The $N$-representability problem is the problem of determining whether or not there exists $N$-particle states with some prescribed property. Here we report an affirmative solution to the fermion $N$-representability problem when both the density and paramagnetic current density are prescribed. This problem arises in current-density functional theory and is a generalization of the well-studied corresponding problem (only the density prescribed) in density functional theory. Given any density and paramagnetic current density satisfying a minimal regularity condition (essentially that a von Weizacker-like the canonical kinetic energy density is locally integrable), we prove that there exist a corresponding $N$-particle state. We prove this by constructing an explicit one-particle reduced density matrix in the form of a position-space kernel, i.e. a function of two continuous position variables. In order to make minimal assumptions, we also address mathematical subtleties regarding the diagonal of, and how to rigorously extract paramagnetic current densities from, one-particle reduced density matrices in kernel form.
A Lagrangian formulation for the constrained search for the $N$-representable one-particle density matrix based on the McWeeny idempotency error minimization is proposed, which converges systematically to the ground state. A closed form of the canonical purification is derived for which no a posteriori adjustement on the trace of the density matrix is needed. The relationship with comparable methods are discussed, showing their possible generalization through the hole-particle duality. The appealing simplicity of this self-consistent recursion relation along with its low computational complexity could prove useful as an alternative to diagonalization in solving dense and sparse matrix eigenvalue problems.
In random walks, the path representation of the Greens function is an infinite sum over the length of path probability density functions (PDFs). Here we derive and solve, in Laplace space, the recursion relation for the n order path PDF for any arbitrarily inhomogeneous semi-Markovian random walk in a one-dimensional (1D) chain of L states. The recursion relation relates the n order path PDF to L/2 (round towards zero for an odd L) shorter path PDFs, and has n independent coefficients that obey a universal formula. The z transform of the recursion relation straightforwardly gives the generating function for path PDFs, from which we obtain the Greens function of the random walk, and derive an explicit expression for any path PDF of the random walk. These expressions give the most detailed description of arbitrarily inhomogeneous semi-Markovian random walks in 1D.
We investigate the level density for several ensembles of positive random matrices of a Wishart--like structure, $W=XX^{dagger}$, where $X$ stands for a nonhermitian random matrix. In particular, making use of the Cauchy transform, we study free multiplicative powers of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution, ${rm MP}^{boxtimes s}$, which for an integer $s$ yield Fuss-Catalan distributions corresponding to a product of $s$ independent square random matrices, $X=X_1cdots X_s$. New formulae for the level densities are derived for $s=3$ and $s=1/3$. Moreover, the level density corresponding to the generalized Bures distribution, given by the free convolution of arcsine and MP distributions is obtained. We also explain the reason of such a curious convolution. The technique proposed here allows for the derivation of the level densities for several other cases.
We introduce a new density for the representation of quantum states on phase space. It is constructed as a weighted difference of two smooth probability densities using the Husimi function and first-order Hermite spectrograms. In contrast to the Wigner function, it is accessible by sampling strategies for positive densities. In the semiclassical regime, the new density allows to approximate expectation values to second order with respect to the high frequency parameter and is thus more accurate than the uncorrected Husimi function. As an application, we combine the new phase space density with Egorovs theorem for the numerical simulation of time-evolved quantum expectations by an ensemble of classical trajectories. We present supporting numerical experiments in different settings and dimensions.
We derive isospectral flows of the mass density in the string boundary value problem corresponding to general boundary conditions. In particular, we show that certain class of rational flows produces in a suitable limit all flows generated by polynomials in negative powers of the spectral parameter. We illustrate the theory with concrete examples of isospectral flows of discrete mass densities which we prove to be Hamiltonian and for which we provide explicit solutions of equations of motion in terms of Stieltjes continued fractions and Hankel determinants.
