We propose a novel approach for optical flow estimation , targeted at large displacements with significant oc-clusions. It consists of two steps: i) dense matching by edge-preserving interpolation from a sparse set of matches; ii) variational energy minimization initialized with the dense matches. The sparse-to-dense interpolation relies on an appropriate choice of the distance, namely an edge-aware geodesic distance. This distance is tailored to handle occlusions and motion boundaries -- two common and difficult issues for optical flow computation. We also propose an approximation scheme for the geodesic distance to allow fast computation without loss of performance. Subsequent to the dense interpolation step, standard one-level variational energy minimization is carried out on the dense matches to obtain the final flow estimation. The proposed approach, called Edge-Preserving Interpolation of Correspondences (EpicFlow) is fast and robust to large displacements. It significantly outperforms the state of the art on MPI-Sintel and performs on par on Kitti and Middlebury.
In this paper, we address the problem of building dense correspondences between human images under arbitrary camera viewpoints and body poses. Prior art either assumes small motion between frames or relies on local descriptors, which cannot handle large motion or visually ambiguous body parts, e.g., left vs. right hand. In contrast, we propose a deep learning framework that maps each pixel to a feature space, where the feature distances reflect the geodesic distances among pixels as if they were projected onto the surface of a 3D human scan. To this end, we introduce novel loss functions to push features apart according to their geodesic distances on the surface. Without any semantic annotation, the proposed embeddings automatically learn to differentiate visually similar parts and align different subjects into an unified feature space. Extensive experiments show that the learned embeddings can produce accurate correspondences between images with remarkable generalization capabilities on both intra and inter subjects.
Video frame interpolation can up-convert the frame rate and enhance the video quality. In recent years, although the interpolation performance has achieved great success, image blur usually occurs at the object boundaries owing to the large motion. It has been a long-standing problem, and has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we propose to reduce the image blur and get the clear shape of objects by preserving the edges in the interpolated frames. To this end, the proposed Edge-Aware Network (EA-Net) integrates the edge information into the frame interpolation task. It follows an end-to-end architecture and can be separated into two stages, emph{i.e.}, edge-guided flow estimation and edge-protected frame synthesis. Specifically, in the flow estimation stage, three edge-aware mechanisms are developed to emphasize the frame edges in estimating flow maps, so that the edge-maps are taken as the auxiliary information to provide more guidance to boost the flow accuracy. In the frame synthesis stage, the flow refinement module is designed to refine the flow map, and the attention module is carried out to adaptively focus on the bidirectional flow maps when synthesizing the intermediate frames. Furthermore, the frame and edge discriminators are adopted to conduct the adversarial training strategy, so as to enhance the reality and clarity of synthesized frames. Experiments on three benchmarks, including Vimeo90k, UCF101 for single-frame interpolation and Adobe240-fps for multi-frame interpolation, have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed EA-Net for the video frame interpolation task.
Feature pyramids and iterative refinement have recently led to great progress in optical flow estimation. However, downsampling in feature pyramids can cause blending of foreground objects with the background, which will mislead subsequent decisions in the iterative processing. The results are missing details especially in the flow of thin and of small structures. We propose a novel Residual Feature Pyramid Module (RFPM) which retains important details in the feature map without changing the overall iterative refinement design of the optical flow estimation. RFPM incorporates a residual structure between multiple feature pyramids into a downsampling module that corrects the blending of objects across boundaries. We demonstrate how to integrate our module with two state-of-the-art iterative refinement architectures. Results show that our RFPM visibly reduces flow errors and improves state-of-art performance in the clean pass of Sintel, and is one of the top-performing methods in KITTI. According to the particular modular structure of RFPM, we introduce a special transfer learning approach that can dramatically decrease the training time compared to a typical full optical flow training schedule on multiple datasets.
Applications of satellite data in areas such as weather tracking and modeling, ecosystem monitoring, wildfire detection, and land-cover change are heavily dependent on the trade-offs to spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions of observations. In weather tracking, high-frequency temporal observations are critical and used to improve forecasts, study severe events, and extract atmospheric motion, among others. However, while the current generation of geostationary satellites have hemispheric coverage at 10-15 minute intervals, higher temporal frequency observations are ideal for studying mesoscale severe weather events. In this work, we apply a task specific optical flow approach to temporal up-sampling using deep convolutional neural networks. We apply this technique to 16-bands of GOES-R/Advanced Baseline Imager mesoscale dataset to temporally enhance full disk hemispheric snapshots of different spatial resolutions from 15 minutes to 1 minute. Experiments show the effectiveness of task specific optical flow and multi-scale blocks for interpolating high-frequency severe weather events relative to bilinear and global optical flow baselines. Lastly, we demonstrate strong performance in capturing variability during a convective precipitation events.
Many interpolation methods have been developed for high visual quality, but fail for inability to preserve image structures. Edges carry heavy structural information for detection, determination and classification. Edge-adaptive interpolation approaches become a center of focus. In this paper, performance of four edge-directed interpolation methods comparing with two traditional methods is evaluated on two groups of images. These methods include new edge-directed interpolation (NEDI), edge-guided image interpolation (EGII), iterative curvature-based interpolation (ICBI), directional cubic convolution interpolation (DCCI) and two traditional approaches, bi-linear and bi-cubic. Meanwhile, no parameters are mentioned to measure edge-preserving ability of edge-adaptive interpolation approaches and we proposed two. One evaluates accuracy and the other measures robustness of edge-preservation ability. Performance evaluation is based on six parameters. Objective assessment and visual analysis are illustrated and conclusions are drawn from theoretical backgrounds and practical results.
