison of the measured temperature and magnetic field dependent spectral functions to advanced many-body theories will give relevant input for their application to non-Fermi liquid transport, complex magnetic order, or unconventional superconductivity.

Uranium compounds can manifest a wide range of fascinating many-body phenomena, and are often thought to be poised at a crossover between localized and itinerant regimes for 5f electrons. The antiferromagnetic dipnictide USb2 has been of recent interest due to the discovery of rich proximate phase diagrams and unusual quantum coherence phenomena. Here, linear-dichroic X-ray absorption and elastic neutron scattering are used to characterize electronic symmetries on uranium in USb2 and isostructural UBi2. Of these two materials, only USb2 is found to enable strong Hunds rule alignment of local magnetic degrees of freedom, and to undergo distinctive changes in local atomic multiplet symmetry across the magnetic phase transition. Theoretical analysis reveals that these and other anomalous properties of the material may be understood by attributing it as the first known high temperature realization of a singlet ground state magnet, in which magnetism occurs through a process that resembles exciton condensation.
We employ a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory to investigate the electronic structure of the recently synthesized insulator BaCrO$_3$. Our calculations show that Hunds coupling is responsible for strong correlation effects, which are however not sufficient to turn the system insulating. A finite Jahn-Teller distortion lifting the orbital degeneracy is necessary to stabilize an insulating state with orbital ordering and consequent magnetic ordering.
A superposition of spin helices can yield topological spin textures, such as skyrmion and hedgehog lattices. Based on the analogy with the moire in optics, we study the magnetic and topological properties of such superpositions in a comprehensive way by modulating the interference pattern continuously. We find that the control of the angles between the superposed helices and the net magnetization yields successive topological transitions associated with pair annihilation of hedgehogs and antihedgehogs. Accordingly, emergent electromagnetic fields, magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, and Dirac strings arising from the noncoplanar spin textures show systematic evolution. In addition, we also show how the system undergoes the magnetic transitions with dimensional reduction from the three-dimensional hedgehog lattice to a two-dimensional skyrmion lattice or a one-dimensional conical state. The results indicate that the concept of spin moir{e} provides an efficient way of engineering the emergent electromagnetism and topological nature in magnets.
To efficiently manipulate magnetism is a key physical issue for modern condensed matter physics, which is also crucial for magnetic functional applications. Most previous relevant studies rely on the tuning of spin texture, while the spin orientation is often negligible. As an exception, spin-orbit coupled $J_{rm eff}$ states of $4d$/$5d$ electrons provide an ideal platform for emergent quantum effects. However, many expectations have not been realized due to the complexities of real materials. Thus the pursuit for more ideal $J_{rm eff}$ states remains ongoing. Here a near-ideal $J_{rm eff}$=$3/2$ Mott insulating phase is predicted in the family of hexachloro niobates, which avoid some common drawbacks of perovskite oxides. The local magnetic moment is nearly compensated between spin and orbital components, rendering exotic recessive magnetism. More interestingly, the electronic structure and magnetism can be strongly tuned by rotating spin axis, which is rare but crucial for spintronic applications.
The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure is crucial since the interplay between magnetism and band topology can lead to various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals and Chern insulators etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that with Sb-doping, the newly-discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7 evolves from antiferro-magnetic to ferromagnetic and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which result in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from antiferromagnetic to ferro-magnetic. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from antiferromagnetic topological insulator (x = 0) to ferromagnetic axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.
