Here we study the effect of La doping in EuO thin films using SQUID magnetometry, muon spin rotation ($mu$SR), polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR), and density functional theory (DFT). The $mu$SR data shows that the La$_{0.15}$Eu$_{0.85}$O is homogeneously magnetically ordered up to its elevated $T_{rm C}$. It is concluded that bound magnetic polaron behavior does not explain the increase in $T_{rm C}$ and an RKKY-like interaction is consistent with the $mu$SR data. The estimation of the magnetic moment by DFT simulations concurs with the results obtained by PNR, showing a reduction of the magnetic moment per La$_{x}$Eu$_{1-x}$O for increasing lanthanum doping. This reduction of the magnetic moment is explained by the reduction of the number of Eu-4$f$ electrons present in all the magnetic interactions in EuO films. Finally, we show that an upwards shift of the Fermi energy with La or Gd doping gives rise to half-metallicity for doping levels as high as 3.2 %.

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Eu(1-x)Gd(x)O through the ferromagnetic metal-insulator transition. In the ferromagnetic phase, we observe Fermi surface pockets at the Brillouin zone boundary, consistent with density functional theory, which predicts a half metal. Upon warming into the paramagnetic state, our results reveal a strong momentum-dependent evolution of the electronic structure, where the metallic states at the zone boundary are replaced by pseudogapped states at the Brillouin zone center due to the absence of magnetic long-range order of the Eu 4f moments.
We explore the magnetically-ordered ground state of the isovalently-substituted Mott-insulator Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ for $x$ $leq$ 0.3 via single crystal growth, magnetometry, neutron diffraction, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), muon spin rotation ($mu$SR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that the decrease in the magnetic transition temperature on approaching the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase boundary at the La concentration $x_c$ $approx$ 0.3 is accompanied by a strong suppression of both bulk and local ordered magnetic moments, along with a volume-wise separation into magnetically-ordered and paramagnetic regions. The thermal phase transition does not show conventional second-order behavior, since neither a clear signature of dynamic critical behavior nor a power-law divergence of the magnetic correlation length is found for the studied substitution range; this finding becomes increasingly obvious with substitution. Finally, from SANS and magnetometry measurements, we discern a crossover from easy-axis to easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy with increasing La substitution. These results indicate complex changes in magnetic structure upon approaching the phase boundary.
We report new zero-field muon spin relaxation and neutron spin echo measurements in ferromagnetic (FM) (La,Ca)MnO3 which taken together suggest two spatially separated regions in close proximity possessing very different Mn-ion spin dynamics. One region corresponds to an extended cluster which displays critical slowing down near Tc and an increasing volume fraction below Tc. The second region possesses more slowly fluctuating spins and a decreasing volume fraction below Tc. These data are discussed in terms of the growth of small polarons into overlapping regions of correlated spins below Tc, resulting in a microscopically inhomogeneous FM transition.
The correlation between magnetic properties and microscopic structural aspects in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetization as a function of the Mn concentration $x$. The occurrence of high ferromagnetic-transition temperatures in the rhombohedrally distorted phase of slowly-cooled Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is shown to be directly correlated with the formation and coexistence of strongly-distorted Mn-poor and weakly-distorted Mn-rich regions. It is demonstrated that the weakly-distorted phase fraction is responsible for the occurrence of high-transition temperatures in Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te. When the Mn concentration becomes larger, the Mn-rich regions start to switch into the undistorted cubic structure, and the transition temperature is suppressed concurrently. By identifying suitable annealing conditions, we successfully increased the transition temperature to above 200 K for Mn concentrations close to the cubic phase. Structural data indicate that the weakly-distorted phase fraction can be restored at the expense of the cubic regions upon the enhancement of the transition temperature, clearly establishing the direct link between high-transition temperatures and the weakly-distorted Mn-rich phase fraction.
We investigated the magnetic properties of (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO with $x$ varying from 0.005 to 0.05 at an external magnetic field of 1000 Oe. For doping levels of $x$ $leq$ 0.01, the system remains paramagnetic down to the lowest measurable temperature of 2 K. Only when the doping level increases to $x$ = 0.02 does the ferromagnetic ordering appear. Our analysis indicates that antiferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate for $x$ $leq$ 0.01, as shown by the negative Weiss temperature fitted from the magnetization data. The Weiss temperature becomes positive, i.e., ferromagnetic coupling starts to dominate, for $x$ $geq$ 0.02. The Mn-Mn spin interaction parameter $mid$$2J/k_B$$mid$ is estimated to be in the order of 10 K for both $x$ $leq$ 0.01 (antiferromagnetic ordered state) and $x$ $geq$ 0.02 (ferromagnetic ordered state). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in carrier-mediated ferromagnetic systems.
