We present a new spectral scheme for analysing functions of half-integer spin-weight on the $2$-sphere and demonstrate the stability and convergence properties of our implementation. The dynamical evolution of the Dirac equation on a manifold with spatial topology of $mathbb{S}^2$ via pseudo-spectral method is also demonstrated.

Many applications in science call for the numerical simulation of systems on manifolds with spherical topology. Through use of integer spin weighted spherical harmonics we present a method which allows for the implementation of arbitrary tensorial evolution equations. Our method combines two numerical techniques that were originally developed with different applications in mind. The first is Huffenberger and Wandelts spectral decomposition algorithm to perform the mapping from physical to spectral space. The second is the application of Luscombe and Lubans method, to convert numerically divergent linear recursions into stable nonlinear recursions, to the calculation of reduced Wigner d-functions. We give a detailed discussion of the theory and numerical implementation of our algorithm. The properties of our method are investigated by solving the scalar and vectorial advection equation on the sphere, as well as the 2+1 Maxwell equations on a deformed sphere.
We consider a massless higher spin field theory within the BRST approach and construct a general off-shell cubic vertex corresponding to irreducible higher spin fields of helicities $s_1, s_2, s_3$. Unlike the previous works on cubic vertices, which do not take into account of the trace constraints, we use the complete BRST operator, including the trace constraints that describe an irreducible representation with definite integer helicity. As a result, we generalize the cubic vertex found in [arXiv:1205.3131 [hep-th]] and calculate the new contributions to the vertex, which contain additional terms with a smaller number space-time derivatives of the fields as well as the terms without derivatives.
The derivation of spherical harmonics is the same in nearly every quantum mechanics textbook and classroom. It is found to be difficult to follow, hard to understand, and challenging to reproduce by most students. In this work, we show how one can determine spherical harmonics in a more natural way based on operators and a powerful identity called the exponential disentangling operator identity (known in quantum optics, but little used elsewhere). This new strategy follows naturally after one has introduced Dirac notation, computed the angular momentum algebra, and determined the action of the angular momentum raising and lowering operators on the simultaneous angular momentum eigenstates (under $hat L^2$ and $hat L_z$).
Recent interest in honeycomb lattice materials has focused on their potential to host quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. Variations in bond angles and spin allow a range of interesting behaviors on this lattice, from the predicted QSL ground state of the Kitaev model to exotic magnetic orders. Here we report the physical properties of two compounds with rare earths on an approximate honeycomb lattice. The isostructural compounds Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = $frac{9}{2}$) and Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = 4) permit a direct comparison of half-integer versus integer spins on this lattice. We find strikingly different magnetic properties for the two compounds. Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ $approx$ 2.5 K, and undergoes several magnetic transitions to other ordered states under applied field. Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn displays no magnetic ordering transition above T = 0.41 K, and may be proximate to a spin liquid state.
We present a model of (modified) gravity on spacetimes with fractal structure based on packing of spheres, which are (Euclidean) variants of the Packed Swiss Cheese Cosmology models. As the action functional for gravity we consider the spectral action of noncommutative geometry, and we compute its expansion on a space obtained as an Apollonian packing of 3-dimensional spheres inside a 4-dimensional ball. Using information from the zeta function of the Dirac operator of the spectral triple, we compute the leading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the spectral action. They consist of a zeta regularization of a divergent sum which involves the leading terms of the spectral actions of the individual spheres in the packing. This accounts for the contribution of the points 1 and 3 in the dimension spectrum (as in the case of a 3-sphere). There is an additional term coming from the residue at the additional point in the real dimension spectrum that corresponds to the packing constant, as well as a series of fluctuations coming from log-periodic oscillations, created by the points of the dimension spectrum that are off the real line. These terms detect the fractality of the residue set of the sphere packing. We show that the presence of fractality influences the shape of the slow-roll potential for inflation, obtained from the spectral action. We also discuss the effect of truncating the fractal structure at a certain scale related to the energy scale in the spectral action.
