Dielectric spectroscopy is used to check for the onset of polar order in the quasi one-dimensional quantum spin system Sul-Cu2Cl4 when passing from the spin-liquid state into the ordered spiral phase in an external magnetic field. We find clear evidence for multiferroicity in this material and treat in detail its H-T phase diagram close to the quantum-critical regime.

Two-dimensional triangular-lattice materials with spin-1/2 are perfect platforms for investigating quantum frustrated physics with spin fluctuations. Here we report the structure, magnetization, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results on cesium ytterbium diselenide, CsYbSe$_2$. There is no long-range magnetic order down to 0.4 K at zero field. The temperature dependent magnetization, $M(T)$, reveals an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. A maximum is found in $M(T)$ around emph{T}$sim$1.5 K when magnetic field $H$ is applied in the $ab$ plane, indicating the short-range interaction. The low-temperature isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ shows a one-third plateau of the estimated saturation moment, that is characteristic of a two-dimensional frustrated triangular lattice. Heat capacity shows field-induced long-range magnetic order for both $H||c$ and $H||ab$ directions. The broad peak in heat capacity and highly damped INS magnetic excitation at $T$=2 K suggests strong spin fluctuations. The dispersive in-plane INS, centered at the (1/3 1/3 0) point, and the absence of dispersion along $c$ direction suggests 120$^{circ}$ non-collinear 2D-like spin correlations. All these results indicate that the two-dimensional frustrated material CsYbSe$_2$ can be in proximity to the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid. We propose an experimental low-temperature $H$-$T$ phase diagram for CsYbSe$_2$.
We combine two aspects of magnetic frustration, multiferroicity and emergent quasi-particles in spin liquids, by studying magneto-electric monopoles. Spin ice offers to couple these emergent topological defects to external fields, and to each other, in unusual ways, making possible to lift the degeneracy underpinning the spin liquid and to potentially stabilize novel forms of charge crystals, opening the path to a magnetic crystallography. In developing the general phase diagram including nearest-neighbour coupling, Zeeman energy, electric and magnetic dipolar interactions, we uncover the emergence of a bi-layered crystal of singly-charged monopoles, whose stability, remarkably, is strengthened by an external [110] magnetic field. Our theory is able to account for the ordering process of Tb2Ti2O7 in large field for reasonably small electric energy scales.
The frustrated isotropic $J_1-J_2$ model with ferromagnetic $J_1$ and anti-ferromagnetic $J_2$ interactions in presence of an axial magnetic field shows many exotic phases, such as vector chiral and multipolar phases. The existing studies of the phase boundaries of these systems are based on the indirect evidences such as correlation functions {it etc}. In this paper, the phase boundaries of these exotic phases are calculated based on order parameters and jumps in the magnetization. In the strong magnetic field, $Z_2$ symmetry is broken, therefore, order parameter of the vector chiral phase is calculated using the broken symmetry states. Our results obtained using the modified density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, suggest that the vector chiral phase exist only in narrow range of parameter space $J_2/J_1$.
A quantum magnet, LiCuSbO4, with chains of edge-sharing S = 1/2 CuO6 octahedra is reported. While the Curie-Weiss constant is ferromagnetic, theta = 30 K, no phase transition or spin freezing occurs down to 100 mK. Specific heat indicates a distinct high field phase near the 12 T saturation field. Neutron scattering shows incommensurate spin correlations with q = 0.47pm0.01{pi}/a and places an upper limit of 70 mueV on a potential spin gap. Exact diagonalization of easy plane S = 1/2 chains with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions (J1 = - 75 K, J2 = 34 K) accounts for the T > 2 K data.
We report a $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance study in the honeycomb lattice, $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, a material that has been suggested to potentially realize a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. Our results provide direct evidence that $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ exhibits a magnetic field-induced QSL. For fields larger than $sim 10$ T a spin-gap opens up while resonance lines remain sharp, evidencing that spins are quantum disordered and locally fluctuating. The spin gap increases linearly with increasing magnetic field, reaching $sim50$ K at 15 T, and is nearly isotropic with respect to the field direction. The unusual rapid increase of the spin gap with increasing field and its isotropic nature are incompatible with conventional magnetic ordering and in particular exclude that the ground state is a fully polarized ferromagnet. The presence of such a field-induced, gapped QSL phase has indeed been predicted in the Kitaev model.
