We investigate collective modes in three dimensional (3D) gapless multi-Weyl semimetals with anisotropic energy band dispersions (i.e., $Esim sqrt{ k_{parallel}^{2J} + k_z^2}$, where $k_{parallel}$ and $k_z$ are wave vectors and $J$ is a positive integer). For comparison, we also consider the gapless semimetals with the isotropic band dispersions (i.e., $Esim k^J$). We calculate analytically long-wavelength plasma frequencies incorporating interband transitions and chiral properties of carriers. For both the isotropic and anisotropic cases, we find that interband transitions and chirality lead to the depolarization shift of plasma frequencies. For the isotropic parabolic band dispersion (i.e., $N=2$, $Esim k^2$), the long-wavelength plasma frequencies lie outside the single particle excitation regions for all carrier densities, and thus the plasmons do not decay via Landau damping. For the higher-order band dispersions ($N ge 3$) the long-wavelength plasmons experience damping below a critical density. For systems with the anisotropic dispersion the density dependence of the long-wavelength plasma frequency along the direction of non-linear dispersion behaves like that of the isotropic linear band model ($N=1$), while along the direction of linear dispersion it behaves like that of the isotropic non-linear model ($N ge 2$). Plasmons along both directions remain undamped over a broad range of densities due to the chirality induced depolarization shift. Our results provide a comprehensive picture of how band dispersion and chirality affect plasmon behaviors in 3D gapless chiral systems with the arbitrary band dispersion.
Weyl semimetals are characterized by unconventional electromagnetic response. We present analytical expressions for all components of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent charge-spin linear-response tensor of Weyl fermions. The spin-momentum locking of the Weyl Hamiltonian leads to a coupling between charge and longitudinal spin fluctuations, while transverse spin fluctuations remain decoupled from the charge. A real Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes can show this charge-spin coupling in equilibrium if its crystal symmetry is sufficiently low. All Weyl semimetals are expected to show this coupling if they are driven into a non-equilibrium stationary state with different occupations of Weyl nodes, for example by exploiting the chiral anomaly. Based on the response tensor, we investigate the low-energy collective excitations of interacting Weyl fermions. For a local Hubbard interaction, the charge-spin coupling leads to a dramatic change of the zero-sound dispersion: its velocity becomes independent of the interaction strength and the chemical potential and is given solely by the Fermi velocity. In the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions, the coupling transforms the plasmon modes into spin plasmons. For real Weyl semimetals with multiple Weyl nodes, the collective modes are strongly affected by the presence of parallel static electric and magnetic fields, due to the chiral anomaly. In particular, the zero-sound frequency at fixed momentum and the spin content of the spin plasmons go through cusp singularities as the chemical potential of one of the Weyl cones is tuned through the Weyl node. We discuss possible experiments that could provide smoking-gun evidence for Weyl physics.
Multi-Weyl semimetals are new types of Weyl semimetals which have anisotropic non-linear energy dispersion and a topological charge larger than one, thus exhibiting a unique quantum response. Using a unified lattice model, we calculate the optical conductivity numerically in the multi-Weyl semimetal phase and in its neighboring gapped states, and obtain the characteristic frequency dependence of each phase analytically using a low-energy continuum model. The frequency dependence of longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities obeys scaling relations that are derived from the winding number of the parent multi-Weyl semimetal phase and can be used to distinguish these electronic states of matter.
After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral anomaly induced linear Hall effect, the magnitude of CNHE decreases with the topological charge n. Interestingly, we find that unlike the case of n=1, the CNHE has different behaviors in different planes. Our prediction on the behavior of CNHE in mWSM can directly be checked in experiments.
The Fermi arcs of topological surface states in the three-dimensional multi-Weyl semimetals on surfaces by a continuum model are investigated systematically. We calculated analytically the energy spectra and wave function for bulk quadratic- and cubic-Weyl semimetal with a single Weyl point. The Fermi arcs of topological surface states in Weyl semimetals with single- and double-pair Weyl points are investigated systematically. The evolution of the Fermi arcs of surface states variating with the boundary parameter is investigated and the topological Lifshitz phase transition of the Fermi arc connection is clearly demonstrated. Besides, the boundary condition for the double parallel flat boundary of Weyl semimetal is deduced with a Lagrangian formalism.
We present results of a theoretical study of photocurrents in the Weyl semimetals belonging to the gyrotropic symmetry classes. We show that, in weakly gyrotropic symmetry classes C$_{nv}$ ($n = 3,4,6$), the circular photocurrent transverse to the incidence direction appears only with account, in the electron effective Hamiltonian, for both linear and quadratic or cubic in quasi-momentum spin-dependent terms as well as a spin-independent term resulting in the tilt of the cone dispersion. A polarization-independent magneto-induced photocurrent is predicted which is also allowed in gyrotropic systems only. For crystals of the C$_{2v}$ symmetry, we consider a microscopic mechanism of the photocurrent in a quantized magnetic field which is generated under direct optical transitions between the ground and the first excited magnetic subbands. It is shown that this current becomes nonzero with allowance for anisotropic tilt of the dispersion cones.
