Measurements in very low disorder two-dimensional electrons confined to relatively wide GaAs quantum well samples with tunable density reveal reentrant $ u=1$ integer quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level near filling factors $ u=4/5$ and 6/5. These states are not seen at low densities and become more prominent with increasing density and in wider wells. Our data suggest a close competition between different types of Wigner crystal states near these fillings. We also observe an intriguing disappearance and reemergence of the $ u=4/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect with increasing density.

We present measurements of the real diagonal microwave conductivity of the reentrant insulating quantum Hall phases in the first excited Landau level at temperatures below 50 mK. A resonance is detected around filling factor $ u=2.58$ and weaker frequency dependence is seen at $ u=2.42$ and 2.28. These measurements are consistent with the formation of a bubble phase crystal centered around these $ u$ at very low temperatures.

We report on detailed experimental studies of a high-quality heterojunction insulated-gate field-effect transistor (HIGFET) to probe the particle-hole symmetry (PHS) of the FQHE states about half-filling in the lowest Landau level. The HIGFET was specially designed to vary the density of a two-dimensional electronic system under constant magnetic fields. We find in our constant magnetic field, variable density measurements that the sequence of FQHE states at filling factors nu = 1/3, 2/5, 3/7 ... and its particle-hole conjugate states at filling factors 1 - nu = 2/3, 3/5, 4/7 ... have a very similar energy gap. Moreover, a reflection symmetry can be established in the magnetoconductivities between the nu and 1 - nu states about half-filling. Our results demonstrate that the FQHE states in the lowest Landau level are manifestly particle-hole symmetric.
Reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states are believed to be correlated electron solid phases, though their microscopic description remains unclear. As bias current increases, longitudinal and Hall resistivities measured for these states exhibit multiple sharp breakdown transitions, a signature unique to RIQH states. We present spatially-resolved measurements of RIQH breakdown that indicate these breakdown signatures can be ascribed to a phase boundary between broken-down and unbroken regions, spreading chirally from source and drain contacts as a function of bias current and passing voltage probes one by one. The chiral sense of the spreading is not set by the chirality of the edge state itself, instead depending on electron- or hole-like character of the RIQH state.
Many intriguing phenomena occur for electrons under strong magnetic fields. Recently, it was proposed that an appropriate strain texture in graphene can induce a synthetic gauge field, in which the electrons behave like in a real magnetic field. This opened the door to control quantum transport by mechanical means and to explore unprecedented physics in high-field regime. Such studies have been achieved in molecular and photonic lattices. Here we report the first experimental realization of giant uniform pseudomagnetic field in acoustics by introducing a simple uniaxial deformation to acoustic graphene. Benefited from the controllability of our macroscopic platform, we observe the acoustic Landau levels in frequency-resolved spectroscopy and their spatial localization in pressure-field distributions. We further visualize the quantum-Hall-like edge states (connected to the zeroth Landau level), which have been elusive before owing to the challenge in creating large-area uniform pseudomagnetic fields. These results, highly consistent with our full-wave simulations, establish a complete framework for artificial structures under constant pseudomagnetic fields. Our findings, conceptually novel in acoustics, may offer new opportunities to manipulate sound.
Specific heat has had an important role in the study of superfluidity and superconductivity, and could provide important information about the fractional quantum Hall effect as well. However, traditional measurements of the specific heat of a two-dimensional electron gas are difficult due to the large background contribution of the phonon bath, even at very low temperatures. Here, we report measurements of the specific heat per electron in the second Landau level by measuring the thermalization time between the electrons and phonons. We observe activated behaviour of the specific heat of the 5/2 and 7/3 fractional quantum Hall states, and extract the entropy by integrating over temperature. Our results are in excellent agreement with previous measurements of the entropy via longitudinal thermopower. Extending the technique to lower temperatures could lead to detection of the non-Abelian entropy predicted for bulk quasiparticles at 5/2 filling
