We present a single-quadrature feedback scheme able to overcome the conventional 3 dB limit on parametric squeezing. The method is experimentally demonstrated in a micromechanical system based on a cantilever with a magnetic tip. The cantilever is detected at low temperature by a SQUID susceptometer, while parametric pumping is obtained by modulating the magnetic field gradient at twice the cantilever frequency. A maximum squeezing of 11.5 dB and 11.3 dB is observed, respectively in the response to a sinusoidal test signal and in the thermomechanical noise. The maximum squeezing factor is limited only by the maximum achievable parametric modulation. The proposed technique can be used to squeeze one quadrature of a mechanical resonator below the quantum noise level, even without the need for a quantum limited detector.

We analyze cooling of a nano-mechanical resonator coupled to a dissipative solid state two level system focusing on the regime of high initial temperatures. We derive an effective Fokker-Planck equation for the mechanical mode which accounts for saturation and other non-linear effects and allows us to study the cooling dynamics of the resonator mode for arbitrary occupation numbers. We find a degrading of the cooling rates and eventually a breakdown of cooling at very high initial temperatures and discuss the dependence of these effects on various system parameters. Our results apply to most solid state systems which have been proposed for cooling a mechanical resonator including quantum dots, superconducting qubits and electronic spin qubits.

We study a quantum harmonic oscillator linearly coupled through the position operator $hat{q}$ to a first bath and through the momentum operator $hat{p}$ to a second bath yielding an Ohmic-Drude dissipation. We analyse the oscillators fluctuations as a function of the ratio between the strength of the two couplings, focusing in particular on the situation in which the two dissipative interactions are comparable. Analytic formulas are derived in the relevant regimes corresponding to the low temperature limit and when the Drude high frequency cutoff is much larger than all other frequencies. At low temperature, each bath operates to suppress the oscillators ground state quantum fluctuations ${langle Delta hat{q}^2 rangle}_0$ or ${langle Delta hat{p}^2 rangle}_0$ appearing in the corresponding interaction. When one of the two dissipative interactions dominates over the other, the fluctuations for the coupling operator are squeezed. When the two interactions are comparable, the two baths enter in competition as the two conjugate operators do not commute yielding quantum frustration. In this regime, remarkably, the fluctuations of both two quadratures can be enhanced by increasing the dissipative coupling.

We study rotating squeezed quantum states created by a parametric resonance in an open harmonic system. As a specific realization of the phenomenon we study a mesoscopic SQUID loop where the state preparation procedure is simple in principle and feasible with currently available experimental methods. By solving dynamics and calculating spectral properties we show that quantum fluctuations of SQUID observables can be reduced below their groundstate value. The measurement is introduced by coupling the SQUID to a transmission line carrying the radiation to a secondary measurement device. Besides the theoretical interest, our studies are motivated by an opportunity for a practical quantum noise engineering.
Using a high-quality GaAs planar microcavity, we optically generate polariton pairs, and verify their correlations by means of time-resolved single-photon detection. We find that correlations between the different modes are consistently lower than identical mode correlations, which is attributed to the presence of uncorrelated background. We discuss a model to quantify the effects of such a background on the observed correlations. Using spectral and temporal filtering, the background can be suppressed and a change in photon statistics towards non-classical correlations is observed. These results improve our understanding of the statistics of polariton-polariton scattering and background mechanisms, and pave the way to the generation of entangled polariton pairs.
We theoretically study the angular displacements estimation based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), in which two optical parametric amplifiers (PAs) are introduced into two arms of the standard MZI, respectively. The employment of PAs can both squeeze the shot noise and amplify the photon number inside the interferometer. When the unknown angular displacements are introduced to both arms, we derive the multiparameter quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) using the quantum Fisher information matrix approach, and the bound of angular displacements difference between the two arms is compared with the sensitivity of angular displacement using the intensity detection. On the other hand, in the case where the unknown angular displacement is in only one arm, we give the sensitivity of angular displacement using the method of homodyne detection. It can surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) and approach the single parameter QCRB. Finally, the effect of photon losses on sensitivity is discussed.
