We consider a class of toy models where a spatially flat universe is filled with a perfect fluid. The dynamics is found exactly for all these models. In one family, the perfect fluid is of the phantom type and we find that the universe is first contracting and then expanding while the dynamics is always accelerated. In a second family, the universe is first in an accelerated expansion stage, then in a decelerated expansion stage until it reaches a turning point after which it contracts in a decelerated way (increasing contraction rate) followed by another accelerated stage (decreasing contraction rate). We also consider the possibility to embed this perfect fluid in a realistic cosmology. The first family cannot be viable in a conventional big bang universe and requires a rebound in the very early universe. The second family is viable in the range $0<1+w_{DE,0}lesssim 0.09$ for a spatially closed universe with a curvature satisfying current bounds. Though many of the models in this family cannot be distinguished today from a universe dominated by a cosmological constant, the present accelerated expansion is transient and these universes will reach a turning point in the future before entering a contraction phase.

In the attempts toward a quantum gravity theory, general relativity faces a serious difficulty since it is non-renormalizable theory. Hov{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity offers a framework to circumvent this difficulty, by sacrificing the local Lorentz invariance at ultra-high energy scales in exchange of power-counting renormalizability. The Lorentz symmetry is expected to be recovered at low and medium energy scales. If gravitation is to be described by a Hov{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity theory there are a number of issues that ought to be reexamined in its context, including the question as to whether this gravity incorporates a chronology protection, or particularly if it allows Godel-type solutions with violation of causality. We show that Hov{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity only allows hyperbolic Godel-type space-times whose essential parameters $m$ and $omega$ are in the chronology respecting intervals, excluding therefore any noncausal Godel-type space-times in the hyperbolic class. There emerges from our results that the famous noncausal Godel model is not allowed in Hov{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity. The question as to whether this quantum gravity theory permits hyperbolic Godel-type solutions in the chronology preserving interval of the essential parameters is also examined. We show that Hov{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity not only excludes the noncausal Godel universe, but also rules out any hyperbolic Godel-type solutions for physically well-motivated perfect-fluid matter content.
An important, and potentially detectable, signature of a non-trivial topology for the universe is the presence of so called circles-in-the-sky in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Recent searches, confined to antipodal and nearly antipodal circles, have however failed to detect any. This outcome, coupled with recent theoretical results concerning the detectability of very nearly flat universes, is sufficient to exclude a detectable non-trivial cosmic topology for most observers in the inflationary limit ($0< |Omega_{tot}-1| lesssim 10^{-5}$). In a recent paper we have studied the consequences of these searches for circles if the Universe turns out to be exactly flat ($Omega_{tot} = 1 $) as is often assumed. More specifically, we have derived the maximum angles of deviation possible from antipodicity of pairs of matching circles associated with the shortest closed geodesic for all multiply-connected flat orientable $3$-manifolds. These upper bounds on the deviation from antipodicity demonstrate that in a flat universe for some classes of topology there remains a substantial fraction of observers for whom the deviation from antipodicity of the matching circles is considerably larger than zero, which implies that the searches for circles-in-the-sky undertaken so far are not enough to exclude the possibility of a detectable non-trivial flat topology. Here we briefly review these results and discuss their consequences in the search for circles-in-the-sky in a flat universes.
CMB spectral distortions are induced by Compton collisions with electrons. We review the various schemes to characterize the anisotropic CMB with a non-Planckian spectrum. We advocate using logarithmically averaged temperature moments as the preferred language to describe these spectral distortions, both for theoretical modeling and observations. Numerical modeling is simpler, the moments are frame-independent, and in terms of scattering the mode truncation is exact.
The Minkowski vacuum state is expressed as an entangled state between the left and right Rindler wedges when it is constructed on the Rindler vacuum. In this paper, we further examine the entanglement structure and extend the expression to the future (expanding) and past (shrinking) Kasner spacetimes. This clarifies the origin of the quantum radiation produced by an Unruh--DeWitt detector in uniformly accelerated motion in the four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We also investigate the two-dimensional massless case where the quantum radiation vanishes but the same entanglement structure exists.
We investigate constraints on the Hubble constant ($H_0$) using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and baryon density measurements from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We start by investigating the tension between galaxy BAO measurements and those using the Lyman-$alpha$ forest, within a Bayesian framework. Using the latest results from eBOSS DR14 we find that the probability of this tension being statistical is $simeq6.3%$ assuming flat $Lambda$CDM. We measure $H_0 = 67.6pm1.1$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, with a weak dependence on the BBN prior used, in agreement with results from Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) results and in strong tension with distance ladder results. Finally, we forecast the future of BAO $+$ BBN measurements of $H_0$, using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We find that the choice of BBN prior will have a significant impact when considering future BAO measurements from DESI.
