A flexible and efficient method for fully vectorial modal analysis of 3D dielectric optical waveguides with arbitrary 2D cross-sections is proposed. The technique is based on expansion of each modal component in some a priori defined functions defined on one coordinate axis times some unknown coefficient-functions, defined on the other axis. By applying a variational restriction procedure the unknown coefficient-functions are determined, resulting in an optimum approximation of the true vectorial mode profile. This technique can be related to both Effective Index and Mode Matching methods. A couple of examples illustrate the performance of the method.

Optical microresonators are of paramount importance in photonic circuits requiring fine spectral filtering or resonant light recirculation. Key performance metrics improve with increasing resonance quality factor (Q) across all applications. The performance of silicon photonic circuits is often hampered by the low-quality factor of planar silicon microresonators, typically of Q~10^4-10^5. On the other hand, bulk whispering gallery mode resonators provide a wide range of materials with intriguing optical properties and exceptionally high resonant quality factors Q>10^7. However, the efficient coupling between bulk resonators and planar Si photonic waveguides is considered challenging, if not impossible, due to remarkably large mismatch in size and refractive index. Here, we show an efficient method to couple bulk resonators and Si waveguides based on subwavelength metamaterial engineering of silicon. Based on this approach, we experimentally demonstrate coupling between 220-nm-thick Si waveguides and bulk microresonators made of silica, lithium niobate and calcium fluoride with diameters in the 0.3-3.5 mm range, achieving high coupling efficiency of 75-99% and exceptional Q of 10^6-10^7. These results open a new route for the heterogeneous integration of bulk resonators and silicon photonic circuits, with great potential for applications in sensing, microwave-photonics, and quantum photonics, to name a few.
A novel terahertz hybrid waveguide chip consisting of silicon photonic crystals sandwiched in parallel gold plates is developed. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid waveguide offers a wide single-mode transmission window with low group velocity dispersion and low loss. This compact, substrate-free terahertz chip would play a significant role in broadband, dense-integrated, multi-functional terahertz systems.
Topological lasers have been intensively investigated as a strong candidate for robust single-mode lasers. A typical topological laser employs a single-mode topological edge state, which appears deterministically in a designed topological bandgap and exhibits robustness to disorder. These properties seem to be highly attractive in pursuit of high power lasers capable of single mode operation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze a large-scale single-mode laser based on a topological edge state. We consider a sizable array laser consisting of a few hundreds of site resonators, which support a single topological edge mode broadly distributed among the resonators. We build a basic model describing the laser using the tight binding approximation and evaluate the stability of single mode lasing based on the threshold gain difference $Deltaalpha$ between the first-lasing edge mode and the second-lasing competing bulk mode. Our calculations demonstrate that stronger couplings between the cavities and lower losses are advantageous for achieving stable operation of the device. When assuming an average coupling of 100 cm$^{-1}$ between site resonators and other realistic parameters, the threshold gain difference $Deltaalpha$ can reach about 2 cm$^{-1}$, which would be sufficient for stable single mode lasing using a conventional semiconductor laser architecture. We also consider the effects of possible disorders and long-range interactions to assess the robustness of the laser under non-ideal situations. These results lay the groundwork for developing single-mode high-power topological lasers.
The emission rate of a point dipole can be strongly increased in presence of a well-designed optical antenna. Yet, optical antenna design is largely based on radio-frequency rules, ignoring e.g.~ohmic losses and non-negligible field penetration in metals at optical frequencies. Here we combine reciprocity and Poyntings theorem to derive a set of optical-frequency antenna design rules for benchmarking and optimizing the performance of optical antennas driven by single quantum emitters. Based on these findings a novel plasmonic cavity antenna design is presented exhibiting a considerably improved performance compared to a reference two-wire antenna. Our work will be useful for the design of high-performance optical antennas and nanoresonators for diverse applications ranging from quantum optics to antenna-enhanced single-emitter spectroscopy and sensing.

The transverse structure of light is recognized as a resource that can be used to encode information onto photons and has been shown to be useful to enhance communication capacity as well as resolve point sources in superresolution imaging. The Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes form a complete and orthonormal basis set and are described by a radial index p and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) index l. Earlier works have shown how to build a sorter for the radial index p or/and the OAM index l of LG modes, but a scalable and dedicated LG mode sorter which simultaneous determinate p and l is immature. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to accomplish complete LG mode sorting, which consists of a novel, robust radial mode sorter that can be used to couple radial modes to polarizations, an l-dependent phase shifter and an OAM mode sorter. Our scheme is in principle efficient, scalable, and crosstalk-free, and therefore has potential for applications in optical communications, quantum information technology, superresolution imaging, and fiber optics.
