We study the production of $Xi^-$-hypernuclei, $^{12}_{Xi^{-}}$Be and $^{28}_{Xi^{-}}$Mg, via the ($K^-,K^+$) reaction within a covariant effective Lagrangian model, employing the bound $Xi^-$ and proton spinors calculated by the latest quark-meson coupling model. The present treatment yields the $0^circ$ differential cross sections for the formation of simple s-state $Xi^-$ particle-hole states peak at a beam momentum around 1.0 GeV/c with a value in excess of 1 $mu$b.
The most recent development of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, in which the effect of the mean scalar field in-medium on the hyperfine interaction is also included self-consistently, is used to compute the properties of finite hypernuclei. The calculations for $Lambda$ and $Xi$ hypernuclei are of comparable quality to earlier QMC results without the additional parameter needed there. Even more significantly, the additional repulsion associated with the increased hyperfine interaction in-medium completely changes the predictions for $Sigma$ hypernuclei. Whereas in the earlier work they were bound by an amount similar to $Lambda$ hypernuclei, here they are unbound, in qualitative agreement with the experimental absence of such states. The equivalent non-relativistic potential felt by the $Sigma$ is repulsive inside the nuclear interior and weakly attractive in the nuclear surface, as suggested by the analysis of $Sigma$-atoms.
In this talk, we investigate $Xi(1690)^-$ production from the $K^-pto K^+K^-Lambda$ reaction wit the effective Lagrangian method and consider the $s$- and $u$-channel $Sigma/Lambda$ ground states and resonances for the $Xi$-pole contributions, in addition to the $s$-channel $Lambda$, $u$-channel nucleon pole, and $t$-channel $K^-$-exchange for the $phi$-pole contributions. The $Xi$-pole includes $Xi(1320)$, $Xi(1535)$, $Xi(1690)(J^p=1/2^-)$, and $Xi(1820)(J^p=3/2^-)$. We compute the Dalitz plot density of $(d^2sigma/dM_{K^+K^-}dM_{K^-Lambda}$ at 4.2 GeV$/c$) and the total cross sections for the $K^-pto K^+K^-Lambda$. Employing the parameters from the fit, we present the cross sections for the two-body $K^-pto K^+Xi(1690)^-$ reaction near the threshold. We also demonstrate that the Dalitz plot analysis for $p_{K^-}=1.915 sim2.065$ GeV/c makes us to explore direct information for $Xi(1690)^-$ production, which can be done by future $K^-$ beam experiments.
The E885 collaboration utilized the 1.8 GeV/c K^- beam line at the AGS to accumulate 3 x 10^5 (K^-,K^+) events. Xi hypernuclear states are expected to be produced through the reaction K^- + ^{12}C -> K^+ + ^{12}_{Xi}Be. The measured missing-mass spectrum indicates the existence of a signal below the threshold for free Xi production. Although the resolution was not sufficient to resolve discrete hypernuclear states, the excess of events in the region of missing mass, kinematically inaccessible in free Xi production, is compared to theoretical prediction for ^{12}_{Xi}Be production.
The $bar{K} + N to K + Xi$ reaction is studied for center-of-momentum energies ranging from threshold to 3 GeV in an effective Lagrangian approach that includes the hyperon $s$- and $u$-channel contributions as well as a phenomenological contact amplitude. The latter accounts for the rescattering term in the scattering equation and possible short-range dynamics not included explicitly in the model. Existing data are well reproduced and three above-the-threshold resonances were found to be required to describe the data, namely, the $Lambda(1890)$, $Sigma(2030)$, and $Sigma(2250)$. For the latter resonance we have assumed the spin-parity of $J^P=5/2^-$ and a mass of 2265 MeV. The $Sigma(2030)$ resonance is crucial in achieving a good reproduction of not only the measured total and differential cross sections, but also the recoil polarization asymmetry. More precise data are required before a more definitive statement can be made about the other two resonances, in particular, about the $Sigma(2250)$ resonance that is introduced to describe a small bump structure observed in the total cross section of $K^- + p to K^+ + Xi^-$. The present analysis also reveals a peculiar behavior of the total cross section data in the threshold energy region in $K^- + p to K^+ + Xi^-$, where the $P$- and $D$-waves dominate instead of the usual $S$-wave. Predictions for the target-recoil asymmetries of the $bar{K} + N to K + Xi$ reaction are also presented.
We give a short review of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, the quark-based model of finite nuclei and hadron interactions in a nuclear medium, highlighting on the relationship with the Skyrme effective nuclear forces. The model is based on a mean field description of nonoverlapping nucleon MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of Lorentz-scalar-isoscalar, Lorentz-vector-isoscalar, and Lorentz-vector-isovector meson fields directly coupled to the light quarks up and down. In conventional nuclear physics the Skyrme effective forces are very popular, but, there is no satisfactory interpretation of the parameters appearing in the Skyrme forces. Comparing a many-body Hamiltonian generated by the QMC model in the zero-range limit with that of the Skyrme force, it is possible to obtain a remarkable agreement between the Skyrme force and the QMC effective interaction. Furthermore, it is shown that 3-body and higher order N-body forces are naturally included in the QMC-generated effective interaction.
