We construct, for the first time, Abelian-Higgs vortices on certain compact surfaces of constant negative curvature. Such surfaces are represented by a tessellation of the hyperbolic plane by regular polygons. The Higgs field is given implicitly in terms of Schwarz triangle functions and analytic solutions are available for certain highly symmetric configurations.

The heat kernel expansion on even-dimensional hyperbolic spaces is asymptotic at both short and long times, with interestingly different Borel properties for these short and long time expansions. Resummations in terms of incomplete gamma functions provide accurate extrapolations and analytic continuations, relating the heat kernel to the Schrodinger kernel, and the heat kernel on hyperbolic space to the heat kernel on spheres. For the diagonal heat kernel there is also a duality between short and long times which mixes the scalar and spinor heat kernels.
We apply the methods of homology and K-theory for branes wrapping spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds. In addition, we discuss the algebraic K-theory of any discrete co-compact Lie group in terms of appropriate homology and Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence with its non-trivial lift to K-homology. We emphasize the fact that the physical D-branes properties are completely transparent within the mathematical framework of K-theory. We derive criteria for D-brane stability in the case of strongly virtually negatively curved groups. We show that branes wrapping spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds carry charge structure and change the additive structural properties in K-homology.
Using methods of formal geometry, the Poisson sigma model on a closed surface is studied in perturbation theory. The effective action, as a function on vacua, is shown to have no quantum corrections if the surface is a torus or if the Poisson structure is regular and unimodular (e.g., symplectic). In the case of a Kahler structure or of a trivial Poisson structure, the partition function on the torus is shown to be the Euler characteristic of the target; some evidence is given for this to happen more generally. The methods of formal geometry introduced in this paper might be applicable to other sigma models, at least of the AKSZ type.
We compute the ${cal N}=2$ supersymmetric partition function of a gauge theory on a four-dimensional compact toric manifold via equivariant localization. The result is given by a piecewise constant function of the Kahler form with jumps along the walls where the gauge symmetry gets enhanced. The partition function on such manifolds is written as a sum over the residues of a product of partition functions on $mathbb{C}^2$. The evaluation of these residues is greatly simplified by using an abstruse duality that relates the residues at the poles of the one-loop and instanton parts of the $mathbb{C}^2$ partition function. As particular cases, our formulae compute the $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ {it equivariant} Donaldson invariants of $mathbb{P}^2$ and $mathbb{F}_n$ and in the non-equivariant limit reproduce the results obtained via wall-crossing and blow up methods in the $SU(2)$ case. Finally, we show that the $U(1)$ self-dual connections induce an anomalous dependence on the gauge coupling, which turns out to satisfy a $mathcal{N}=2$ analog of the $mathcal{N}=4$ holomorphic anomaly equations.
We obtain classical string solutions on RxS^2 by applying the dressing method on string solutions with elliptic Pohlmeyer counterparts. This is realized through the use of the simplest possible dressing factor, which possesses just a pair of poles lying on the unit circle. The latter is equivalent to the action of a single Backlund transformation on the corresponding sine-Gordon solutions. The obtained dressed elliptic strings present an interesting bifurcation of their qualitative characteristics at a specific value of a modulus of the seed solutions. Finally, an interesting generic feature of the dressed strings, which originates from the form of the simplest dressing factor and not from the specific seed solution, is the fact that they can be considered as drawn by an epicycle of constant radius whose center is running on the seed solution. The radius of the epicycle is directly related to the location of the poles of the dressing factor.
