Integrated quantum photonics is an appealing platform for quantum information processing, quantum communication and quantum metrology. In all these applications it is necessary not only to be able to create and detect Fock states of light but also to program the photonic circuits that implements some desired logical operation. Here we demonstrate a reconfigurable controlled two-qubit operation on a chip using a multiwaveguide interferometer with a tunable phase shifter. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment, with a 0.98 pm 0.02 average similarity between measured and ideal operations.

Quantum teleportation is a fundamental concept in quantum physics which now finds important applications at the heart of quantum technology including quantum relays, quantum repeaters and linear optics quantum computing (LOQC). Photonic implementations have largely focussed on achieving long distance teleportation due to its suitability for decoherence-free communication. Teleportation also plays a vital role in the scalability of photonic quantum computing, for which large linear optical networks will likely require an integrated architecture. Here we report the first demonstration of quantum teleportation in which all key parts - entanglement preparation, Bell-state analysis and quantum state tomography - are performed on a reconfigurable integrated photonic chip. We also show that a novel element-wise characterisation method is critical to mitigate component errors, a key technique which will become increasingly important as integrated circuits reach higher complexities necessary for quantum enhanced operation.
Low-decoherence regime plays a key role in constructing multi-particle quantum systems and has therefore been constantly pursued in order to build quantum simulators and quantum computers in a scalable fashion. Quantum error correction and quantum topological computing have been proved being able to protect quantumness but havent been experimentally realized yet. Recently, topological boundary states are found inherently stable and are capable of protecting physical fields from dissipation and disorder, which inspires the application of such a topological protection on quantum correlation. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of topological protection of two-photon quantum states on a photonic chip. By analyzing the quantum correlation of photons out from the topologically nontrivial boundary state, we obtain a high cross-correlation and a strong violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality up to 30 standard deviations. Our results, together with our integrated implementation, provide an alternative way of protecting quantumness, and may inspire many more explorations in quantum topological photonics, a crossover between topological photonics and quantum information.
Dielectric laser acceleration (DLA) represents a promising approach to building miniature particle accelerators on a chip. However, similar to conventional RF accelerators, an automatic and reconfigurable control mechanism is needed to scale DLA technology towards high energy gains and practical applications. We present a system providing control of the laser coupling to DLA using integrated optics and introduce a novel component for power distribution using a reconfigurable mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We show how such a mesh may be sequentially and efficiently tuned to optimize power distribution in the circuit and find that this strategy has favorable scaling properties with respect to size of the mesh.

Quantum feedback is a technique for measuring a qubit and applying appropriate feedback depending on the measurement results. Here, we propose a new on-chip quantum feedback method where the measurement-result information is not taken from the chip to the outside of a dilution refrigerator. This can be done by using a selective qubit-energy shift induced by measurement apparatus. We demonstrate on-chip quantum feedback and succeed in the rapid initialization of a qubit by flipping the qubit state only when we detect the ground state of the qubit. The feedback loop of our quantum feedback method closed on a chip, and so the operating time needed to control a qubit is of the order of 10 ns. This operating time is shorter than with the convectional off-chip feedback method. Our on-chip quantum feedback technique opens many possibilities such as an application to quantum information processing and providing an understanding of the foundation of thermodynamics for quantum systems.
In the age of post-Moore era, the next-generation computing model would be a hybrid architecture consisting of different physical components such as photonic chips. In 2008, it has been proposed that the solving of NAND-tree problem can be sped up by quantum walk. Such scheme is groundbreaking due to the universality of NAND gate. However, experimental demonstration has never been achieved so far, mostly due to the challenge in preparing the propagating initial state. Here we propose an alternative solution by including a structure called quantum slide, where a propagating Gaussian wave-packet can be generated deterministically along a properly-engineered chain. In this way, the optical computation can be achieved with ordinary laser light instead of single photon, and the output can be obtained by single-shot measurements instead of repeated quantum measurements. In our experimental demonstration, the optical NAND-tree is capable of solving computational problems with a total of four input bits, based on the femtosecond laser 3D direct-writing technique on a photonic chip. These results remove one main roadblock to photonic NAND-tree computation, and the construction of quantum slide may find other interesting applications in quantum information and quantum optics.
