Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the Abel averages of discrete and strongly continuous semigroups, $T^k$ and $T_t$, to be power convergent in the operator norm in a complex Banach space. These results cover also the case where $T$ is unbounded and the corresponding Abel average is defined by means of the resolvent of $T$. They complement the classical results by Michael Lin establishing sufficient conditions for the corresponding convergence for a bounded $T$.

We investigate some ergodic and spectral properties of general (discrete) $C^*$-dynamical systems $({mathfrak A},Phi)$ made of a unital $C^*$-algebra and a multiplicative, identity-preserving $*$-map $Phi:{mathfrak A}to{mathfrak A}$, particularising the situation when $({mathfrak A},Phi)$ enjoys the property of unique ergodicity with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra. For $C^*$-dynamical systems enjoying or not the strong ergodic property mentioned above, we provide conditions on $lambda$ in the unit circle ${zin{mathbb C}mid |z|=1}$ and the corresponding eigenspace ${mathfrak A}_lambdasubset{mathfrak A}$ for which the sequence of Cesaro averages $left(frac1{n}sum_{k=0}^{n-1}lambda^{-k}Phi^kright)_{n>0}$, converges point-wise in norm. We also describe some pivotal examples coming from quantum probability, to which the obtained results can be applied.
A class of maps in a complex Banach space is studied, which includes both unbounded linear operators and nonlinear holomorphic maps. The defining property, which we call {sl pseudo-contractivity}, is introduced by means of the Abel averages of such maps. We show that the studied maps are dissipative in the spirit of the classical Lumer-Phillips theorem. For pseudo-contractive holomorphic maps, we establish the power convergence of the Abel averages to holomorphic retractions.
Integral operators of Abel type of order a > 0 arise naturally in a large spectrum of physical processes. Their inversion requires care since the resulting inverse problem is ill-posed. The purpose of this work is to devise and analyse a family of appropriate Hilbert scales so that the operator is ill-posed of order a in the scale. We provide weak regularity assumptions on the kernel underlying the operator for the above to hold true. Our construction leads to a well-defined regularisation strategy by Tikhonov regularisation in Hilbert scales. We thereby generalise the results of Gorenflo and Yamamoto for a < 1 to arbitrary a > 0 and more general kernels. Thanks to tools from interpolation theory, we also show that the a priori associated to the Hilbert scale formulates in terms of smoothness in usual Sobolev spaces up to boundary conditions, and that the regularisation term actually amounts to penalising derivatives. Finally, following the theoretical construction, we develop a comprehensive numerical approach, where the a priori is encoded in a single parameter rather than in a full operator. Several numerical examples are shown, both confirming the theoretical convergence rates and showing the general applicability of the method.
Pointwise convergence of spherical averages is proved for a measure-preserving action of a Fuchsian group. The proof is based on a new variant of the Bowen-Series symbolic coding for Fuchsian groups that, developing a method introduced by Wroten, simultaneously encodes all possible shortest paths representing a given group element. The resulting coding is self-inverse, giving a reversible Markov chain to which methods previously introduced by the first author for the case of free groups may be applied.
We present conditions that allow us to pass from the convergence of probability measures in distribution to the uniform convergence of the associated quantile functions. Under these conditions, one can in particular pass from the asymptotic distribution of collections of real numbers, such as the eigenvalues of a family of $n$-by-$n$ matrices as $n$ goes to infinity, to their uniform approximation by the values of the quantile function at equidistant points. For Hermitian Toeplitz-like matrices, convergence in distribution is ensured by theorems of the SzegH{o} type. Our results transfer these convergence theorems into uniform convergence statements.
