Specific heat of dipolar glasses does not obey Debye law. It is of interest to know if the non-Debye specific heat can be accounted for in terms of Schottky-type specific heat arising from rotational tunneling states of the dipoles. This paper deals with rotational tunneling spectra of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions and the non-Debye specific heat of mixed salts (e.g. (NH$_{4})_{x}$Rb$_{1-x}$Br) of ammonium and alkali halides which are known to exhibit dipolar glass phase. We have measured specific heat of above mixed salts at low temperatures (1.5 K $< T <$ 15 K). It is seen that while the specific heat of pure salts obeys Debye law, the specific heat of mixed salts does not obey Debye law. We have studied the effect of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion concentration, first neighbor environment of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion and the lattice strain field on the non-Debye specific heat by carrying out measurements on suitably chosen mixed salts. Independent of above, we have measured the rotational tunneling spectra, $f(omega $), of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions in above salts using technique of neutron incoherent inelastic scattering. The above studies show that both the non-Debye specific heat and the tunneling spectra of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions depend on the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion concentration, first neighbor environment of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions and the lattice strain field. We have further shown that the temperature dependence of the measured specific heat can be explained for all the samples in terms of a model that takes account of contributions to the specific heat from the Debye phonons and the rotational tunneling states of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first study where it is shown that measured specific heat of (NH$_{4})_{x}$Rb$_{1-x}$Br can be quantitatively explained in terms of an experimentally measured rotational tunneling spectra $f(omega $) of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions.

Chemical polarity governs various mechanical, chemical and thermodynamic properties of dielectrics. Polar liquids have been amply studied, yet the basic mechanisms underpinning their dielectric properties remain not fully understood, as standard models following Debyes phenomenological approach do not account for quantum effects and cannot aptly reproduce the full dc-up-to-THz spectral range. Here, using the illustrative case of monohydric alcohols, we show that deep tunneling and the consequent intermolecular separation of excess protons and proton-holes in the polar liquids govern their static and dynamic dielectric properties on the same footing. We performed systematic ultrabroadband (0-10 THz) spectroscopy experiments with monohydric alcohols of different (0.4-1.6 nm) molecular lengths, and show that the finite lifetime of molecular species, and the proton-hole correlation length are the two principle parameters responsible for the dielectric response of all the studied alcohols across the entire frequency range. Our results demonstrate that a quantum non-rotational intermolecular mechanism drives the polarization in alcohols while the rotational mechanism of molecular polarization plays a secondary role, manifesting itself in the sub-terahertz region only.

By generalizing the traditional concept of heat dQ and work dW to also include their time-dependent irreversible components d_{i}Q and d_{i}W allows us to express them in terms of the instantaneous internal temperature T(t) and pressure P(t), whereas the conventional form uses the constant values T_{0} and P_{0} of the medium. This results in an extremely useful formulation of non-equilibrium thermodynamics so that the first law turns into the Gibbs fundamental relation and the Clausius inequality becomes an equality ointdQ(t)/T(t)equiv0 in all cases, a quite remarkable but unexpected result. We determine the irreversible components d_{i}Qequivd_{i}W and discuss how they can be determined to obtain the generalized dW(t) and dQ(t).
We study magnetic properties of spin glass SG systems under a random field (RF), beased on the suggestion that RFs can be induced by a weak transverse field in the compound LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$. We consider a cluster spin model that allows long-range disordered interactions among clusters and short-range interactions inside the clusters, besides a local RF for each spin following a Gaussian distribution with standard deviation $Delta$. We adopt the one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) approach to get an exactly solvable single-cluster problem. We discuss the behavior of order parameters, specific heat $C_{m}$, nonlinear susceptibility $chi_3$ and phase diagrams for different disorder configurations. In the absence of RF, the $chi_3$ exhibits a divergence at $T_f$, while the $C_{m}$ shows a broad maximum at a temperature $T^{**}$ around 30$%$ above $T_f$, as expected for conventional SG systems. The presence of RF changes this scenario. The $C_{m}$ still shows the maximum at $T^{**}$ that is weakly dependent on $Delta$. However, the $T_f$ is displaced to lower temperatures, enhancing considerable the ration $T^{**}/T_f$. Furthermore, the divergence in $chi_3$ is replaced by a rounded maximum at a temperature $T^{*}$, which becomes increasingly higher than $T_f$ as $Delta$ enhances. As a consequence, the paramagnetic phase is unfolded in three regions: (i) a conventional paramagnetism ($T>T^{**}$; (ii) a region with formation of short-range order with frozen spins ($T^{*}<T<T^{**}$); (iii) a region with slow growth of free-energy barriers slowing down the spin dynamics before the SG transition ($T_f<T<T^{*}$) suggesting an intermediate Griffiths phase before the SG state. Our results reproduce qualitatively some findings of LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ as the rounded maximum of $chi_3$ behavior triggered by RF.
We study dipolarly coupled three dimensional spin systems in both the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles by introducing appropriate numerical methods to determine the microcanonical temperature and by realizing a canonical model of heat bath. In the microcanonical ensemble, we show the existence of a branch of stable antiferromagnetic states in the low energy region. Other metastable ferromagnetic states exist in this region: by externally perturbing them, an effective negative specific heat is obtained. In the canonical ensemble, for low temperatures, the same metastable states are unstable and reach a new branch of more robust metastable states which is distinct from the stable one. Our statistical physics approach allows us to put some order in the complex structure of stable and metastable states of dipolar systems.

In this work we investigate the theory for three different uni-directional population transfer schemes in trapped multilevel systems which can be utilized to cool molecular ions. The approach we use exploits the laser-induced coupling between the internal and motional degrees of freedom so that the internal state of a molecule can be mapped onto the motion of that molecule in an external trapping potential. By sympathetically cooling the translational motion back into its ground state the mapping process can be employed as part of a cooling scheme for molecular rotational levels. This step is achieved through a common mode involving a laser-cooled atom trapped alongside the molecule. For the coherent mapping we will focus on adiabatic passage techniques which may be expected to provide robust and efficient population transfers. By applying far-detuned chirped adiabatic rapid passage pulses we are able to achieve an efficiency of better than 98% for realistic parameters and including spontaneous emission. Even though our main focus is on cooling molecular states, the analysis of the different adiabatic methods has general features which can be applied to atomic systems.
