We present new constructions of codes for asymmetric channels for both binary and nonbinary alphabets, based on methods of generalized code concatenation. For the binary asymmetric channel, our methods construct nonlinear single-error-correcting codes from ternary outer codes. We show that some of the Varshamov-Tenengolts-Constantin-Rao codes, a class of binary nonlinear codes for this channel, have a nice structure when viewed as ternary codes. In many cases, our ternary construction yields even better codes. For the nonbinary asymmetric channel, our methods construct linear codes for many lengths and distances which are superior to the linear codes of the same length capable of correcting the same number of symmetric errors. In the binary case, Varshamov has shown that almost all good linear codes for the asymmetric channel are also good for the symmetric channel. Our results indicate that Varshamovs argument does not extend to the nonbinary case, i.e., one can find better linear codes for asymmetric channels than for symmetric ones.
The parameters of MDS self-dual codes are completely determined by the code length. In this paper, we utilize generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and extended GRS codes to construct MDS self-dual (self-orthogonal) codes and MDS almost self-dual codes over. The main idea of our constructions is to choose suitable evaluation points such that the corresponding (extended) GRS codes are Euclidean self-dual (self-orthogonal). The evaluation sets are consists of two subsets which satisfy some certain conditions and the length of these codes can be expressed as a linear combination of two factors of q-1. Four families of MDS self-dual codes, two families of MDS self-orthogonal codes and two families of MDS almost self-dual codes are obtained and they have new parameters.
It is an important task to construct quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes with good parameters. In the present paper, we provide six new classes of q-ary quantum MDS codes by using generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and Hermitian construction. The minimum distances of our quantum MDS codes can be larger than q/2+1 Three of these six classes of quantum MDS codes have longer lengths than the ones constructed in [1] and [2], hence some of their results can be easily derived from ours via the propagation rule. Moreover, some known quantum MDS codes of specific lengths can be seen as special cases of ours and the minimum distances of some known quantum MDS codes are also improved as well.
Zero-error single-channel source coding has been studied extensively over the past decades. Its natural multi-channel generalization is however not well investigated. While the special case with multiple symmetric-alphabet channels was studied a decade ago, codes in such setting have no advantage over single-channel codes in data compression, making them worthless in most applications. With essentially no development since the last decade, in this paper, we break the stalemate by showing that it is possible to beat single-channel source codes in terms of compression assuming asymmetric-alphabet channels. We present the multi-channel analog of several classical results in single-channel source coding, such as that a multi-channel Huffman code is an optimal tree-decodable code. We also show some evidences that finding an efficient construction of multi-channel Huffman codes may be hard. Nevertheless, we propose a suboptimal code construction whose redundancy is guaranteed to be no larger than that of an optimal single-channel source code.
Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are optimal where the minimum distance cannot be improved for a given length and code size. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields were introduced in 2017, which are generalization of Reed-Solomon codes. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes can be applied in cryptography which prefer the codes with large minimum distance. MDS codes can be constructed from twisted Reed-Solomon codes, and most of them are not equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, we first generalize twisted Reed-Solomon codes to generalized twisted Reed-Solomon codes, then we give some new explicit constructions of MDS (generalized) twisted Reed-Solomon codes. In some cases, our constructions can get MDS codes with the length longer than the constructions of previous works. Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their duals trivially. LCD codes can be applied in cryptography. This application of LCD codes renewed the interest in the construction of LCD codes having a large minimum distance. We also provide new constructions of LCD MDS codes from generalized twisted Reed-Solomon codes.
As an important coding scheme in modern distributed storage systems, locally repairable codes (LRCs) have attracted a lot of attentions from perspectives of both practical applications and theoretical research. As a major topic in the research of LRCs, bounds and constructions of the corresponding optimal codes are of particular concerns. In this work, codes with $(r,delta)$-locality which have optimal minimal distance w.r.t. the bound given by Prakash et al. cite{Prakash2012Optimal} are considered. Through parity check matrix approach, constructions of both optimal $(r,delta)$-LRCs with all symbol locality ($(r,delta)_a$-LRCs) and optimal $(r,delta)$-LRCs with information locality ($(r,delta)_i$-LRCs) are provided. As a generalization of a work of Xing and Yuan cite{XY19}, these constructions are built on a connection between sparse hypergraphs and optimal $(r,delta)$-LRCs. With the help of constructions of large sparse hypergraphs, the length of codes constructed can be super-linear in the alphabet size. This improves upon previous constructions when the minimal distance of the code is at least $3delta+1$. As two applications, optimal H-LRCs with super-linear length and GSD codes with unbounded length are also constructed.
