Massive stars shape their surroundings with mass loss from winds during their lifetimes. Fast ejecta from supernovae, from these massive stars, shocks this circumstellar medium. Emission generated by this interaction provides a window into the final stages of stellar evolution, by probing the history of mass loss from the progenitor. Here we use Chandra and Swift x-ray observations of the type II-P/L SN 2013ej to probe the history of mass loss from its progenitor. We model the observed x-rays as emission from both heated circumstellar matter and supernova ejecta. The circumstellar density profile probed by the supernova shock reveals a history of steady mass loss during the final 400 years. The inferred mass loss rate of $3 times 10^{-6} {rm ; M_odot ; yr^{-1}}$ points back to a 14 $M_odot$ progenitor. Soon after the explosion we find significant absorption of reverse shock emission by a cooling shell. The column depth of this shell observed in absorption provides an independent and consistent measurement of the circumstellar density seen in emission. We also determine the efficiency of cosmic ray acceleration from x-rays produced by Inverse Compton scattering of optical photons by relativistic electrons. Only about 1 percent of the thermal energy is used to accelerate electrons. Our x-ray observations and modeling provides stringent tests for models of massive stellar evolution and micro-physics of shocks.

Supernova (SN) 2018cow (or AT2018cow) is an optical transient detected in the galaxy CGCG 137-068. It has been classified as a SN due to various characteristics in its optical spectra. The transient is also a bright X-ray source. We present results of the analysis of ~62ks of X-ray observations taken with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory over 27 days. We found a variable behavior in the 0.3-10 keV X-ray light curve of SN 2018cow, with variability timescales of days. The observed X-ray variability could be due to the interaction between the SN ejecta and a non-uniform circumstellar medium, perhaps related to previous mass ejections from a luminous-blue-variable-like progenitor.
The origin of the diverse light-curve shapes of Type II supernovae (SNe), and whether they come from similar or distinct progenitors, has been actively discussed for decades. Here we report spectropolarimetry of two fast declining Type II (Type IIL) SNe: SN 2013ej and SN 2017ahn. SN 2013ej exhibited high continuum polarization from very soon after the explosion to the radioactive tail phase with time-variable polarization angles. The origin of this polarimetric behavior can be interpreted as the combination of two different aspherical structures, namely an aspherical interaction of the SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM) and an inherently aspherical explosion. Aspherical explosions are a common feature of slowly declining Type II (Type IIP) SNe. By contrast, SN 2017ahn showed low polarization not only in the photospheric phase but also in the radioactive tail phase. This low polarization in the tail phase, which has never before been observed in other Type IIP/L SNe, suggests that the explosion of SN 2017ahn was nearly spherical. These observations imply that Type IIL SNe have, at least, two different origins: they result from stars that have different explosion properties and/or different mass-loss processes. This fact might indicate that 13ej-like Type IIL SNe originate from a similar progenitor to those of Type IIP SNe accompanied by an aspherical CSM interaction, while 17ahn-like Type IIL SNe come from a more massive progenitor with less hydrogen in its envelope.
We present the results of ALMA band 3 observations of a nearby type Ic supernova (SN) 2020oi. Under the standard assumptions on the SN-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction and the synchrotron emission, the data indicate that the CSM structure deviates from a smooth distribution expected from the steady-state mass loss in the very vicinity of the SN (~10^{15} cm), which is then connected to the outer smooth distribution (~10^{16} cm). This structure is further confirmed through the light curve modeling of the whole radio data set as combined with data at lower frequency previously reported. Being an explosion of a bare carbon-oxygen (C+O) star having a fast wind, we can trace the mass-loss history of the progenitor of SN 2020oi in the final year. The inferred non-smooth CSM distribution corresponds to fluctuations on the sub-year time scale in the mass-loss history toward the SN explosion. Our finding suggests that the pre-SN activity is likely driven by the accelerated change in the nuclear burning stage in the last moments just before the massive stars demise. The structure of the CSM derived in this study is beyond the applicability of the other methods at optical wavelengths, highlighting an importance and uniqueness of quick follow-up observations of SNe by ALMA and other radio facilities.

X-ray grating spectra have opened a new window on the nova physics. High signal-to-noise spectra have been obtained for 12 novae after the outburst in the last 13 years with the Chandra and XMM-Newton gratings. They offer the only way to probe the temperature, effective gravity and chemical composition of the hydrogen burning white dwarf before it turns off. These spectra also allow an analysis of the ejecta, which can be photoionized by the hot white dwarf, but more often seem to undergo collisional ionization. The long observations required for the gratings have revealed semi-regular and irregular variability in X-ray flux and spectra. Large short term variability is especially evident in the first weeks after the ejecta have become transparent to the central supersoft X-ray source. Thanks to Chandra and XMM-Newton, we have discovered violent phenomena in the ejecta, discrete shell ejection, and clumpy emission regions. As expected, we have also unveiled the white dwarf characteristics. The peak white dwarf effective temperature in the targets of our samples varies between ~400,000 K and over a million K, with most cases closer to the upper end, although for two novae only upper limits around 200,000 K were obtained. A combination of results from different X-ray satellites and instruments, including Swift and ROSAT, shows that the shorter is the supersoft X-ray phase, the lower is the white dwarf peak effective temperature, consistently with theoretical predictions. The peak temperature is also inversely correlated with t(2) the time for a decay by 2 mag in optical. I strongly advocate the use of white dwarf atmospheric models to obtain a coherent physical picture of the hydrogen burning process and of the surrounding ejecta.
We use natural seeing imaging of SN 2013ej in M74 to identify a progenitor candidate in archival {it Hubble Space Telescope} + ACS images. We find a source coincident with the SN in the {it F814W}-filter, however the position of the progenitor candidate in contemporaneous {it F435W} and {it F555W}-filters is significantly offset. We conclude that the progenitor candidate is in fact two physically unrelated sources; a blue source which is likely unrelated to the SN, and a red source which we suggest exploded as SN 2013ej. Deep images with the same instrument onboard {it HST} taken when the supernova has faded (in approximately two years time) will allow us to accurately characterise the unrelated neighbouring source and hence determine the intrinsic flux of the progenitor in three filters. We suggest that the {it F814W} flux is dominated by the progenitor of SN 2013ej, and assuming a bolometric correction appropriate to an M-type supergiant, we estimate that the mass of the progenitor of SN 2013ej was between 8 -- 15.5 M$_{odot}$.
