Using data on the Berlin public transport network, the present study extends previous observations of fractality within public transport routes by showing that also the distribution of inter-station distances along routes displays non-trivial power law behaviour. This indicates that the routes may in part also be described as Levy-flights. The latter property may result from the fact that the routes are planned to adapt to fluctuating demand densities throughout the served area. Random walks constitute a fundamental mechanism for many dynamics taking place on complex networks. Besides, as a more realistic description of our society, multiplex networks have been receiving a growing interest, as well as the dynamical processes that occur on top of them. Here, inspired by one specific model of random walks that seems to be ubiquitous across many scientific fields, the Levy flight, we study a new navigation strategy on top of multiplex networks. Capitalizing on spectral graph and stochastic matrix theories, we derive analytical expressions for the mean first passage time and the average time to reach a node on these networks. Moreover, we also explore the efficiency of Levy random walks, which we found to be very different as compared to the single layer scenario, accounting for the structure and dynamics inherent to the multiplex network. Finally, by comparing with some other important random walk processes defined on multiplex networks, we find that in some region of the parameters, a Levy random walk is the most efficient strategy. Our results give us a deeper understanding of Levy random walks and show the importance of considering the topological structure of multiplex networks when trying to find efficient navigation strategies.
Properties of random and fluctuating systems are often studied through the use of Gaussian distributions. However, in a number of situations, rare events have drastic consequences, which can not be explained by Gaussian statistics. Considerable efforts have thus been devoted to the study of non Gaussian fluctuations such as Levy statistics, generalizing the standard description of random walks. Unfortunately only macroscopic signatures, obtained by averaging over many random steps, are usually observed in physical systems. We present experimental results investigating the elementary process of anomalous diffusion of photons in hot atomic vapours. We measure the step size distribution of the random walk and show that it follows a power law characteristic of Levy flights.
We consider one-dimensional discrete-time random walks (RWs) with arbitrary symmetric and continuous jump distributions $f(eta)$, including the case of Levy flights. We study the expected maximum ${mathbb E}[M_n]$ of bridge RWs, i.e., RWs starting and ending at the origin after $n$ steps. We obtain an exact analytical expression for ${mathbb E}[M_n]$ valid for any $n$ and jump distribution $f(eta)$, which we then analyze in the large $n$ limit up to second leading order term. For jump distributions whose Fourier transform behaves, for small $k$, as $hat f(k) sim 1 - |a, k|^mu$ with a Levy index $0<mu leq 2$ and an arbitrary length scale $a>0$, we find that, at leading order for large $n$, ${mathbb E}[M_n]sim a, h_1(mu), n^{1/mu}$. We obtain an explicit expression for the amplitude $h_1(mu)$ and find that it carries the signature of the bridge condition, being different from its counterpart for the free random walk. For $mu=2$, we find that the second leading order term is a constant, which, quite remarkably, is the same as its counterpart for the free RW. For generic $0< mu < 2$, this second leading order term is a growing function of $n$, which depends non-trivially on further details of $hat f (k)$, beyond the Levy index $mu$. Finally, we apply our results to compute the mean perimeter of the convex hull of the $2d$ Rouse polymer chain and of the $2d$ run-and-tumble particle, as well as to the computation of the survival probability in a bridge version of the well-known lamb-lion capture problem.
We study the connective constants of weighted self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on infinite graphs and groups. The main focus is upon weighted SAWs on finitely generated, virtually indicable groups. Such groups possess so-called height functions, and this permits the study of SAWs with the special property of being bridges. The group structure is relevant in the interaction between the height function and the weight function. The main difficulties arise when the support of the weight function is unbounded, since the corresponding graph is no longer locally finite. There are two principal results, of which the first is a condition under which the weighted connective constant and the weighted bridge constant are equal. When the weight function has unbounded support, we work with a generalized notion of the length of a walk, which is subject to a certain condition. In the second main result, the above equality is used to prove a continuity theorem for connective constants on the space of weight functions endowed with a suitable distance function.
Virtually all real-world networks are dynamical entities. In social networks, the propensity of nodes to engage in social interactions (activity) and their chances to be selected by active nodes (attractiveness) are heterogeneously distributed. Here, we present a time-varying network model where each node and the dynamical formation of ties are characterised by these two features. We study how these properties affect random walk processes unfolding on the network when the time scales describing the process and the network evolution are comparable. We derive analytical solutions for the stationary state and the mean first passage time of the process and we study cases informed by empirical observations of social networks. Our work shows that previously disregarded properties of real social systems such heterogeneous distributions of activity and attractiveness as well as the correlations between them, substantially affect the dynamical process unfolding on the network.
