To investigate the physics of mass accretion onto weakly-magnetized neutron stars, 95 archival RXTE datasets of an atoll source 4U 1608-522, acquired over 1996-2004 in so-called upper-banana state, were analyzed. The object meantime exhibited 3-30 keV luminosity in the range of <~ 10^35 - 4 x 10^37 erg s^-1, assuming a distance of 3.6 kpc. The 3-30 keV PCA spectra, produced one from each dataset, were represented successfully with a combination of a soft and a hard component, of which the presence was revealed in a model-independent manner by studying spectral variations among the observations. The soft component is expressed by so-called multi-color disk model with a temperature of ~1.8 keV, and is attributed to the emission from an optically-thick standard accretion disk. The hard component is a blackbody emission with a temperature of ~2.7 keV, thought to be emitted from the neutron-star surface. As the total luminosity increases, a continuous decrease was observed in the ratio of the blackbody luminosity to that of the disk component. This property suggests that the matter flowing through the accretion disk gradually becomes difficult to reach the neutron-star surface, presumably forming outflows driven by the increased radiation pressure. On time scales of hours to days, the overall source variability was found to be controlled by two independent variables; the mass accretion rate, and the innermost disk radius which changes both physically and artificially.

We analyse ~ 360 ks of archival data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of the 21 hr orbital period dipping low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1624-49. We find that outside the dips the tracks in the colour-colour and hardness-intensity diagrams (CDs and HIDs) are reminiscent of those of atoll sources in the middle and upper parts of the banana branch. The tracks show secular shifts up to ~ 10%. We study the power spectrum of 4U 1624-49 as a function of the position in the CD. This is the first time power spectra of this source are presented. No quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found. The power spectra are dominated by very low frequency noise (VLFN), characteristic for atoll sources in the banana state, and band limited noise (BLN) which is not reliably detected but may, uncharacteristically, strengthen and increase in frequency with spectral hardness. The VLFN fits to a power law, which becomes steeper when the source moves to the harder part of the CD. We conclude that 4U 1624-49 is an atoll source which in our observations is in the upper banana branch. Combining this with the high (0.5-0.7 L_Edd) luminosity, the long-term flux stability of the source as seen with the RXTE All-Sky Monitor (ASM), and with the fact that it is an X-ray dip source, we conclude that 4U 1624-49 is most likely a GX atoll source such as GX 3+1 and GX 9+9, but seen edge on.
With {it RXTE} data, we analyzed the cross-correlation function between the soft and hard X-rays of the transient atoll source 4U 1608-52. We found anti-correlations in three outbursts occurred in 1998, 2002 and 2010, and significant time lags of several hundreds of seconds in the latter two outbursts. Our results show no correlation between the soft and hard X-rays in the island state, and a dominated positive correlation in the lower banana state. Anti-correlations are presented at the upper banana state for the outburst of 2010 and at the lower left banana states for the other two outbursts. So far for atoll sources the cross-correlation has been studied statistically only for 4U 1735-44, where anti-correlations showed up in the upper banana state. Here our investigation upon 4U 1608-52 provides a similar result in its 2010 outburst. In addition, we notice that the luminosities in the upper banana of 1998 and 2002 outbursts are about 1.5 times that of 2010 outburst whose luminosity in the upper banana is close to that of 4U 1735-44. The results suggest that the states in color-color diagram of a source could be correlated with the luminosity of the source. A further spectral analysis shows that, during the 2010 outburst, although an anti-correlation presents at the highest fluxes, the contemporary spectrum is not the softest one along the outburst evolution. This suggests that the observed anti-correlation may be relevant to the transition between the hard and soft states, which is consistent with the previous results on 4U 1735-44 and several black hole X-ray binaries that anti-correlations are observed during the transition states.

We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the high-mass binary 4U~1700-37 during its hard-soft state evolution. We use the BeppoSAX, Suzaku and RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer), Suzaku and BeppoSAX observations for this investigation. We argue that the X-ray broad-band spectra during all spectral states can be adequately reproduced by a model, consisting of a low-temperature Blackbody component, two Comptonized components both due to the presence of a Compton cloud (CC) that up-scatters seed photons of $T_{s1}$~< 1.4 keV, and $T_{s2}<$1 keV, and an iron-line component. We find using this model that the photon power-law index is almost constant, $Gamma_{1}sim 2$ for all spectral states. However, $Gamma_{2}$ shows a behavior depending on the spectral state. Namely, $Gamma_{2}$ is quasi-constant at the level of $Gamma_{2}sim 2$ while the CC plasma temperature $kT^{(2)}_e$ is less than 40 keV; on the other hand, $Gamma_{2}$ is in the range of $1.3<Gamma_{2}<2$, when $kT^{(2)}_e$ is greater than 40 keV. We explain this quasi-stability of $Gamma$ during most of hard-soft transitions of 4U~1700-37 in a framework of the model in which the resulting spectrum is described by two Comptonized components. We find that these Comptonized spectral components of the HMXB 4U~1700-37 are similar to those previously found in NS sources. This index dependence versus both mass accretion rate and $kT_e$ revealed in 4U~1700-37 is a universal observational evidence for the presence of a NS in 4U 1700-37.
We report on the first simultaneous $NICER$ and $NuSTAR$ observations of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1735$-$44, obtained in 2018 August. The source was at a luminosity of $sim1.8~(D/5.6 mathrm{kpc})^{2}times10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ in the $0.4-30$ keV band. We account for the continuum emission with two different continuum descriptions that have been used to model the source previously. Despite the choice in continuum model, the combined passband reveals a broad Fe K line indicative of reflection in the spectrum. In order to account for the reflection spectrum we utilize a modified version of the reflection model RELXILL that is tailored for thermal emission from accreting NSs. Alternatively, we also use the reflection convolution model of RFXCONV to model the reflected emission that would arise from a Comptonized thermal component for comparison. We determine that the innermost region of the accretion disk extends close to the innermost stable circular orbit ($R_{mathrm{ISCO}}$) at the 90% confidence level regardless of reflection model. Moreover, the current flux calibration of $NICER$ is within 5% of the $NuSTAR$/FPMA(B).
We have found and analysed 16 multi-peaked type-I bursts from the neutron-star low mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). One of the bursts is a rare quadruple-peaked burst which was not previously reported. All 16 bursts show a multi-peaked structure not only in the X-ray light curves but also in the bolometric light curves. Most of the multi-peaked bursts appear in observations during the transition from the hard to the soft state in the colour-colour diagram. We find an anti-correlation between the second peak flux and the separation time between two peaks. We also find that in the double-peaked bursts the peak-flux ratio and the temperature of the thermal component in the pre-burst spectra are correlated. This indicates that the double-peaked structure in the light curve of the bursts may be affected by enhanced accretion rate in the disc, or increased temperature of the neutron star.
