We study the stability of traveling waves of nonlinear Schrodinger equation with nonzero condition at infinity obtained via a constrained variational approach. Two important physical models are Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation and cubic-quintic equation. First, under a non-degeneracy condition we prove a sharp instability criterion for 3D traveling waves of (GP), which had been conjectured in the physical literature. This result is also extended for general nonlinearity and higher dimensions, including 4D (GP) and 3D cubic-quintic equations. Second, for cubic-quintic type sub-critical or critical nonlinearity, we construct slow traveling waves and prove their nonlinear instability in any dimension. For traveling waves without vortices (i.e. nonvanishing) of general nonlinearity in any dimension, we find the sharp condition for linear instability. Third, we prove that any 2D traveling wave of (GP) is transversally unstable and find the sharp interval of unstable transversal wave numbers. Near unstable traveling waves of above cases, we construct unstable and stable invariant manifolds.

The long-time asymptotic behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation on the line with symmetric nonzero boundary conditions at infinity is characterized by using the recently developed inverse scattering transform (IST) for such problems and by employing the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. First, the IST is formulated over a single sheet of the complex plane without introducing a uniformization variable. The solution of the focusing NLS equation with nonzero boundary conditions is thus associated with a suitable matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem whose jumps grow exponentially with time for certain portions of the continuous spectrum. This growth is the signature of the well-known modulational instability within the context of the IST. This growth is then removed by suitable deformations of the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the complex spectral plane. Asymptotically in time, the $xt$-plane is found to decompose into two types of regions: a left far-field region and a right far-field region, where the solution equals the condition at infinity to leading order up to a phase shift, and a central region in which the asymptotic behavior is described by slowly modulated periodic oscillations. In the latter region, it is also shown that the modulus of the leading order solution, which is initially obtained in the form of a ratio of Jacobi theta functions, eventually reduces to the well-known elliptic solution of the focusing NLS equation. These results provide the first characterization of the long-time behavior of generic perturbations of a constant background in a modulationally unstable medium.
In this paper, we characterize a family of solitary waves for NLS with derivative (DNLS) by the structue analysis and the variational argument. Since (DNLS) doesnt enjoy the Galilean invariance any more, the structure analysis here is closely related with the nontrivial momentum and shows the equivalence of nontrivial solutions between the quasilinear and the semilinear equations. Firstly, for the subcritical parameters $4omega>c^2$ and the critical parameters $4omega=c^2, c>0$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solitary waves for (DNLS), up to the phase rotation and spatial translation symmetries. Secondly, for the critical parameters $4omega=c^2, cleq 0$ and the supercritical parameters $4omega<c^2$, there is no nontrivial solitary wave for (DNLS). At last, we make use of the invariant sets, which is related to the variational characterization of the solitary wave, to obtain the global existence of solution for (DNLS) with initial data in the invariant set $mathcal{K}^+_{omega,c}subseteq H^1(R)$, with $4omega=c^2, c>0$ or $4omega>c^2$. On one hand, different with the scattering result for the $L^2$-critical NLS in cite{Dod:NLS_sct}, the scattering result of (DNLS) doesnt hold for initial data in $mathcal{K}^+_{omega,c}$ because of the existence of infinity many small solitary/traveling waves in $mathcal{K}^+_{omega,c},$ with $4omega=c^2, c>0$ or $4omega>c^2$. On the other hand, our global result improves the global result in cite{Wu-DNLS, Wu-DNLS2} (see Corollary ref{cor:gwp}).
We study traveling wave solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation. In particular, we show how to obtain global, bounded, weak traveling wave solutions from local, classical ones. The resulting waves consist of monotone and constant segments, glued together at points where at least one one-sided derivative is unbounded. Applying the method of proof to the Camassa--Holm equation, we recover some well-known results on its traveling wave solutions.

We study the instability of standing-wave solutions $e^{iomega t}phi_{omega}(x)$ to the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schr{o}dinger equation $$iphi_t=-trianglephi+|x|^2phi-|x|^b|phi|^{p-1}phi, qquad inmathbb{R}^N, $$ where $ b > 0 $ and $ phi_{omega} $ is a ground-state solution. The results of the instability of standing-wave solutions reveal a balance between the frequency $omega $ of wave and the power of nonlinearity $p $ for any fixed $ b > 0. $
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Using the DBAR generalization of the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou we derive the leading order approximation to the solution of the GP in the solitonic region of space time $|x| < 2t$ for large times and provide bounds for the error which decay as $t to infty$ for a general class of initial data whose difference from the non-vanishing background possesss a fixed number of finite moments and derivatives. Using properties of the scattering map for (GP) we derive as a corollary an asymptotic stability result for initial data which are sufficiently close to the N-dark soliton solutions of (GP).
