We propose two nonconforming finite elements to approximate a boundary value problem arising from strain gradient elasticity, which is a higher-order perturbation of the linearized elastic system. Our elements are H$^2-$nonconforming while H$^1-$conforming. We show both elements converges in the energy norm uniformly with respect to the perturbation parameter.

We establish a new H2 Korns inequality and its discrete analog, which greatly simplify the construction of nonconforming elements for a linear strain gradient elastic model. The Specht triangle [41] and the NZT tetrahedron [45] are analyzed as two typical representatives for robust nonconforming elements in the sense that the rate of convergence is independent of the small material parameter. We construct new regularized interpolation estimate and the enriching operator for both elements, and prove the error estimates under minimal smoothness assumption on the solution. Numerical results are consistent with the theoretical prediction.
We propose a family of mixed finite element that is robust for the nearly incompressible strain gradient model, which is a fourth order singular perturbation elliptic system. The element is similar to the Taylor-Hood element in the Stokes flow. Using a uniform stable Fortin operator for the mixed finite element pairs, we are able to prove the optimal rate of convergence that is robust in the incompressible limit. Moreover, we estimate the convergence rate of the numerical solution to the unperturbed second order elliptic system. Numerical results for both smooth solutions and the solutions with sharp layers confirm the theoretical prediction.
In this work we construct a low-order nonconforming approximation method for linear elasticity problems supporting general meshes and valid in two and three space dimensions. The method is obtained by hacking the Hybrid High-Order method, that requires the use of polynomials of degree $kge1$ for stability. Specifically, we show that coercivity can be recovered for $k=0$ by introducing a novel term that penalises the jumps of the displacement reconstruction across mesh faces. This term plays a key role in the fulfillment of a discrete Korn inequality on broken polynomial spaces, for which a novel proof valid for general polyhedral meshes is provided. Locking-free error estimates are derived for both the energy- and the $L^2$-norms of the error, that are shown to convergence, for smooth solutions, as $h$ and $h^2$, respectively (here, $h$ denotes the meshsize). A thorough numerical validation on a complete panel of two- and three-dimensional test cases is provided.

In this paper, three high-accuracy methods for eigenvalues of second order elliptic operators are proposed by using the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart(CR for short) element and the nonconforming enriched Crouzeix-Raviart(ECR for short) element. They are based on a crucial full one order superconvergence of the first order mixed Raviart-Thomas(RT for short) element. The main ingredient of such a superconvergence analysis is to employ a discrete Helmholtz decomposition of the difference between the canonical interpolation and the finite element solution of the RT element. In particular, it allows for some vital cancellation between terms in one key sum of boundary terms. Consequently, a full one order superconvergence follows from a special relation between the CR element and the RT element, and the equivalence between the ECR element and the RT element for these two nonconforming elements. These superconvergence results improve those in literature from a half order to a full one order for the RT element, the CR element and the ECR element. Based on the aforementioned superconvergence of the RT element, asymptotic expansions of eigenvalues are established and employed to achieve high accuracy extrapolation methods for these two nonconforming elements. In contrast to a classic analysis in literature, the novelty herein is to use not only the canonical interpolations of these nonconforming elements but also that of the RT element to analyze such asymptotic expansions. Based on the superconvergence of these nonconforming elements, asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimators of eigenvalues are constructed and analyzed for them. Finally, two post-processing methods are proposed to improve accuracy of approximate eigenvalues by employing these a posteriori error estimators.Numerical tests are provided to justify and compare the performance of the aforementioned methods.
We consider the nearly incompressible linear elasticity problem with an uncertain spatially varying Youngs modulus. The uncertainty is modelled with a finite set of parameters with prescribed probability distribution. We introduce a novel three-field mixed variational formulation of the PDE model and discuss its approximation by stochastic Galerkin mixed finite element techniques. First, we establish the well posedness of the proposed variational formulation and the associated finite-dimensional approximation. Second, we focus on the efficient solution of the associated large and indefinite linear system of equations. A new preconditioner is introduced for use with the minimal residual method (MINRES). Eigenvalue bounds for the preconditioned system are established and shown to be independent of the discretisation parameters and the Poisson ratio. The S-IFISS software used for computation is available online.
