For a classical system of noninteracting particles we establish recursive integral equations for the density of states on the microcanonical ensemble. The recursion can be either on the number of particles or on the dimension of the system. The solution of the integral equations is particularly simple when the single-particle density of states in one dimension follows a power law. Otherwise it can be obtained using a Laplace transform method. Since the Laplace transform of the microcanonical density of states is the canonical partition function, it factorizes for a system of noninteracting particles and the solution of the problem is straightforward. The results are illustrated on several classical examples.

We present a finite-order system of recurrence relations for a permanent of circulant matrices containing a band of k any-value diagonals on top of a uniform matrix (for k = 1, 2, and 3) as well as the method for deriving such recurrence relations which is based on the permanents of the matrices with defects. The proposed system of linear recurrence equations with variable coefficients provides a powerful tool for the analysis of the circulant permanents, their fast, linear time computing and finding their asymptotics in a large-matrix-size limit. The latter problem is an open fundamental problem. Its solution would be tremendously important for a unified analysis of a wide range of the natures #P-hard problems, including problems in the physics of many-body systems, critical phenomena, quantum computing, quantum field theory, theory of chaos, fractals, theory of graphs, number theory, combinatorics, cryptography, etc.
In the present work, we discuss how the functional form of thermodynamic observables can be deduced from the geometric properties of subsets of phase space. The geometric quantities taken into account are mainly extrinsic curvatures of the energy level sets of the Hamiltonian of a system under investigation. In particular, it turns out that peculiar behaviours of thermodynamic observables at a phase transition point are rooted in more fundamental changes of the geometry of the energy level sets in phase space. More specifically, we discuss how microcanonical and geometrical descriptions of phase-transitions are shaped in the special case of $phi^4$ models with either nearest-neighbours and mean-field interactions.

It is shown that the algorithm introduced in [1] and conceived to deal with continuous degrees of freedom models is well suited to compute the density of states in models with a discrete energy spectrum too. The q=10 D=2 Potts model is considered as a test case, and it is shown that using the Maxwell construction the interface free energy can be obtained, in the thermodynamic limit, with a good degree of accuracy.

By means of the principle of minimal sensitivity we generalize the microcanonical inflection-point analysis method by probing derivatives of the microcanonical entropy for signals of transitions in complex systems. A strategy of systematically identifying and locating independent and dependent phase transitions of any order is proposed. The power of the generalized method is demonstrated in applications to the ferromagnetic Ising model and a coarse-grained model for polymer adsorption onto a substrate. The results shed new light on the intrinsic phase structure of systems with cooperative behavior.
In a microcanonical ensemble (constant $NVE$, hard reflecting walls) and in a molecular dynamics ensemble (constant $NVEmathbf{PG}$, periodic boundary conditions) with a number $N$ of smooth elastic hard spheres in a $d$-dimensional volume $V$ having a total energy $E$, a total momentum $mathbf{P}$, and an overall center of mass position $mathbf{G}$, the individual velocity components, velocity moduli, and energies have transformed beta distributions with different arguments and shape parameters depending on $d$, $N$, $E$, the boundary conditions, and possible symmetries in the initial conditions. This can be shown marginalizing the joint distribution of individual energies, which is a symmetric Dirichlet distribution. In the thermodynamic limit the beta distributions converge to gamma distributions with different arguments and shape or scale parameters, corresponding respectively to the Gaussian, i.e., Maxwell-Boltzmann, Maxwell, and Boltzmann or Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution. These analytical results agree with molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations with different numbers of hard disks or spheres and hard reflecting walls or periodic boundary conditions. The agreement is perfect with our Monte Carlo algorithm, which acts only on velocities independently of positions with the collision versor sampled uniformly on a unit half sphere in $d$ dimensions, while slight deviations appear with our molecular dynamics simulations for the smallest values of $N$.
