In this paper, we study the quantity of computational resources (state machine states and/or probabilistic transition precision) needed to solve specific problems in a single hop network where nodes communicate using only beeps. We begin by focusing on randomized leader election. We prove a lower bound on the states required to solve this problem with a given error bound, probability precision, and (when relevant) network size lower bound. We then show the bound tight with a matching upper bound. Noting that our optimal upper bound is slow, we describe two faster algorithms that trade some state optimality to gain efficiency. We then turn our attention to more general classes of problems by proving that once you have enough states to solve leader election with a given error bound, you have (within constant factors) enough states to simulate correctly, with this same error bound, a logspace TM with a constant number of unary input tapes: allowing you to solve a large and expressive set of problems. These results identify a key simplicity threshold beyond which useful distributed computation is possible in the beeping model.

We study the complexity of the classic Hylland-Zeckhauser scheme [HZ79] for one-sided matching markets. We show that the problem of finding an $epsilon$-approximate equilibrium in the HZ scheme is PPAD-hard, and this holds even when $epsilon$ is polynomially small and when each agent has no more than four distinct utility values. Our hardness result, when combined with the PPAD membership result of [VY21], resolves the approximation complexity of the HZ scheme. We also show that the problem of approximating the optimal social welfare (the weight of the matching) achievable by HZ equilibria within a certain constant factor is NP-hard.
Energy is often the most constrained resource in networks of battery-powered devices, and as devices become smaller, they spend a larger fraction of their energy on communication (transceiver usage) not computation. As an imperfect proxy for true energy usage, we define energy complexity to be the number of time slots a device transmits/listens; idle time and computation are free. In this paper we investigate the energy complexity of fundamental communication primitives such as broadcast in multi-hop radio networks. We consider models with collision detection (CD) and without (No-CD), as well as both randomized and deterministic algorithms. Some take-away messages from this work include: 1. The energy complexity of broadcast in a multi-hop network is intimately connected to the time complexity of leader election in a single-hop (clique) network. Many existing lower bounds on time complexity immediately transfer to energy complexity. For example, in the CD and No-CD models, we need $Omega(log n)$ and $Omega(log^2 n)$ energy, respectively. 2. The energy lower bounds above can almost be achieved, given sufficient ($Omega(n)$) time. In the CD and No-CD models we can solve broadcast using $O(frac{log nloglog n}{logloglog n})$ energy and $O(log^3 n)$ energy, respectively. 3. The complexity measures of Energy and Time are in conflict, and it is an open problem whether both can be minimized simultaneously. We give a tradeoff showing it is possible to be nearly optimal in both measures simultaneously. For any constant $epsilon>0$, broadcast can be solved in $O(D^{1+epsilon}log^{O(1/epsilon)} n)$ time with $O(log^{O(1/epsilon)} n)$ energy, where $D$ is the diameter of the network.

In this paper, we present several improvements in the parallelization of the in-place merge algorithm, which merges two contiguous sorted arrays into one with an O(T) space complexity (where T is the number of threads). The approach divides the two arrays into as many pairs of partitions as there are threads available; such that each thread can later merge a pair of partitions independently of the others. We extend the existing method by proposing a new algorithm to find the median of two partitions. Additionally, we provide a new strategy to divide the input arrays where we minimize the data movement, but at the cost of making this stage sequential. Finally, we provide the so-called linear shifting algorithm that swaps two partitions in-place with contiguous data access. We emphasize that our approach is straightforward to implement and that it can also be used for external (out of place) merging. The results demonstrate that it provides a significant speedup compared to sequential executions, when the size of the arrays is greater than a thousand elements.

Studying distributed computing through the lens of algebraic topology has been the source of many significant breakthroughs during the last two decades, especially in the design of lower bounds or impossibility results for deterministic algorithms. This paper aims at studying randomized synchronous distributed computing through the lens of algebraic topology. We do so by studying the wide class of (input-free) symmetry-breaking tasks, e.g., leader election, in synchronous fault-free anonymous systems. We show that it is possible to redefine solvability of a task locally, i.e., for each simplex of the protocol complex individually, without requiring any global consistency. However, this approach has a drawback: it eliminates the topological aspect of the computation, since a single facet has a trivial topological structure. To overcome this issue, we introduce a projection $pi$ of both protocol and output complexes, where every simplex $sigma$ is mapped to a complex $pi(sigma)$; the later has a rich structure that replaces the structure we lost by considering one single facet at a time. To show the significance and applicability of our topological approach, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for solving leader election in synchronous fault-free anonymous shared-memory and message-passing models. In both models, we consider scenarios in which there might be correlations between the random values provided to the nodes. In particular, different parties might have access to the same randomness source so their randomness is not independent but equal. Interestingly, we find that solvability of leader election relates to the number of parties that possess correlated randomness, either directly or via their greatest common divisor, depending on the specific communication model.
