We apply the monodromy method for the calculation of the functional determinant of a special second order differential operator $F=-d^2/dtau^2+{ddot g}/g$, $ddot g= d^2g/dtau^2$, subject to periodic boundary conditions with a periodic zero mode $g=g(tau)$. This operator arises in applications of the early Universe theory and, in particular, determines the one-loop statistical sum for the microcanonical ensemble in cosmology generated by a conformal field theory (CFT). This ensemble realizes the concept of cosmological initial conditions by generalizing the notion of the no-boundary wavefunction of the Universe to the level of a special quasi-thermal state which is dominated by instantons with an oscillating scale factor of their Euclidean Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. These oscillations result in the multi-node nature of the zero mode $g(tau)$ of $F$, which is gauged out from its reduced functional determinant by the method of the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure. The calculation is done for a general case of multiple nodes (roots) within the period range of the Euclidean time $tau$, thus generalizing the previously known result for the single-node case of one oscillation of the cosmological scale factor. The functional determinant of $F$ expresses in terms of the monodromy of its basis function, which is obtained in quadratures as a sum of contributions of time segments connecting neighboring pairs of the zero mode roots within the period range.

We present a detailed derivation of the recently suggested new type of hill-top inflation [arXiv:1509.07270] originating from the microcanonical density matrix initial conditions in cosmology driven by conformal field theory (CFT). The cosmological instantons of topology $S^1times S^3$, which set up these initial conditions, have the shape of a garland with multiple periodic oscillations of the scale factor of the spatial $S^3$-section. They describe underbarrier oscillations of the inflaton and scale factor in the vicinity of the inflaton potential maximum, which gives a sufficient amount of inflation required by the known CMB data. We build the approximation of two coupled harmonic oscillators for these garland instantons and show that they can generate inflation consistent with the parameters of the CMB primordial power spectrum in the non-minimal Higgs inflation model and in $R^2$ gravity. In particular, the instanton solutions provide smallness of inflationary slow-roll parameters $epsilon$ and $eta<0$ and their relation $epsilonsimeta^2$ characteristic of these two models. We present the mechanism of formation of hill-like inflaton potentials, which is based on logarithmic loop corrections to the asymptotically shift-invariant tree level potentials of these models in the Einstein frame. We also discuss the role of $R^2$-gravity as an indispensable finite renormalization tool in the CFT driven cosmology, which guarantees the non-dynamical (ghost free) nature of its scale factor and special properties of its cosmological garland type instantons. Finally, as a solution to the problem of hierarchy between the Planckian scale and the inflation scale we discuss the concept of a hidden sector of conformal higher spin fields.
It has recently been appreciated that the conifold modulus plays an important role in string-phenomenological set-ups involving warped throats, both by imposing constraints on model building and for obtaining a 10-dimensional picture of SUSY-breaking. In this note, we point out that the stability of the conifold modulus furthermore prevents large super- Planckian axion monodromy field ranges caused by brane-flux decay processes down warped throats. Our findings imply a significant challenge for concrete string theory embeddings of the inflationary flux-unwinding scenario.
A large class of two dimensional quantum gravity theories of Jackiw-Teitelboim form have a description in terms of random matrix models. Such models, treated fully non-perturbatively, can give an explicit and tractable description of the underlying ``microstate degrees of freedom. They play a prominent role in regimes where the smooth geometrical picture of the physics is inadequate. This is shown using a natural tool for extracting the detailed microstate physics, a Fredholm determinant ${rm det}(mathbf{1}{-}mathbf{ K})$. Its associated kernel $K(E,E^prime)$ can be defined explicitly for a wide variety of JT gravity theories. To illustrate the methods, the statistics of the first several energy levels of a non-perturbative definition of JT gravity are constructed explicitly using numerical methods, and the full quenched free energy $F_Q(T)$ of the system is computed for the first time. These results are also of relevance to quantum properties of black holes in higher dimensions.

Recently the partial wave cutoff method was developed as a new calculational scheme for a functional determinant of quantum field theory in radial backgrounds. For the contribution given by an infinite sum of large partial waves, we derive explicitly radial WKB series in the angular momentum cutoff for $d=2,3,4$ and 5 ($d$ is the spacetime dimension), which has uniform validity irrespectively of any specific values assumed for other parameters. Utilizing this series, precision evaluation of the renormalized functional determinant is possible with a relatively small number of low partial wave contributions determined separately. We illustrate the power of this scheme in numerically exact evaluation of the prefactor (expressed as a functional determinant) in the case of the false vacuum decay of 4D scalar field theory.
We study the time evolution of early universe which is developed by a cosmological constant $Lambda_4$ and supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) fields in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time. The renormalized vacuum expectation value of energy-momentum tensor of the SYM theory is obtained in a holographic way. It includes a radiation of the SYM field, parametrized as $C$. The evolution is controlled by this radiation $C$ and the cosmological constant $Lambda_4$. For positive $Lambda_4$, an inflationary solution is obtained at late time. When $C$ is added, the quantum mechanical situation at early time is fairly changed. Here we perform the early time analysis in terms of two different approaches, (i) the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and (ii) Lorentzian path-integral with the Picard-Lefschetz method by introducing an effective action. The results of two methods are compared.
