We have performed bulk-sensitive spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in order to clarify the intrinsic spin-resolved electronic states of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO2. We used CrO2 epitaxial films on TiO2(100), which shows a peak at 1 eV with a clear Fermi edge, consistent with the bulk-sensitive PES spectrum for CrO2. In spin-resolved spectra at 40 K, while the Fermi edge was observed in the spin up (majority spin) state, no states at the Fermi level (EF) with an energy gap of 0.5 eV below EF was observed in the spin down (minority spin) state. At 300 K, the gap in the spin down state closes. These results are consistent with resistivity measurements and magnetic hysteresis curves of the fabricated CrO2 film, constituting spectroscopic evidence for the half-metallicity of CrO2 at low temperature and reducing the spin polarization at room temperature. We also discuss the electron correlation effects of Cr 3d.

Bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) reveals for as-grown epitaxial films of half-metallic ferromagnetic CrO2(100) a pronounced screening feature in the Cr 2p3/2 core level and an asymmetry in the O 1s core level. This gives evidence of a finite, metal-type Fermi edge, which is surprisingly not observed in HAXPES. A spectral weight shift in HAXPES away from the Fermi energy is attributed to single-ion recoil effects due to high energy photoelectrons. In conjunction with inverse PES the intrinsic correlated Mott-Hubbard-type electronic structure is unravelled, yielding an averaged Coulomb correlation energy Uav ~ 3.2 eV.
High resolution angle resolved photoemission measurements and band structure calculations are carried out to study the electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$. All the observed bands are nearly linear that extend to a wide energy range. The measured Fermi surface mainly consists of one hole pocket around $Gamma$ and a strong spot at Y which are formed from the crossing points of the linear bands. The measured electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$ is unusual and deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. These results will stimulate further efforts to theoretically understand the electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$ and search for novel properties in this Dirac material.

The electronic structure of $p$-type doped BiTe is studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to experimentally confirm the mechanism responsible for the high thermoelectric figure of merit. Our ARPES study shows that the band edges are located off the $Gamma$-Z line in the Brillouin zone, which provides direct observation that the spin-orbit interaction is a key factor to understand the electronic structure and the corresponding thermoelectric properties of BiTe. Successive time dependent ARPES measurement also reveals that the electron-like bands crossing E$_F$ near the $underline{Gamma}$ point are formed in an hour after cleaving the crystals. We interpret these as surface states induced by surface band bending, possibly due to quintuple inter-layer distance change of BiTe.

Electronic structure of single crystalline Ba(Zn$_{0.875}$Mn$_{0.125}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, parent compound of the recently founded high-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor, was studied by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Through systematically photon energy and polarization dependent measurements, the energy bands along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions were experimentally determined. Except the localized states of Mn, the measured band dispersions agree very well with the first-principle calculations of undoped BaZn$_{2}$As$_{2}$. A new feature related to Mn 3d states was identified at the binding energies of about -1.6 eV besides the previously observed feature at about -3.3 eV. We suggest that the hybridization between Mn and As orbitals strongly enhanced the density of states around -1.6 eV. Although our resolution is much better compared with previous soft X-ray photoemission experiments, no clear hybridization gap between Mn 3d states and the valence bands proposed by previous model calculations was detected.
We have investigated the electronic states and spin polarization of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$ (100) epitaxial films by bulk-sensitive spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a focus on non-quasiparticle (NQP) states derived from electron-magnon interactions. We found that the averaged values of the spin polarization are approximately 100% and 40% at 40 K and 300 K, respectively. This is consistent with the previously reported result [H. Fujiwara et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 106, 202404 (2015).]. At 100 K, peculiar spin depolarization was observed at the Fermi level ($E_{F}$), which is supported by theoretical calculations predicting NQP states. This suggests the possible appearance of NQP states in CrO$_2$. We also compare the temperature dependence of our spin polarizations with that of the magnetization.
