We discuss a problem posed by Gersten: Is every automatic group which does not contain Z+Z subgroup, hyperbolic? To study this question, we define the notion of n-tracks of length n, which is a structure like Z+Z, and prove its existence in the non-hyperbolic automatic groups with mild conditions. As an application, we show that if a group acts effectively, cellularly, properly discontinuously and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex and its quotient is weakly special, then the above question is answered affirmatively.

We study uniform exponential growth of groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes. We show that groups acting without global fixed points on CAT(0) square complexes either have uniform exponential growth or stabilize a Euclidean subcomplex. This generalizes the work of Kar and Sageev considers free actions. Our result lets us show uniform exponential growth for certain groups that act improperly on CAT(0) square complexes, namely, finitely generated subgroups of the Higman group and triangle-free Artin groups. We also obtain that non-virtually abelian groups acting freely on CAT(0) cube complexes of any dimension with isolated flats that admit a geometric group action have uniform exponential growth.

We consider a finite-dimensional, locally finite CAT(0) cube complex X admitting a co-compact properly discontinuous countable group of automorphisms G. We construct a natural compact metric space B(X) on which G acts by homeomorphisms, the action being minimal and strongly proximal. Furthermore, for any generating probability measure on G, B(X) admits a unique stationary measure, and when the measure has finite logarithmic moment, it constitutes a compact metric model of the Poisson boundary. We identify a dense G-delta subset of B(X) on which the action of G is Borel-amenable, and describe the relation of these two spaces to the Roller boundary. Our construction can be used to give a simple geometric proof of Property A for the complex. Our methods are based on direct geometric arguments regarding the asymptotic behavior of half-spaces and their limiting ultrafilters, which are of considerable independent interest. In particular we analyze the notions of median and interval in the complex, and use the latter in the proof that B(X) is the Poisson boundary via the strip criterion developed by V. Kaimanovich.

We describe a simple locally CAT(0) classifying space for extra extra large type Artin groups (with all labels at least 5). Furthermore, when the Artin group is not dihedral, we describe a rank 1 periodic geodesic, thus proving that extra large type Artin groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. Together with Property RD proved by Ciabonu, Holt and Rees, the CAT(0) property implies the Baum-Connes conjecture for all XXL type Artin groups.

We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.

We study the general theory of asymptotically CAT(0) groups, explaining why such a group has finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups, is $F_infty$ and has solvable word problem. We provide techniques to combine asymptotically CAT(0) groups via direct products, amalgams and HNN extensions. The universal cover of the Lie group $PSL(2,mathbb{R})$ is shown to be an asymptotically CAT(0) metric space. Therefore, co-compact lattices in $widetilde{PSL(2,mathbb{R})}$ provide the first examples of asymptotically CAT(0) groups which are neither CAT(0) nor hyperbolic. Another source of examples is shown to be the class of relatively hyperbolic groups.
