We present an efficient algorithm to compute the Hasse-Witt matrix of a hyperelliptic curve C/Q modulo all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N, based on the average polynomial-time algorithm recently introduced by Harvey. An implementation for hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 and 3 is more than an order of magnitude faster than alternative methods for N = 2^26.
We present an algorithm that computes the Hasse-Witt matrix of given hyperelliptic curve over Q at all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N. It is simpler and faster than the previous algorithm developed by the authors.
We discuss the computation of coefficients of the L-series associated to a hyperelliptic curve over Q of genus at most 3, using point counting, generic group algorithms, and p-adic methods.
We describe the practical implementation of an average polynomial-time algorithm for counting points on superelliptic curves defined over $mathbb Q$ that is substantially faster than previous approaches. Our algorithm takes as input a superelliptic curves $y^m=f(x)$ with $mge 2$ and $fin mathbb Z[x]$ any squarefree polynomial of degree $dge 3$, along with a positive integer $N$. It can compute $#X(mathbb F_p)$ for all $ple N$ not dividing $mmathrm{lc}(f)mathrm{disc}(f)$ in time $O(md^3 Nlog^3 Nloglog N)$. It achieves this by computing the trace of the Cartier--Manin matrix of reductions of $X$. We can also compute the Cartier--Manin matrix itself, which determines the $p$-rank of the Jacobian of $X$ and the numerator of its zeta function modulo~$p$.
We prove general Dwork-type congruences for Hasse--Witt matrices attached to tuples of Laurent polynomials. We apply this result to establishing arithmetic and $p$-adic analytic properties of functions originating from polynomial solutions modulo $p^s$ of Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations, solutions which come as coefficients of master polynomials and whose coefficients are integers. As an application we show that the $p$-adic KZ connection associated with the family of hyperelliptic curves $y^2=(t-z_1)dots (t-z_{2g+1})$ has an invariant subbundle of rank $g$. Notice that the corresponding complex KZ connection has no nontrivial subbundles due to the irreducibility of its monodromy representation.
We analyze the distribution of unitarized L-polynomials Lp(T) (as p varies) obtained from a hyperelliptic curve of genus g <= 3 defined over Q. In the generic case, we find experimental agreement with a predicted correspondence (based on the Katz-Sarnak random matrix model) between the distributions of Lp(T) and of characteristic polynomials of random matrices in the compact Lie group USp(2g). We then formulate an analogue of the Sato-Tate conjecture for curves of genus 2, in which the generic distribution is augmented by 22 exceptional distributions, each corresponding to a compact subgroup of USp(4). In every case, we exhibit a curve closely matching the proposed distribution, and can find no curves unaccounted for by our classification.
