In this paper we study a systematic and natural construction of canonical coordinates for the reduced space of a cotangent bundle with a free Lie group action. The canonical coordinates enable us to compute Poincar{e}-Birkhoff normal forms of relative equilibria using standard algorithms. The case of simple mechanical systems with symmetries is studied in detail. As examples we compute Poincar{e}-Birkhoff normal forms for a Lagrangian equilateral triangle configuration of a three-body system with a Morse-type potential and the stretched-out configuration of a double spherical pendulum.
We consider the problem of the continuation with respect to a small parameter $epsilon$ of spatially localised and time periodic solutions in 1-dimensional dNLS lattices, where $epsilon$ represents the strength of the interaction among the sites on the lattice. Specifically, we consider different dNLS models and apply a recently developed normal form algorithm in order to investigate the continuation and the linear stability of degenerate localised periodic orbits on lower and full dimensional invariant resonant tori. We recover results already existing in the literature and provide new insightful ones, both for discrete solitons and for invariant subtori.
Birkhoff normal forms are commonly used in order to ensure the so called effective stability in the neighborhood of elliptic equilibrium points for Hamiltonian systems. From a theoretical point of view, this means that the eventual diffusion can be bounded for time intervals that are exponentially large with respect to the inverse of the distance of the initial conditions from such equilibrium points. Here, we focus on an approach that is suitable for practical applications: we extend a rather classical scheme of estimates for both the Birkhoff normal forms to any finite order and their remainders. This is made for providing explicit lower bounds of the stability time (that are valid for initial conditions in a fixed open ball), by using a fully rigorous computer-assisted procedure. We apply our approach in two simple contexts that are widely studied in Celestial Mechanics: the Henon-Heiles model and the Circular Planar Restricted Three-Body Problem. In the latter case, we adapt our scheme of estimates for covering also the case of resonant Birkhoff normal forms and, in some concrete models about the motion of the Trojan asteroids, we show that it can be more advantageous with respect to the usual non-resonant ones.
We establish quantitative results for the statistical be-ha-vi-our of emph{infinite systems}. We consider two kinds of infinite system: i) a conservative dynamical system $(f,X,mu)$ preserving a $sigma$-finite measure $mu$ such that $mu(X)=infty$; ii) the case where $mu$ is a probability measure but we consider the statistical behaviour of an observable $phicolon Xto[0,infty)$ which is non-integrable: $int phi , dmu=infty$. In the first part of this work we study the behaviour of Birkhoff sums of systems of the kind ii). For certain weakly chaotic systems, we show that these sums can be strongly oscillating. However, if the system has superpolynomial decay of correlations or has a Markov structure, then we show this oscillation cannot happen. In this case we prove asymptotic relations between the behaviour of $phi $, the local dimension of $mu$, and on the growth of Birkhoff sums (as time tends to infinity). We then establish several important consequences which apply to infinite systems of the kind i). This includes showing anomalous scalings in extreme event limit laws, or entrance time statistics. We apply our findings to non-uniformly hyperbolic systems preserving an infinite measure, establishing anomalous scalings in the case of logarithm laws of entrance times, dynamical Borel--Cantelli lemmas, almost sure growth rates of extremes, and dynamical run length functions.
In this paper we study the Birkhoff Normal Form around elliptic periodic points for a variety of dynamical billiards. We give an explicit construction of the Birkhoff transformation and obtain explicit formulas for the first two twist coefficients in terms of the geometric parameters of the billiard table. As an application, we obtain characterizations of the nonlinear stability and local analytic integrability of the billiards around the elliptic periodic points.
The Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin model describes a collection of $n$ spins coupled to an harmonic oscillator. It is known to be integrable, so one can define a moment map which associates to each point in phase-space the list of values of the $n+1$ conserved Hamiltonians. We identify all the critical points of this map and we compute the corresponding quadratic normal forms, using the Lax matrix representation of the model. The normal coordinates are constructed by a procedure which appears as a classical version of the Bethe Ansatz used to solve the quantum model. We show that only elliptic or focus-focus singularities are present in this model, which provides an interesting example of a symplectic toric action with singularities. To explore these, we study in detail the degeneracies of the spectral curves for the $n=1$ and $n=2$ cases. This gives a complete picture for the image of the momentum map (IMM) and the associated bifurcation diagram. For $n=2$ we found in particular some lines of rank 1 which lie, for one part, on the boundary of the IMM, where they behave like an edge separating two faces, and which go, for another part, inside the IMM.
