In this work we study the two and three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with an imaginary magnetic field $itheta$ at $theta=pi$. In order to perform numerical simulations of the system we introduce a new geometric algorithm not affected by the sign problem. Our results for the $2D$ model are in agreement with the analytical solutions. We also present new results for the $3D$ model which are qualitatively in agreement with mean-field predictions.
We study 2d U(1) gauge Higgs systems with a $theta$-term. For properly discretizing the topological charge as an integer we introduce a mixed group- and algebra-valued discretization (MGA scheme) for the gauge fields, such that the charge conjugation symmetry at $theta = pi$ is implemented exactly. The complex action problem from the $theta$-term is overcome by exactly mapping the partition sum to a worldline/worldsheet representation. Using Monte Carlo simulation of the worldline/worldsheet representation we study the system at $theta = pi$ and show that as a function of the mass parameter the system undergoes a phase transition. Determining the critical exponents from a finite size scaling analysis we show that the transition is in the 2d Ising universality class. We furthermore study the U(1) gauge Higgs systems at $theta = pi$ also with charge 2 matter fields, where an additional $Z_2$ symmetry is expected to alter the phase structure. Our results indicate that for charge 2 a true phase transition is absent and only a rapid crossover separates the large and small mass regions.
We simulate the 2d U(1) gauge Higgs model on the lattice with a topological angle $theta$. The corresponding complex action problem is overcome by using a dual representation based on the Villain action appropriately endowed with a $theta$-term. The Villain action is interpreted as a non-compact gauge theory whose center symmetry is gauged and has the advantage that the topological term is correctly quantized so that $2pi$ periodicity in $theta$ is intact. Because of this the $theta = pi$ theory has an exact $Z_2$ charge-conjugation symmetry $C$, which is spontaneously broken when the mass-squared of the scalars is large and positive. Lowering the mass squared the symmetry becomes restored in a second order phase transition. Simulating the system at $theta = pi$ in its dual form we determine the corresponding critical endpoint as a function of the mass parameter. Using a finite size scaling analysis we determine the critical exponents and show that the transition is in the 2d Ising universality class, as expected.
Ising Monte Carlo simulations of the random-field Ising system Fe(0.80)Zn(0.20)F2 are presented for H=10T. The specific heat critical behavior is consistent with alpha approximately 0 and the staggered magnetization with beta approximately 0.25 +- 0.03.
We numerically study the phase structure of the CP(1) model in the presence of a topological $theta$-term, a regime afflicted by the sign problem for conventional lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Using a bond-weighted Tensor Renormalization Group method, we compute the free energy for inverse couplings ranging from $0leq beta leq 1.1$ and find a CP-violating, first-order phase transition at $theta=pi$. In contrast to previous findings, our numerical results provide no evidence for a critical coupling $beta_c<1.1$ above which a second-order phase transition emerges at $theta=pi$ and/or the first-order transition line bifurcates at $theta eqpi$. If such a critical coupling exists, as suggested by Haldanes conjecture, our study indicates that is larger than $beta_c>1.1$.
By tempered Monte Carlo simulations, we study 2D site-diluted dipolar Ising systems. Dipoles are randomly placed on a fraction x of all L^2 sites in a square lattice, and point along a common crystalline axis. For x_c< x<=1, where x_c = 0.79(5), we find an antiferromagnetic phase below a temperature which vanishes as x approaches x_c from above. At lower values of x, we study (i) distributions of the spin--glass (SG) overlap q, (ii) their relative mean square deviation Delta_q^2 and kurtosis and (iii) xi_L/L, where xi_L is a SG correlation length. From their variation with temperature and system size, we find that the paramagnetic phase covers the entire T>0 range. Our results enable us to obtain an estimate of the critical exponent associated to the correlation length at T=0, 1/nu=0.35(10).
