The Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is a central and generic computational problem which provides a common framework for many theoretical and practical applications. A central line of research is concerned with the identification of classes of instances for which CSP can be solved in polynomial time; such classes are often called islands of tractability. A prominent way of defining islands of tractability for CSP is to restrict the relations that may occur in the constraints to a fixed set, called a constraint language, whereas a constraint language is conservative if it contains all unary relations. This paper addresses the general limit of the mentioned tractability results for CSP and #CSP, that they only apply to instances where all constraints belong to a single tractable language (in general, the union of two tractable languages isnt tractable). We show that we can overcome this limitation as long as we keep some control of how constraints over the various considered tractable languages interact with each other. For this purpose we utilize the notion of a emph{strong backdoor} of a CSP instance, as introduced by Williams et al. (IJCAI 2003), which is a set of variables that when instantiated moves the instance to an island of tractability, i.e., to a tractable class of instances. In this paper, we consider strong backdoors into emph{scattered classes}, consisting of CSP instances where each connected component belongs entirely to some class from a list of tractable classes. Our main result is an algorithm that, given a CSP instance with $n$ variables, finds in time $f(k)n^{O(1)}$ a strong backdoor into a scattered class (associated with a list of finite conservative constraint languages) of size $k$ or correctly decides that there isnt such a backdoor.
Structural decomposition methods have been developed for identifying tractable classes of instances of fundamental problems in databases, such as conjunctive queries and query containment, of the constraint satisfaction problem in artificial intelligence, or more generally of the homomorphism problem over relational structures. Most structural decomposition methods can be characterized through hypergraph games that are variations of the Robber and Cops graph game that characterizes the notion of treewidth. In particular, decomposition trees somehow correspond to monotone winning strategies, where the escape space of the robber on the hypergraph is shrunk monotonically by the cops. In fact, unlike the treewidth case, there are hypergraphs where monotonic strategies do not exist, while the robber can be captured by means of more complex non-monotonic strategies. However, these powerful strategies do not correspond in general to valid decompositions. The paper provides a general way to exploit the power of non-monotonic strategies, by allowing a disciplined form of non-monotonicity, characteristic of cops playing in a greedy way. It is shown that deciding the existence of a (non-monotone) greedy winning strategy (and compute one, if any) is tractable. Moreover, despite their non-monotonicity, such strategies always induce valid decomposition trees, which can be computed efficiently based on them. As a consequence, greedy strategies allow us to define new islands of tractability for the considered problems properly including all previously known classes of tractable instances.
We propose joinwidth, a new complexity parameter for the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). The definition of joinwidth is based on the arrangement of basic operations on relations (joins, projections, and pruning), which inherently reflects the steps required to solve the instance. We use joinwidth to obtain polynomial-time algorithms (if a corresponding decomposition is provided in the input) as well as fixed-parameter algorithms (if no such decomposition is provided) for solving the CSP. Joinwidth is a hybrid parameter, as it takes both the graphical structure as well as the constraint relations that appear in the instance into account. It has, therefore, the potential to capture larger classes of tractable instances than purely structural parameters like hypertree width and the more general fractional hypertree width (fhtw). Indeed, we show that any class of instances of bounded fhtw also has bounded joinwidth, and that there exist classes of instances of bounded joinwidth and unbounded fhtw, so bounded joinwidth properly generalizes bounded fhtw. We further show that bounded joinwidth also properly generalizes several other known hybrid restrictions, such as fhtw with degree constraints and functional dependencies. In this sense, bounded joinwidth can be seen as a unifying principle that explains the tractability of several seemingly unrelated classes of CSP instances.
Designing a search heuristic for constraint programming that is reliable across problem domains has been an important research topic in recent years. This paper concentrates on one family of candidates: counting-based search. Such heuristics seek to make branching decisions that preserve most of the solutions by determining what proportion of solutions to each individual constraint agree with that decision. Whereas most generic search heuristics in constraint programming rely on local information at the level of the individual variable, our search heuristics are based on more global information at the constraint level. We design several algorithms that are used to count the number of solutions to specific families of constraints and propose some search heuristics exploiting such information. The experimental part of the paper considers eight problem domains ranging from well-established benchmark puzzles to rostering and sport scheduling. An initial empirical analysis identifies heuristic maxSD as a robust candidate among our proposals.eWe then evaluate the latter against the state of the art, including the latest generic search heuristics, restarts, and discrepancy-based tree traversals. Experimental results show that counting-based search generally outperforms other generic heuristics.
For a finite relational structure A, let CSP(A) denote the CSP instances whose constraint relations are taken from A. The resulting family of problems CSP(A) has been considered heavily in a variety of computational contexts. In this article, we consider this family from the perspective of property testing: given an instance of a CSP and query access to an assignment, one wants to decide whether the assignment satisfies the instance, or is far from so doing. While previous works on this scenario studied concrete templates or restricted classes of structures, this article presents comprehensive classification theorems. Our first contribution is a dichotomy theorem completely characterizing the structures A such that CSP(A) is constant-query testable: (i) If A has a majority polymorphism and a Maltsev polymorphism, then CSP(A) is constant-query testable with one-sided error. (ii) Else, testing CSP(A) requires a super-constant number of queries. Let $exists$CSP(A) denote the extension of CSP(A) to instances which may include existentially quantified variables. Our second contribution is to classify all structures A in terms of the number of queries needed to test assignments to instances of $exists$CSP(A), with one-sided error. More specifically, we show the following trichotomy: (i) If A has a majority polymorphism and a Maltsev polymorphism, then $exists$CSP(A) is constant-query testable with one-sided error. (ii) Else, if A has a $(k + 1)$-ary near-unanimity polymorphism for some $k geq 2$, and no Maltsev polymorphism then $exists$CSP(A) is not constant-query testable (even with two-sided error) but is sublinear-query testable with one-sided error. (iii) Else, testing $exists$CSP(A) with one-sided error requires a linear number of queries.
We consider the problem of approximately solving constraint satisfaction problems with arity $k > 2$ ($k$-CSPs) on instances satisfying certain expansion properties, when viewed as hypergraphs. Random instances of $k$-CSPs, which are also highly expanding, are well-known to be hard to approximate using known algorithmic techniques (and are widely believed to be hard to approximate in polynomial time). However, we show that this is not necessarily the case for instances where the hypergraph is a high-dimensional expander. We consider the spectral definition of high-dimensional expansion used by Dinur and Kaufman [FOCS 2017] to construct certain primitives related to PCPs. They measure the expansion in terms of a parameter $gamma$ which is the analogue of the second singular value for expanding graphs. Extending the results by Barak, Raghavendra and Steurer [FOCS 2011] for 2-CSPs, we show that if an instance of MAX k-CSP over alphabet $[q]$ is a high-dimensional expander with parameter $gamma$, then it is possible to approximate the maximum fraction of satisfiable constraints up to an additive error $epsilon$ using $q^{O(k)} cdot (k/epsilon)^{O(1)}$ levels of the sum-of-squares SDP hierarchy, provided $gamma leq epsilon^{O(1)} cdot (1/(kq))^{O(k)}$. Based on our analysis, we also suggest a notion of threshold-rank for hypergraphs, which can be used to extend the results for approximating 2-CSPs on low threshold-rank graphs. We show that if an instance of MAX k-CSP has threshold rank $r$ for a threshold $tau = (epsilon/k)^{O(1)} cdot (1/q)^{O(k)}$, then it is possible to approximately solve the instance up to additive error $epsilon$, using $r cdot q^{O(k)} cdot (k/epsilon)^{O(1)}$ levels of the sum-of-squares hierarchy. As in the case of graphs, high-dimensional expanders (with sufficiently small $gamma$) have threshold rank 1 according to our definition.
