We examine quantum normal typicality and ergodicity properties for quantum systems whose dynamics are generated by Hamiltonians which have residual degeneracy in their spectrum and resonance in their energy gaps. Such systems can be considered atypical in the sense that degeneracy, which is usually a sign of symmetry, is naturally broken in typical systems due to stochastic perturbations. In particular, we prove a version of von Neumanns quantum ergodic theorem, where a modified condition needs to hold in order to have normal typicality and ergodicity. As a result, we show that degeneracy of spectrum does not considerably modify the condition of the theorem, whereas the existence of resonance is more dominant for obstructing ergodicity.

Information on quantum systems can be obtained only when they are open (or opened) in relation to a certain environment. As a matter of fact, realistic open quantum systems appear in very different shape. We sketch the theoretical description of open quantum systems by means of a projection operator formalism elaborated many years ago, and applied by now to the description of different open quantum systems. The Hamiltonian describing the open quantum system is non-Hermitian. Most studied are the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of many-particle systems embedded in one environment. We point to the unsolved problems of this method when applied to the description of realistic many-body systems. We then underline the role played by the eigenfunctions of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Very interesting results originate from the fluctuations of the eigenfunctions in systems with gain and loss of excitons. They occur with an efficiency of nearly 100%. An example is the photosynthesis.
We consider a class of continuous-time stochastic growth models on $d$-dimensional lattice with non-negative real numbers as possible values per site. The class contains examples such as binary contact path process and potlatch process. We show the equivalence between the slow population growth and localization property that the time integral of the replica overlap diverges. We also prove, under reasonable assumptions, a localization property in a stronger form that the spatial distribution of the population does not decay uniformly in space.
We prove the quantum Zeno effect in open quantum systems whose evolution, governed by quantum dynamical semigroups, is repeatedly and frequently interrupted by the action of a quantum operation. For the case of a quantum dynamical semigroup with a bounded generator, our analysis leads to a refinement of existing results and extends them to a larger class of quantum operations. We also prove the existence of a novel strong quantum Zeno limit for quantum operations for which a certain spectral gap assumption, which all previous results relied on, is lifted. The quantum operations are instead required to satisfy a weaker property of strong power-convergence. In addition, we establish, for the first time, the existence of a quantum Zeno limit for the case of unbounded generators. We also provide a variety of physically interesting examples of quantum operations to which our results apply.
Many quantum statistical models are most conveniently formulated in terms of non-orthonormal bases. This is the case, for example, when mixtures and superpositions of coherent states are involved. In these instances, we show that the analytical evaluation of the quantum Fisher information may be greatly simplified by bypassing both the diagonalization of the density matrix and the orthogonalization of the basis. The key ingredient in our method is the Gramian matrix (i.e. the matrix of scalar products between basis elements), which may be interpreted as a metric tensor for index contraction. As an application, we derive novel analytical results for several estimation problems involving noisy Schroedinger cat states.
We consider a class of interacting particle systems with values in $[0,8)^{zd}$, of which the binary contact path process is an example. For $d ge 3$ and under a certain square integrability condition on the total number of the particles, we prove a central limit theorem for the density of the particles, together with upper bounds for the density of the most populated site and the replica overlap.
