We present a full microscopic theory based on the SU(2) covariant formulation of the quasiclassical formalism to describe the Josephson current through an extended superconductor-normal metal- superconductor (SNS) diffusive junction with an intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the presence of a spin-splitting field h. We demonstrate that the ground state of the junction corresponds to a finite intrinsic phase difference 0 < {phi}0 < 2{pi} between the superconductor electrodes provided that both, h and the SOC-induced SU(2) Lorentz force are finite. In the particular case of a Rashba SOC we present analytic and numerical results for {phi}0 as a function of the strengths of the spin fields, the length of the junction, the temperature and the properties of SN interfaces.
The transmission of Cooper pairs between two weakly coupled superconductors produces a superfluid current and a phase difference; the celebrated Josephson effect. Because of time-reversal and parity symmetries, there is no Josephson current without a phase difference between two superconductors. Reciprocally, when those two symmetries are broken, an anomalous supercurrent can exist in the absence of phase bias or, equivalently, an anomalous phase shift $varphi_0$ can exist in the absence of a superfluid current. We report on the observation of an anomalous phase shift $varphi_0$ in hybrid Josephson junctions fabricated with the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ submitted to an in-plane magnetic field. This anomalous phase shift $varphi_0$ is observed directly through measurements of the current-phase relationship in a Josephson interferometer. This result provides a direct measurement of the spin-orbit coupling strength and open new possibilities for phase-controlled Josephson devices made from materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.
We present the results of theoretical study of Current-Phase Relations (CPR) in Josephson junctions of SIsFS type, where S is a bulk superconductor and IsF is a complex weak link consisting of a superconducting film s, a metallic ferromagnet F and an insulating barrier I. We calculate the relationship between Josephson current and phase difference. At temperatures close to critical, calculations are performed analytically in the frame of the Ginsburg-Landau equations. At low temperatures numerical method is developed to solve selfconsistently the Usadel equations in the structure. We demonstrate that SIsFS junctions have several distinct regimes of supercurrent transport and we examine spatial distributions of the pair potential across the structure in different regimes. We study the crossover between these regimes which is caused by shifting the location of a weak link from the tunnel barrier I to the F-layer. We show that strong deviations of the CPR from sinusoidal shape occur even in a vicinity of Tc, and these deviations are strongest in the crossover regime. We demonstrate the existence of temperature-induced crossover between 0 and pi states in the contact and show that smoothness of this transition strongly depends on the CPR shape.
Graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) has proved to be highly successful in Hall conductance quantization for its homogeneity at the centimetre scale. Robust Josephson coupling has been measured in co-planar diffusive Al/monololayer graphene/Al junctions. Graphene on SiC substrates is a concrete candidate to provide scalability of hybrid Josephson graphene/superconductor devices, giving also promise of ballistic propagation.
We study Andreev reflection and Andreev levels $varepsilon$ in Zeeman-split superconductor/Rashba wire/Zeeman-split superconductor junctions by solving the Bogoliubov de-Gennes equation. We theoretically demonstrate that the Andreev levels $varepsilon$ can be controlled by tuning either the strength of Rashba spin-orbit interaction or the relative direction of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and the Zeeman field. In particular, it is found that the magnitude of the band splitting is tunable by the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and the rength of the wire, which can be interpreted by a spin precession in the Rashba wire. We also find that if the Zeeman field in the superconductor has the component parallel to the direction of the junction, the $varepsilon$-$phi$ curve becomes asymmetric with respect to the superconducting phase difference $phi$. Whereas the Andreev reflection processes associated with each pseudospin band are sensitive to the relative orientation of the spin-orbit field and the exchange field, the total electric conductance interestingly remains invariant.
We consider a planar SIS-type Josephson junction between diffusive superconductors (S) through an insulating tunnel interface (I). We construct fully self-consistent perturbation theory with respect to the interface conductance. As a result, we find correction to the first Josephson harmonic and calculate the second Josephson harmonic. At arbitrary temperatures, we correct previous results for the nonsinusoidal current-phase relation in Josephson tunnel junctions, which were obtained with the help of conjectured form of solution. Our perturbation theory also describes the difference between the phases of the order parameter and of the anomalous Green functions.
