We consider the Laplacian with a delta potential (a point scatterer) on an irrational torus, where the square of the side ratio is diophantine. The eigenfunctions fall into two classes ---old eigenfunctions (75%) of the Laplacian which vanish at the support of the delta potential, and therefore are not affected, and new eigenfunctions (25%) which are affected, and as a result feature a logarithmic singularity at the location of the delta potential. Within a full density subsequence of the new eigenfunctions we determine all semiclassical measures in the weak coupling regime and show that they are localized along 4 wave vectors in momentum space --- we therefore prove the existence of so-called superscars as predicted by Bogomolny and Schmit. This result contrasts the phase space equidistribution which is observed for a full density subset of the new eigenfunctions of a point scatterer on a rational torus. Further, in the strong coupling limit we show that a weaker form of localization holds for a positive proportion of the new eigenvalues; in particular quantum ergodicity does not hold. We also explain how our results can be modified for rectangles with Dirichlet boundary conditions with a point scatterer in the interior. In this case our results extend previous work of Keating, Marklof and Winn who proved the existence of localized semiclassical measures under a non-clustering condition on the spectrum of the Laplacian.
We show that for a fixed curve $K$ and for a family of variables curves $L$, the number of $n$-Poncelet pairs is $frac{e (n)}{2}$, where $e(n)$ is the number of natural numbers $m$ smaller than $n$ and which satisfies mcd $ (m,n)=1$. The curvee $K$ do not have to be part of the family. In order to show this result we consider an associated billiard transformation and a twist map which preserves area. We use Aubry-Mather theory and the rotation number of invariant curves to obtain our main result. In the last section we estimate the derivative of the rotation number of a general twist map using some properties of the continued fraction expansion .
Uniqueness and reconstruction in the three-dimensional Calderon inverse conductivity problem can be reduced to the study of the inverse boundary problem for Schrodinger operators $-Delta +q $. We study the Born approximation of $q$ in the ball, which amounts to studying the linearization of the inverse problem. We first analyze this approximation for real and radial potentials in any dimension. We show that this approximation is well-defined and obtain a closed formula that involves the spectrum of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to $-Delta + q$. We then turn to general real and essentially bounded potentials in three dimensions and introduce the notion of averaged Born approximation, which captures the invariance properties of the exact inverse problem. We obtain explicit formulas for the averaged Born approximation in terms of the matrix elements of the Dirichlet to Neumann map in the basis spherical harmonics. Motivated by these formulas we also study the high-energy behaviour of the matrix elements of the Dirichlet to Neumann map.
We provide explicit formulas for the Green function of an elliptic PDE in the infinite strip and the half-plane. They are expressed in elementary and special functions. Proofs of uniqueness and existence are also given.
We analyze the analytic Landau damping problem for the Vlasov-HMF equation, by fixing the asymptotic behavior of the solution. We use a new method for this scattering problem, closer to the one used for the Cauchy problem. In this way we are able to compare the two results, emphasizing the different influence of the plasma echoes in the two approaches. In particular, we prove a non-perturbative result for the scattering problem.
In this paper we prove the existence of vortices, namely standing waves with non null angular momentum, for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in dimension $Ngeq 3$. We show with variational methods that the existence of these kind of solutions, that we have called emph{hylomorphic vortices}, depends on a suitable energy-charge ratio. Our variational approach turns out to be useful for numerical investigations as well. In particular, some results in dimension N=2 are reported, namely exemplificative vortex profiles by varying charge and angular momentum, together with relevant trends for vortex frequency and energy-charge ratio. The stability problem for hylomorphic vortices is also addressed. In the absence of conclusive analytical results, vortex evolution is numerically investigated: the obtained results suggest that, contrarily to solitons with null angular momentum, vortex are unstable.
