As music streaming services dominate the music industry, the playlist is becoming an increasingly crucial element of music consumption. Con- sequently, the music recommendation problem is often casted as a playlist generation prob- lem. Better understanding of the playlist is there- fore necessary for developing better playlist gen- eration algorithms. In this work, we analyse two playlist datasets to investigate some com- monly assumed hypotheses about playlists. Our findings indicate that deeper understanding of playlists is needed to provide better prior infor- mation and improve machine learning algorithms in the design of recommendation systems.

In this paper, we propose a cross-modal variational auto-encoder (CMVAE) for content-based micro-video background music recommendation. CMVAE is a hierarchical Bayesian generative model that matches relevant background music to a micro-video by projecting these two multimodal inputs into a shared low-dimensional latent space, where the alignment of two corresponding embeddings of a matched video-music pair is achieved by cross-generation. Moreover, the multimodal information is fused by the product-of-experts (PoE) principle, where the semantic information in visual and textual modalities of the micro-video are weighted according to their variance estimations such that the modality with a lower noise level is given more weights. Therefore, the micro-video latent variables contain less irrelevant information that results in a more robust model generalization. Furthermore, we establish a large-scale content-based micro-video background music recommendation dataset, TT-150k, composed of approximately 3,000 different background music clips associated to 150,000 micro-videos from different users. Extensive experiments on the established TT-150k dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. A qualitative assessment of CMVAE by visualizing some recommendation results is also included.
Descriptions are often provided along with recommendations to help users discovery. Recommending automatically generated music playlists (e.g. personalised playlists) introduces the problem of generating descriptions. In this paper, we propose a method for generating music playlist descriptions, which is called as music captioning. In the proposed method, audio content analysis and natural language processing are adopted to utilise the information of each track.
Driving and music listening are two inseparable everyday activities for millions of people today in the world. Considering the high correlation between music, mood and driving comfort and safety, it makes sense to use appropriate and intelligent music recommendations based on the mood of drivers and songs in the context of car driving. The objective of this paper is to present the project of a contextual mood-based music recommender system capable of regulating the drivers mood and trying to have a positive influence on her driving behaviour. Here we present the proof of concept of the system and describe the techniques and technologies that are part of it. Further possible future improvements on each of the building blocks are also presented.
Analogy-making is a key method for computer algorithms to generate both natural and creative music pieces. In general, an analogy is made by partially transferring the music abstractions, i.e., high-level representations and their relationships, from one piece to another; however, this procedure requires disentangling music representations, which usually takes little effort for musicians but is non-trivial for computers. Three sub-problems arise: extracting latent representations from the observation, disentangling the representations so that each part has a unique semantic interpretation, and mapping the latent representations back to actual music. In this paper, we contribute an explicitly-constrained variational autoencoder (EC$^2$-VAE) as a unified solution to all three sub-problems. We focus on disentangling the pitch and rhythm representations of 8-beat music clips conditioned on chords. In producing music analogies, this model helps us to realize the imaginary situation of what if a piece is composed using a different pitch contour, rhythm pattern, or chord progression by borrowing the representations from other pieces. Finally, we validate the proposed disentanglement method using objective measurements and evaluate the analogy examples by a subjective study.
Most modern recommendation systems use the approach of collaborative filtering: users that are believed to behave alike are used to produce recommendations. In this work we describe an application (Liquid FM) taking a completely different approach. Liquid FM is a music recommendation system that makes the user responsible for the recommended items. Suggestions are the result of a voting scheme, employing the idea of viscous democracy. Liquid FM can also be thought of as the first testbed for this voting system. In this paper we outline the design and architecture of the application, both from the theoretical and from the implementation viewpoints.
