We present a modification to our recently published SAFT-based classical density functional theory for water. We have recently developed and tested a functional for the averaged radial distribution function at contact of the hard-sphere fluid that is dramatically more accurate at interfaces than earlier approximations. We now incorporate this improved functional into the association term of our free energy functional for water, improving its description of hydrogen bonding. We examine the effect of this improvement by studying two hard solutes: a hard hydrophobic rod and a hard sphere. The improved functional leads to a moderate change in the density profile and a large decrease in the number of hydrogen bonds broken in the vicinity of the solutes. We present a modification to our recently published SAFT-based classical density functional theory for water. Classical density functional theory for finite temperatures is usually formulated in the grand-canonical ensemble where arbitrary variations of the local density are possible. However, in many cases the systems of interest are closed with respect to mass, e.g. canonical systems with fixed temperature and particle number. Although the tools of standard, grand-canonical density functional theory are often used in an ad hoc manner to study closed systems, their formulation directly in the canonical ensemble has so far not been known. In this work, the fundamental theorems underlying classical DFT are revisited and carefully compared in the two ensembles showing that there are only trivial formal differences. The practicality of DFT in the canonical ensemble is then illustrated by deriving the exact Helmholtz functional for several systems: the ideal gas, certain restricted geometries in arbitrary numbers of dimensions and finally a system of two hard-spheres in one dimension (hard rods) in a small cavity. Some remarkable similarities between the ensembles are apparent even for small systems with the latter showing strong echoes of the famous exact of result of Percus in the grand-canonical ensemble.
We have explored a model for adsorption of water into slit-like nanochannels with two walls chemically modified by grafted polymer layers forming brushes. A version of density functional method is used as theoretical tools. The water-like fluid model adopted from the work of Clark et al. [Mol. Phys., 2006, 104, 3561] adequately reproduces the bulk vapour-liquid coexistence envelope. The polymer layer consists of chain molecules in the framework of pearl-necklace model. Each chain molecule is chemically bonded to the pore walls by a single terminating segment. Our principal focus is in the study of the dependence of polymer layer height on grafting density and in the microscopic structure of the interface between adsorbed fluid and brushes. Thermal response of these properties upon adsorption is investigated in detail. The results are of importance to understand shrinking and swelling of the molecular brushes in the nanochannels.
We use machine learning methods to approximate a classical density functional. As a study case, we choose the model problem of a Lennard Jones fluid in one dimension where there is no exact solution available and training data sets must be obtained from simulations. After separating the excess free energy functional into a repulsive and an attractive part, machine learning finds a functional in weighted density form for the attractive part. The density profile at a hard wall shows good agreement for thermodynamic conditions beyond the training set conditions. This also holds for the equation of state if it is evaluated near the training temperature. We discuss the applicability to problems in higher dimensions.

Accurate calculations of electrostatic potentials and treatment of substrate polarizability are critical for predicting the permeation of ions inside water-filled nanopores. The {it ab initio} molecular dynamics method (AIMD), based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), accounts for the polarizability of materials, water, and solutes, and it should be the method of choice for predicting accurate electrostatic energies of ions. In practice, DFT coupled with the use of periodic boundary conditions in a charged system leads to large energy shifts. Results obtained using different DFT packages may vary because of the way pseudopotentials and long-range electrostatics are implemented. Using maximally localized Wannier functions, we apply robust corrections that yield relatively unambiguous ion energies in select molecular and aqueous systems and inside carbon nanotubes. Large binding energies are predicted for ions in metallic carbon nanotube arrays, while with consistent definitions Na$^+$ and Cl$^-$ energies are found to exhibit asymmetries comparable with those computed using non-polarizable water force fields.
