The effects of local electronic interactions and finite temperatures upon the transmission across the Cu$_4$CoCu$_4$ metallic heterostructure are studied in a combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory. It is shown that, as the electronic correlations are taken into account via a local but dynamic self-energy, the total transmission at the Fermi level gets reduced (predominantly in the minority spin channel), whereby the spin polarization of the transmission increases. The latter is due to a more significant $d$-electrons contribution, as compared to the non-correlated case in which the transport is dominated by $s$ and $p$ electrons.

We investigate half-metallicity in [001] stacked (CrAs)$_n$/(GaAs)$_n$ heterostructures with $n leq 3$ by means of a combined many-body and electronic structure calculation. Interface states in the presence of strong electronic correlations are discussed for the case $n=1$. For $n=2,3$ our results indicate that the minority spin half-metallic gap is suppressed by local correlations at finite temperatures, and continuously shrinks upon increasing the heterostructure period. Although around room temperature the magnetization of the heterostructure deviates by only $2%$ from the ideal integer value, finite temperature polarization at $E_F$ is reduced by at least $25%$. Below the Fermi level the minority spin highest valence states are found to localize more on the GaAs layers while lowest conduction states have a many-body origin. Our results, therefore, suggest that in these heterostructures holes and electrons remain separated among different layers.
At interfaces between oxide materials, lattice and electronic reconstructions always play important roles in exotic phenomena. In this study, the density functional theory and maximally localized Wannier functions are employed to investigate the (LaTiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaVO$_3$)$_n$ magnetic superlattices. The electron transfer from Ti$^{3+}$ to V$^{3+}$ is predicted, which violates the intuitive band alignment based on the electronic structures of LaTiO$_3$ and LaVO$_3$. Such unconventional charge transfer quenches the magnetism of LaTiO$_3$ layer mostly and leads to metal-insulator transition in the $n=1$ superlattice when the stacking orientation is altered. In addition, the compatibility among the polar structure, ferrimagnetism, and metallicity is predicted in the $n=2$ superlattice.

In the newly discovered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, both axion insulator state and quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have been observed by tuning the magnetic structure. The related (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures with increased tuning knobs, are predicted to be a more versatile platform for exotic topological states. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on a series of the heterostructures (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$). A universal gapless Dirac cone is observed at the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ terminated (0001) surfaces in all systems. This is in sharp contrast to the expected gap from the original antiferromagnetic ground state, indicating an altered magnetic structure near the surface, possibly due to the surface termination. In the meantime, the electron band dispersion of the surface states, presumably dominated by the top surface, is found to be sensitive to different stackings of the underlying MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. Our results suggest the high tunability of both magnetic and electronic structures of the topological surface states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures, which is essential in realizing various novel topological states.
We present structure calculations of neutral and singly ionized Mg clusters of up to 30 atoms, as well as Na clusters of up to 10 atoms. The calculations have been performed using density functional theory (DFT) within the local (spin-)density approximation, ion cores are described by pseudopotentials. We have utilized a new algorithm for solving the Kohn-Sham equations that is formulated entirely in coordinate space and, thus, permits straightforward control of the spatial resolution. Our numerical method is particularly suitable for modern parallel computer architectures; we have thus been able to combine an unrestricted simulated annealing procedure with electronic structure calculations of high spatial resolution, corresponding to a plane-wave cutoff of 954eV for Mg. We report the geometric structures of the resulting ground-state configurations and a few low-lying isomers. The energetics and HOMO-LUMO gaps of the ground-state configurations are carefully examined and related to their stability properties. No evidence for a non-metal to metal transition in neutral and positively charged Mg clusters is found in the regime of ion numbers examined here.
It is generally accepted that the main cause of ultracold neutron (UCN) losses in storage traps is the upscattering to the thermal energy range by hydrogen adsorbed on the surface of the trap walls. However, the data on which this conclusion is based are poor and contradictory. Here, we report a measurement, performed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory UCN source, of the average energy of the flux of upscattered neutrons after the interaction of UCN with hydrogen bound in semicrystalline polymer PMP (tradename TPX), [C$_{6}$H$_{12}$]$_n$. Our analysis, performed with the MCNP code based on the application of the neutron scattering law to UCN upscattered by bound hydrogen in semicrystalline polyethylene, [C$_{2}$H$_{4}$]$_n$, leads us to a flux average energy value of 26$pm3$ meV in contradiction with previously reported experimental values of 10 to 13 meV and in agreement with the theoretical models of neutron heating implemented in the MCNP code.
