We present observations of the nearby tidal dwarf galaxy Holmberg IX in M81 galaxy group in narrow band [SII] and H$alpha$ filters, carried out in March and November 2008 with the 2m RCC telescope at NAO Rozhen, Bulgaria. Our search for resident supernova remnants (identified as sources with enhanced [SII] emission relative to their H$alpha$ emission) in this galaxy yielded no sources of this kind, besides M&H 10-11 or HoIX X-1. Nevertheless, we found a number of objects with significant H$alpha$ emission that probably represent uncatalogued HII regions.
We present observations of the portion of the nearby spiral galaxy IC342 using narrow band [SII] and H$alpha$ filters. These observations were carried out in November 2011 with the 2m RCC telescope at Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory in Bulgaria. In this paper we report coordinates, diameters, H$alpha$ and [SII] fluxes for 203 HII regions detected in two fields of view in IC342 galaxy. The number of detected HII regions is 5 times higher than previously known in these two parts of the galaxy.
We present the detection of 16 optical supernova remnant (SNR) candidates in the nearby spiral galaxy IC342. The candidates were detected by applying [SII]/H$alpha$ ratio criterion on observations made with the 2 m RCC telescope at Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory in Bulgaria. In this paper, we report the coordinates, diameters, H$alpha$ and [SII] fluxes for 16 SNRs detected in two fields of view in the IC342 galaxy. Also, we estimate that the contamination of total H$alpha$ flux from SNRs in the observed portion of IC342 is 1.4%. This would represent the fractional error when the star formation rate (SFR) for this galaxy is derived from the total galaxys H$alpha$ emission.
We present a novel method to estimate accurate redshifts of star-forming galaxies by measuring the flux ratio of the same emission line observed through two adjacent narrow-band filters. We apply this method to our NB912 and new NB921 data taken with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope of a galaxy cluster, XMMXCS J2215.9-1738, at z=1.46 and its surrounding structures. We obtain redshifts for 170 [OII] emission line galaxies at z~1.46, among which 41 galaxies are spectroscopically confirmed with MOIRCS and FMOS on the Subaru mainly, showing an accuracy of $sigma$((z-z_spec})/(1+z_spec))=0.002. This allows us to reveal filamentary structures that penetrate towards the centre of the galaxy cluster and intersect with other structures, consistent with the picture of hierarchical cluster formation. We also find that the projected celestial distribution does not precisely trace the real distribution of galaxies, indicating the importance of the three dimensional view of structures to properly identify and quantify galaxy environments. We investigate the environmental dependence of galaxy properties with local density, confirming that the median colour of galaxies becomes redder in higher density region while the star-formation rate of star-forming galaxies does not depend strongly on local environment in this structure. This implies that the star-forming activity in galaxies is truncated on a relatively short time scale in the cluster centre.
We present the first sub-arcsecond radio observations of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 3077 obtained with the MERLIN interferometer. We have detected two resolved sources which are coincident with the positions of two discrete X-ray sources detected by Chandra. One of the radio sources is associated with a supernova remnant and the observed radio flux is consistent with having a non-thermal origin. The age of the SNRs of about 760 years is between the average age of the SNRs detected in M82 and those detected in the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud. We use this detection to calculate a star formation rate (SFR) of 0.28 M_sun year-1 which is similar to the SFR calculated by using far infrared and millimeter observations but larger than the SFR given by optical recombination lines corrected for extinction. The other compact radio source detected by MERLIN which is coincident with the position of an X-ray binary, has the properties of an HII region with a flux density of about 747 microJy which corresponds to an ionizing flux of 6.8x10^50 s-1. A young massive stellar cluster with a mass of about 2x10^5 M_sun, detected by the Hubble Space Telescope could be the responsible for the production of the ionizing flux.
