We show that the description of light in terms of Stokes operators in combination with the assumption of Gaussian statistics results in a dramatic simplification of the experimental study of fluctuations in the light transmitted through an atomic vapor: no local oscillator is required, the detected quadrature is easily selected by a wave-plate angle and the complete noise ellipsis reconstruction is obtained via matrix diagonalization. We provide empirical support for the assumption of Gaussian statistics in quasi-resonant light transmitted through an $^{87}$Rb vapor cell and we illustrate the suggested approach by studying the evolution of the fluctuation ellipsis as a function of laser detuning. Applying the method to two light beams obtained by parting squeezed light in a beamsplitter, we have measured entanglement and quantum discord.
We have studied relative-intensity fluctuations for a variable set of orthogonal elliptic polarization components of a linearly polarized laser beam traversing a resonant $^{87}$Rb vapor cell. Significant polarization squeezing at the threshold level (-3dB) required for the implementation of several continuous variables quantum protocols was observed. The extreme simplicity of the setup, based on standard polarization components, makes it particularly convenient for quantum information applications.
Squeezed states of light have received renewed attention due to their applicability to quantum-enhanced sensing. To take full advantage of their reduced noise properties to enhance atomic-based sensors, it is necessary to generate narrowband near or on atomic resonance single-mode squeezed states of light. We have previously generated bright two-mode squeezed states of light, or twin beams, that can be tuned to resonance with the D1 line of $^{87}$Rb with a non-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a double-lambda configuration in a $^{85}$Rb vapor cell. Here we report on the use of feedforward to transfer the amplitude quantum correlations present in the twin beams to a single beam for the generation of single-mode amplitude squeezed light. With this technique we obtain a single-mode squeezed state with a squeezing level of $-2.9pm0.1$ dB when it is tuned off-resonance and a level of $-2.0pm 0.1$ dB when it is tuned on resonance with the D1 $F=2$ to $F=2$ transition of $^{87}$Rb.
In an atomic ensemble, quantum information is typically carried as single collective excitations. It is very advantageous if the creation of single excitations is efficient and robust. Rydberg blockade enables deterministic creation of single excitations via collective Rabi oscillation by precisely controlling the pulse area, being sensitive to many experimental parameters. In this paper, we implement the adiabatic rapid passage technique to the Rydberg excitation process in a mesoscopic atomic ensemble. We make use of a two-photon excitation scheme with an intermediate state off-resonant and sweep the laser frequency of one excitation laser. We find the chirped scheme preserves internal phases of the collective Rydberg excitation and be more robust against variance of laser intensity and frequency detuning.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a universal quantum averaging process implementing the harmonic mean of quadrature variances. The harmonic mean protocol can be used to efficiently stabilize a set of fragile squeezed light sources with statistically fluctuating noise levels. The averaged variances are prepared probabilistically by means of linear optical interference and measurement induced conditioning. We verify that the implemented harmonic mean outperforms the standard arithmetic mean strategy. The effect of quantum averaging is experimentally tested both for uncorrelated and partially correlated noise sources with sub-Poissonian shot noise or super-Poissonian shot noise characteristics.
We propose a scheme for generating atomic NOON states via adiabatic passage. In the scheme, a double $Lambda$-type three-level atom is trapped in a bimodal cavity and two sets of $Lambda$-type three-level atoms are translated into and outside of two single mode cavities respectively. The three cavities connected by optical fibres are always in vacuum states. After a series of operations and suitable interaction time, we can obtain arbitrary large-$n$ NOON states of two sets of $Lambda$-type three-level atoms in distant cavities by performing a single projective measurement on the double $Lambda$-type three-level atom. Due to adiabatic elimination of atomic excited states and the application of adiabatic passage, our scheme is robust against the spontaneous emissions of atoms, the decays of fibres and cavities photon leakage. So the scheme has a high fidelity and feasibility under the current available techniques.
