We investigate the geometrical mapping of algebraic models. As particular examples we consider the Semimicriscopic Algebraic Cluster Model (SACM) and the Phenomenological Algebraic Cluster Model (PACM), which also contains the vibron model, as a special case. In the geometrical mapping coherent states are employed as trial states. We show that the coherent state variables have to be renormalized and not the interaction terms of the Hamiltonian, as is usually done. The coherent state variables will depend on the total number of bosons and the coherent state variables. The nature of these variables is extracted through a relation obtained by comparing physical observables, such as the distance between the clusters or the quadrupole deformation of the nucleus, to their algebraic counterpart.

The coherent state model (CSM) and the triaxial rotation-vibration model (TRVM) are alternatively used to describe the ground, gamma and beta bands of 228Th. CSM is also applied to the nuclei 126Xe and 130Ba, which were recently considered in TRVM. The two models are compared with respect to both their underlying assumptions and to their predicted results for energy levels and E2 branching ratios. Both models describe energies and quadrupole transitions of 228Th equally well and in good agreement with experiment, if the 0$_3^+$ level at 1120 keV is interpreted as the head of the beta band. The other two 0$^+$ levels at 832 and 939 keV are most likely not of a pure quadrupole vibration nature as has already been pointed out in the literature.

The classical and quantal features of a quadrupole coherent state and its projections over angular momentum and boson number are quantitatively analyzed in terms of the departure of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations from the classical limit. This study is performed alternatively for two choices of the pairs of conjugate coordinates. The role of deformation as mediator of classical and quantal behaviors is also commented. Although restoring the rotational and gauge symmetries makes the quantal features manifest dominantly for small deformation, these are blurred by increasing the deformation which pushes the system toward a classical limit.
The geometrical mapping of algebraic nuclear cluster models is investigated within the coherent state formalism. Two models are considered: the Semimicroscopic Algebraic Cluster Model (SACM) and the Phenomenological Algebraic Cluster Model (PACM), which is a special limit of the SACM. The SACM strictly observes the Pauli exclusion principle while the PACM does not. The discussion of the SACM is adapted to the coherent state formalism by introducing the new SO(3) dynamical symmetry limit and third-order interaction terms in the Hamiltonian. The potential energy surface is constructed in both models and it is found that the effects of the Pauli principle can be simulated by higher-order interaction terms in the PACM. The present study is also meant to serve as a starting point for investigating phase transitions in the two algebraic cluster models.
In nuclear structure calculations, the choice of a limited model space, due to computational needs, leads to the necessity to renormalize the Hamiltonian as well as any transition operator. Here, we present a study of the renormalization procedure and effects of the Gamow-Teller operator within the framework of the realistic shell model. Our effective shell-model operators are obtained, starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential, by way of the many-body perturbation theory in order to take into account the degrees of freedom that are not explicitly included in the chosen model space. The theoretical effective shell-model Hamiltonian and transition operators are then employed in shell-model calculations, whose results are compared with data of Gamow-Teller transition strengths and double-beta half-lives for nuclei which are currently of interest for the detection of the neutrinoless double-beta decay process, in a mass interval ranging from A=48 up to A=136. We show that effective operators are able to reproduce quantitatively the spectroscopic and decay properties without resorting to an empirical quenching neither of the axial coupling constant gA, nor of the spin and orbital gyromagnetic factors. This should assess the reliability of applying present theoretical tools to this problematic.

Algebraic models are proposed for the description of the shell-like quarteting of the nucleons both on the phenomenologic and on the semimicroscopic levels. In the previous one the quartet is considered as a structureless object, while in the latter one its constituents are treated explicitely. The excitation spectrum is generated by the SU(3) formalism in both cases. An application to the $^{20}$Ne nucleus is presented.
